Can anybody read into the chat room thing for me? Is it saying up to 6 people video chatting at once? or is it just text chat? I'm not really sure.

Some sad news, no reading of media from network storage devices confirmed :(

But you can read stuff from every other connected storage devices (be that picture, music and indeed video content). Bring your iPods. Bring your HDD's..etc. :)

Hey that part about "cinema conversion" is that upscaling?

No ... it is controlling the detection of video and film-based material (30fps or 24fps) - and is only applicable to non-progressive players.

The automatic mode is self-explanatory. It will attempt to detect what the DVD is, and deinterlace it based on that.

The video mode is an override that forces it to stay in video mode. This is useful because certain video-based material has all sorts of weird cadences that confuse automatic detection (Anime being the biggest culprit).

While weird cadence material may still have some motion artifacts ... it will look a hell of a lot better than if the PS3 thinks its detecting 2:3 pulldown every little while.

I haven't read through the manual yet ... but I would assume there is one location where you specify resolution, and everything gets scaled to it (DVD, BluRay, and all games).

I really want to know. I'm looking for confirmation of upscaling dvd's in the test somewhere. Still don't know if its in, despite PR people.
Edit: damn you beat me, THanks

There are some really sweet system settings for the PS3.

I like that they have separate Format and Restore functionality. Format keeps all system settings and user profile stuff (friends lists, web bookmarks, dictionary, etc.) ... and deletes everything else ... while restore resets everything.

Plus, you can even set what OS starts at bootup ... XMB, Linux, or whatever else comes along.

SWEET!!!!!

I'm sorry, but the PS3 has all this awesome functionality, it has a friggin' OS, and you guys are excited that it reads media from other devices? I thought that would be the most obvious thing. Why give it USB ports otherwise?

Lol ... I just answered that in the post above yours.

I'm also disappointed with the AVC support. I'm glad it's there, but Blu-ray can use the High profile - which means the PS3 can decode it fine - but users are limited to AVC files encoded with the Main profile.

Firmware update, please.

I don't know, tell that to Microsoft.

Has anyone seen anything about turning the system on with a game inside, and if you hold the PS button down it'll boot directly to the XMB? I hope they keep that feature from the test units.

Don't know why they would scrap it...

Anyways, this stuff is great, especially the news about the USB drive.

I disagree. With a NAS drive i could keep it in one place, with a USB drive i'll have to keep moving it back and forth between my PC and PS3.
Eh I have an one-touch backup external storage that I carry between two PCs in my house, I don't think it is that bad. The thing is I carry alot of crap between my house, work, and my friends so this is a bonus for me.

Either way having "unlimited" (i.e. you can always buy more) storage is a good thing any way you look at it. Just hope that whatever the PS3 downloads from the Sony network can also be copied over to that drive. (I doubt it though)

The Xbox 360 reads MP3, JPG, and WMV from any USB storage devices. It's not much, but...well, that's what I was saying. It's just strange that people latched onto that fact, when I (and I don't know crap about the PS3) assumed it could do that months ago.

So what will you name your system?
Seeing their specifications
Register a name that will be publicly displayed in PLAYSTATION®Network. The online ID can be 3 to 16 characters in length and can include alphabet letters and numbers. The ID is used to distinguish users on PLAYSTATION®Network. After it has been created, it cannot be changed.
I guess it will be BadBoy.
no special characters ftl :/

Well you said you ASSUME you set it and it upscales. I know it wont upscale games, but the jury is still out on movies

Okay, so:
If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system.
...Sucks.

There aren't that many monitors out there with HDCP on their DVI ports, so most people will likely not be able to use the HDMI out to their LCD monitor.

I don't have a PSP or anything so i don't know if this would work, but couldn't you just delete it and recreate another one?
yeah but you would probably loose all your settings, friends list, blocked list, purchase history, etc.

Not that big of a deal I guess, but I'd rather keep all my info for less stress. Guess I gotta think up a good backup name just incase its taken lol.

(PLAYSTATION®Store) is an online shop within PLAYSTATION®Network where you can buy products such as expansion data, items for games or video content.

Is this just video game trailers or we talking about TV shows/movies?

The following types of files can be played under (Music).

Memory Stick Audio Format(ATRAC)
MP3(MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3)
MP4(MPEG-4 AAC)
WAVE(Linear PCM)

Better or worse than PSP music playback?

Will definitely happen next year but not from day one. I guess Game documentaries and such. I have a feeling a Resistance behind the scenes will pop up there because there was some talk about some real life flamethrower videos (Insomniac testing it) that wouldn't be included on the disc but elsewhere.

In the beginning it will probably only be game trailers and movie trailers, but later Phil said they would expand on tv/movies/music later after launch.

Here's my simplest idea for getting network support - but I'm not sure it will work.

You know how you can buy ethernet routers that come with a USB port for a mass storage device?

What would happen if you connected a USB switch to it ...

... and then connected your HDD's to the USB switch ...

... AND also your PS3?

Would the that work?

It won't allow you to access content directly from another PC, but it allows you to set up a NAS for your entire network (assuming this works).

Mmm, there's nothing I love better than a big thick manual. I'm feeling all tingly~ <3

It'll be years before I get a PS3... I needn't get myself too excited :(

Right now, worse. PSP currently supports AAC and WMA in addition to those, but those came through firmware updates. I think the PSP started with MP3, ATRAC and maybe WAV support.

Damn, it does not seem as if there is a way to output at 1080p/24. :(

I was hoping I would be able to do that in order to enjoy BD movies at the proper framerates.

That's what I thought, not having AAC seems very stupid. The video codecs are a little better at least.

I'm assuming this online guide will probably have hardwired link in the PS3 browser.

When you look at current state of PSP firmware, there's a few other things that the PS3 won't mimic either, at launch. Like RSS support.

About the "streaming music" question...I think it was Onix who posted it. Anyway, if we can't stream music from the XMB, you'll definitely be able to do on the Linux side. If you want confirmation, here's a thread from the YDL general mailing list:

Subject: [ydl-gen] PS3 YDL Drive/Network Access
Date: Thu, 9 Nov 2006 10:51:24 -0600 (11:51 EST)

Two questions:

1) Will YDL 5.0 be able to read from the drive so that we could, for example, transfer files via CD/DVD?

2) I know that the PS3 GameOS does not allow for transfers from a home computer to the the HDD over the network, but when Linux is booted, will it be able to access network resources to transfer files and have files transferred to it?

Chris

Yes.

The gig-e port is supported and live, both at install (for network installs)
and post-install.

Sincerely,
kai

So, there you go. Now, there's tons of way you could stream music on the Linux side. I suppose we can get to that when the time comes...

Er...so MP4 AAC and AAC are different? (assumed they were the same, but generally don't need to use that format...)

Do I have cheatcodes or something?

The following types of files can be played under (Music).

MP3(MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3)
MP4(MPEG-4 AAC)
WAVE(Linear PCM)
