GAF Plays Wing Commander

It's video game storytelling. It isn't going to be that good!
See, I don't buy that excuse. The First games story was nice, neat and simple. The way they developed the story in SM1/SM2 was, IMO, far better than this cliche ridden story. I don't think we need to sacrifice good storytelling just because of this medium.

(Yay! new page. That last one was getting pretty large due to all the pics lol)

It's as if Chris Roberts wanted to be directing movies.
Fortunately or Unfortunately (however you wish to view it), He had little input in this game so you can't really blame him for it's faults. Though he did give the director of this game advice on where he wanted the story to go so he may be ultimately at fault.

Still, the worst part of the story is how it ends. It's like a bad action flick.

You can really see it coming with how bad they telegraph it. It's like that guys LP I showed you. He mentions all the faults of WC2/SO1/SO2 and I tend to agree. I still think WC2 is better than the FMV games but only marginally.

Tesla System. Enigma Sector.

Two Weeks After Spirit's Funeral.

Pre-Mission: Repair Deck. I talk with Sparks about Angel. She says she doesn't care as long as I'm not using Angel to get ahead in my career. I tell her I would never do that. I don't have a future in the Navy, I mention. Sparks also mentions that Confed Marines have retaken Niffleheim.

During Mission: A wing of Epee's are going to take out a Kilrathi listening post in the area. At first, Angel assigns me and Hollywood to command the wing but then changes her mind and has me with Stingray in morning patrol. I ask to talk to her privately after the briefing. I ask her why she moved me from listening post duty. Angel says she's already heard grumblings about our relationship and doesn't want to be seen to show favoritism. We're back in Rapiers for this.

Three Jalkehi at the asteroids at Nav 1. I get one, Stingray gets one, and the last one explodes onto an asteroid. A wing of Grikath's are attacking the Bonnie Heather at Nav 2. Stingray get's two and I don't get any leaving me with a paltry 1 kill this mission. My Ion drive also takes damage.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: I debrief Angel in her office (not like that). I offer drinks at O-Deck with her & Paladin but she declines.

Kills: 689

Tesla System. Enigma Sector.

Pre-Mission: Poker in the Barracks. Downtown, Paladin, Hobbes, and Myself. Paladin asks me whats wrong and I tell him how some people are spreading rumors about my relationship with Angel. He tells me not to worry. Downtown wins the hand.

He'll scratch up the table!

During Mission: I'm ordered to launch immediately. Seems two Dorkathi transports have wandered from their convoy. We need to destroy them as each one could possibly hold up to one thousand troops.

Four Sartha en route to the transports. I get my forward & aft armor shot off (mostly by Stingray) but I get two and Stingray gets the others. Four Jalkehi guards a Dorkathi. My power plant takes light damage. Stingray leaves the battle early and doesn't get another kill. Another Dorkathi jumps in as I'm mopping up the fighters. Once the fighters are gone, I destroy both Dorkathi.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: 8 kills is at least better than the one I got last mission.

Sorties: 75
Kills: 697

Tesla System. Enigma Sector.

Pre-Mission: O-Deck. Stingray seems to be softening to Hobbes...As am I.

During Mission: Angel has me and Stingray escort Paladin to his Jump Point out.

Four Drakhri en route to Nav Point. I ice two (though Bonnie Heather's flak cannons damage my front armor a little), Bonnie Heather gets one, and Stingray gets one. As Paladin is getting ready to jump, Concordia hails me and tells me that two Fralthra are in the area. I have to seek them out once Paladin jumps. The Pair of Fralthra are escorted by Four Jalkehi, one of which is Khasra Redclaw. Stingray has to run for it early in the fight. I nail Khasra but take damage to my Ion Drive. I ice the other three.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: Upon Landing, I relay to Major Edmonds (the Concordia's Comm officer) where the two Fralthra are. She says we'll send out some Broadswords to take care of them.

Kills: 703

Tesla System. Enigma Sector.

Pre-Mission: O-Deck. Jazz at piano. Hobbes, Downtown, myself, and the aforementioned Jazz discuss the Cap ships that are in the area.

During Mission: Bravo Wing. Briefing starts out with normal patrol assignments before Angel is contacted from the Bridge. All hands are ordered to red alert. A strike force led by a Ralatha is headed our way. We have to escort Concordia's Destroyer escort "William Tell" to the Ralatha so it can destroy the cat cap ship. A wing of Grikath's are attacking us at launch. I get one. Stingray manages one and Flak from both our cap ships get the rest. We head out to the strike force. A wing of Jalkehi escort the Ralatha. I get two but one of my Particle guns is shot off and my Comp & Accel. Absorbers get hit. Stingray manages two but crashes into the last one and ejects. The William Tell takes out the Ralatha.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: Besides the kills, nothing else.

Thanks. Feel free to join in anytime.

Also, maybe I should have been clearer when I started the thread, but anyone can join in with any WC game they like. You don't have to do it from the beginning if you don't want to. I just like to go in order is all.

Enigma System. Enigma Sector.

Pre-Mission: O-Deck. I find out that Downtown died while I was in space. Ten Drakhri ambushed him. Hobbes is upset. Jazz says he felt the same way when his brother died on Goddard Colony. Two hours later in Barracks. Hobbes says he feels like he lost a son. I offer him what's left of that bottle of Sukar 'Mya that Paladin brought on board.

During Mission: Alpha Wing in Broadswords with Angel. Seems the Kilrathi are nipping at our heels.

Well that's just great

Let's not do that then

Unfortunately, we have no choice. We'll be flying to the Jump point via the Unknown area. Once we get to Jump Point, we have to clear the area so Concordia can jump in. When all is clear, the Concordia can jump in and then power down engines so we can make repairs.

Three Drakhri at Unknown Nav. I waste them all. Jump point is clear so we jump...right into a Kamekh and her three Sartha escorts. I take out the fighters and Angel nails the corvette.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: With the enemies gone, we radio Concordia that it's clear for her jump.

You know what this means. Launching in astteroids

Pre-Mission: O-Deck. Stingray, Hobbes, and Jazz are here. They wonder why we're here.

8khLb.png

Really? The asteroids outside the window didn't tip you off?

Jazz says he heard that guards have been posted around comm room with orders to shoot to kill if anyone tries to get in that doesn't have permission from Admiral Tolwyn.

During Mission: Very short briefing in Angels office. We have to take out the Korah Pakh listening station in the area. We're going through the asteroids in a roundabout way as to not alert the enemy to Concordia's actual location in the system.

Launch into asteroids. Nav 1 is more asteroids. Nav 2 is empty. The Outpost is guarded by three Drakhai Drakhri (say that 3x fast). It takes a bit of work but I ice all three. Four Jalkehi of the ordinary kind then appear. I take them out. During this, Angel gets shot down but ejects. While I'm doing my bombing run of the station, my forward and aft armor take some minor damage. I destroy the station then pick up Angel so the S&R boys don't have to.

Post Mission Write-Up: I land and back in her office we discuss how the mission went. I get 8 kills total and none for Angel.

What's great is that ytmnd is a 100% accurate recreation of fighting against them. I swear that shit loops in-game.

Enigma System. Enigma Sector.

Pre-Mission: Barracks. Looks like another round of cards tonight. Doomsday, Stingray, Hobbes, and myself. We start discussing what we might do if the war ends in our lifetime. Hobbes says we all are lucky since we have homes to go back to. Since he defected, he left everyone he knew. I fold my hand as does Stingray. Doomsday wins the pot with aces & tens. Doomsday (ever the optimist) says we have nothing to worry about since we'll all be dead anyway.

During Mission: A strike force is headed our way. Good news is that we can use this force to pinpoint the Kilrathi sector command K'Tithrak Mang. So me and Angel have broadswords that have been specially equipped with tracking equipment.

Again with Launching in asteroids. Once those are done, we head to the Asteroid nav point. Through those and straight on to the Ralatha. It's guarded by Five Jalkehi which i easily kill. We let the Ralatha jump and then jump after it. I get the kill shot on it once we've jumped though my port armor get's knocked down to half.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: We now have jump data on K'tithrak Mang. Twenty minutes later, we land at Concordia once it jumps in system.

Don't get him started Stingray!

We all hope to take out the base in the system and find that damn traitor soon.

During Mission: Jazz & I are in Sabre's. There's a Ralatha heading this way.

We head straight for the destroyer. It's got four Drakhai Jalkehi with it. It takes a while and my forward armor is shot off but I manage to nail all the fighters. Jazz has to run for it. I take out the Ralari too. On the way back home, three Grikath's attack Concordia. I ice one but take some aft armor damage. The others are destroyed by Concordia.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: I tell Sparks about the mission on Repair Deck. She hopes that cats don't know we're here until it's too late.

I said it before and I'll say it again. SABRE SUCKS!!! Gun placement makes it damn near impossible to hit things. Armor is too weak for something that's supposed to be a heavy fighter. Took me 2 damn hours just to finish this mission. God, why couldn't Raptor still be around in WC2

Wasn't going to but what the hell. Since there's only 3 more missions left, lets try and finish them off tonight. I'll give my impressions of WC2 on the final mission.

K'Tithrak Mang System. Enigma Sector.

Pre-Mission: O-Deck. Jazz makes a smart ass remark about me and Angel. I tell him to stow it. He thinks this system is going to cost us dearly.

During Mission: Four point patrol with Jazz. He balks at having to to it but Angel says he can either fly the mission or scrub the flight deck.

Asteroids at Nav 1.

nUz7n.png

Not these guys again

Five of those stealth fighters at Nav 2. This time Jazz is with us so maybe I'll be taken seriously this time. I waste them all without taking a single hit. More asteroids at Nav 3. Five more stealths at Nav 4 but this time they're flown by Drakhai. Jazz get's two and the rest run.

I didn't have a PC that had a chance in hell of playing Wing Commander back in the day, but I did love reading about it in one of those gaming magazines that had long-form ... not really reviews I guess, but long, in-depth tales of the writer's adventures in the games. Their Wing Commander "story" was epic and gripping. I can't remember what magazine that was... Every write up on a game was like 6-10 pages long and was beautifully written.

I wish I would have played WC when I eventually did get a decent PC, I feel like I missed out. I *did* play Privateer a bit, but found the space combat so horrible that it kinda colored my view of other WC games, and I never ended up playing them. :/

Angel manages to knock the gun out of Jazz's hand and he makes a run for it. Major Edmond radio's me about what happened. That bastard will pay for this!

Asteroids at Nav point. I meet up with that traitor Jazz at the Jump Point. I order him to surrender but he refuses. So I have to take him on pilot against pilot. Good. He fires off some missiles that damage my aft armor a little but I take him down*. Just as I've got him in my gun sights, Angel swoops in and tractors him into her ship.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: I land and talk to Sparks. Seems security found the flight recorder that proves stealth fighters destroyed Tiger's Claw. After ten long years, my name has been exonerated.

Here we go, final mission of WC2. My thoughts at the end.

K'Tithrak Mang System. Enigma Sector.

Pre-Mission: O-Deck.

IyY0K.png

Nice security on this ship. Does Concordia even have a Brig?

QrXb3.png

Snazzy

Jazz says we betrayed him when we let his brother die. We didn't make it in time due to Tiger's Claw being detoured to attack an enemy transport (which did happen). He swore he'd kill everyone on TC. I tell him I'd like to see him dead but the courts will court-martial him and I wish I could be there to pull the trigger.

During Mission: Angel briefs everyone about the attack on K'Tithrak Mang. She will be leading the strike force. I'm to fly with Nightshade on Patrol. I request to join the strike force. She tells me that the Admiral doesn't want me to be there. Five minutes later on Flight Deck. I tell Sparks to refit my ship with torpedoes and to give me Angels flight disk with the mission specs. She asks if this is wise. I tell her that Tolwyn wants me off this ship so bad that now I'm going to give him a reason. I also ask her not to mention this to Nightshade.

My ship is outfitted with six torpedoes and two IR missiles. In between K'tithrak Mang and myself is an asteroid field. Three stealth fighters now designated Strakha are in the asteroids. I take them all out but a stray asteroid knocks off my forward armor. Concordia contacts me once I'm out of the asteroids. I'm ordered to return to base but I refuse. Major Edmond's wishes me luck just in case. Looks like Prince Thrakkath himself wants to kill me when I arrive at the station. He's flying his special fighter the Bloodfang. It's got four Particle cannons in front but I was him no sweat. The real trouble is the four Drakhai flying Sartha after he's down. I lose a Particle cannon, all but my port armor, and my ejector, intercom, & power plant get hit. I ice all for before turning my attention to K'tithrak Mang. It only takes two torps to destroy her and finally avenge Tiger's Claw after ten long years.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: I land to a full flight deck. Angel is there and I kiss her right in front of everyone (ugh bad writing game). Tolwyn is livid with me listing all the charges he has against me...but then promotes me to Colonel!

So...WC2. Can't say I really enjoyed it too much. Sure it's better than the FMV games but not by much. I liked it as a kid but as an adult, all it's flaws jump out at me. It's here where the cracks begin to form in the WC saga. The Hackneyed writing. I don't like that they destroyed Tiger's Claw. I don't like that they made Jazz a traitor or that they killed Spirit. Not to mention all the absurd things like openly having a relationship with a superior officer. Plus, they kind of make your main Character a dick. And the lazy way they implemented all the new things in this game. Particle cannons are supposed to be the hot new gun but I seem to be able to kill guys faster with the ferret and broadsword who only have mass drivers in front. It's telling when 3 out of 5 of the new fighters suck. They didn't upgrade wingman AI to take into account of Turrets. How many times did Hobbes get shot down due to just letting enemy turrets shoot at him? Also, no longer promotions or medals or even ribbons are a big negative in my eyes. I no longer felt like I was the PC but was watching him do things instead of me. A problem that's just painfully obvious when the series moves to FMV and live actors take over. There was difficulty in this game but it felt more like the difficulty was due to the games limitations rather than any added challenge made by the devs.

So there you have it. Might take a break for a bit.

Not sure if I want to continue this. Like I said, WC2 really got me down and SO1/SO2 seems like just more of a chore to get through.

Against my better judgement, I'm going to continue with WC2 with Special Operations 1 (no subtitle for this game)

Two Weeks After K'Tithrak Mang

Pembroke System. Enigma Sector

Pre-Mission: Admiral Tolwyns office. Confed has approved my promotion to Colonel. While we're here in Pembroke, I'm to be transferred to Special Operations Division headed by Paladin. Seems he's the sector head of SO in Enigma. That explains how mysterious he was being back in Ghorah Kar. No one "officially" transfers to SO division, so everyone but The admiral, Angel, and Hobbes will be told I'm going on extended R&R. But until then, there's still some enemies here in Enigma.

pIEjC.png

Those Silver Eagles sure do look nice on my shoulders

During Mission: Briefing Room. Angel informs us that with the victory at K'tithrak Mang, Confed now controls Enigma Sector. That's no reason to rest on our asses though. Pembroke system is the connecting system between Enigma and Vega sectors (haven't heard that name in a while). If the Cat's destroy Pembroke Station, it could seriously hamper troop movement. Stingray & I are on patrol. We're being sent in new P-64D "Super" Ferrets. Supposedly, they have better control systems but the real upgrade is that they now come equipped with Heat-Seekers.

Three Drakhai flown Sartha at Nav 1. I nail two of them but take some front armor damage. Stingray gets the last one as it tries to escape. Two regular Sartha at Nav 2 which I destroy quickly. Nav 3 is the real battle with a Kamekh and three Strakha stealth fighters. Stingray manages the corvette and I get two of the fighters but the last one escapes. We debrief Angel about the mission in her office after landing.

It's Just As I Said

She asks me if I heard that we lost the TCS Tsiolkovsky in the Rigel system earlier. It was a science vessel. She says she'd hate to see me go before Concordia jumps to Rigel and that she hopes that Confed assigns me as a CAG.

Twenty Minutes Later

Barracks - Stingray is a lot more jovial towards me since Jazz' reveal of being the traitor. He's heard that Jazz' trial will be before the week's end. He asks me about my R&R and I tell him that I'll be heading to Earth for some down time (everyone on board still thinks I'm taking some R&R since my SO missions are still hush hush)

During Mission: Briefing Room - Angel starts the briefing. Seems there are more cats out here than initially realized. Major Edmonds intercepted Kilrathi comm chatter suggesting that they're bringing in reinforcements. Stingray & I are to scout near the Pembroke Jump Point to catch any cats in the system.

Two Drakhri at Nav 1. I get both but the last one crashes into me destroying my front armor. Nav 2 is where the real party is. Two Fralthra's guarded by five Grikath's. I manage to nail three of the fighters while getting my aft armor shot up and Stingray counts for two. Since we can't take out those cap ships in puny Ferret's we head for Nav 3, skipping the asteroids in between. Nav 3 is empty so we head back to Concordia and notify them of our sighting.

Not sure really. I use a Saitek P990 usb controller with my old copy of Privateer. Don't know how GOG has set up their version. Wish I could help. Sorry.

Pembroke System. Enigma Sector

Pre-Mission: Flight Deck - Stingray's a little frazzled from our run in earlier but there's no time to rest as all pilots are immediately ordered to the briefing room.

During Mission: Briefing Room - Angel informs all the other pilots about me & Stingray's Fralthra sighting earlier and that the Concordia is moving into attack position. We're to guard her from fighters while she takes out those two cap ships. After that we must fly immediately to Pembroke station to defend it from enemies trying to destroy it. We launch in Sabers.

Doomsday + Stingray are my wingmen this mission. Upon launch, we are instantly thrust into battle. Four of some new kind of Kilrathi Fighter called a Gothri are attacking while the Capships duke it out. I take out two but get my forward armor shot off. Doomsday gets one and Stingray gets the other. We set course for Pembroke station after the Concordia kills the Fralthra with the Phase Transit Cannon. Mines in between us and Pembroke damage my starboard armor. Laughingly, three Grikath are heading for Pembroke but we nail them before they can even fire on the station with me getting two and Stingray nailing one before he ejects. I tractor him in not waiting for S&R to pick him up.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: Angel's Office - Doomsday, Stingray, & Myself inform Angel of our mission success and our encounter with those new cat heavy fighters.

It should be the same, just a default DOSBOX installation. Have you used the DOSBOX built-in configuration (CTRFL+F1) for the game (which creates the mapper.txt files I mentioned) or just the in-game calibration which just sets up a joystick and nothing else?

Btw will you be doing Privateer too here or don't consider it as fun?

I'm using an old copy of Privateer + D-fend reloaded (a dosbox frontend). The only trick I know of was to turn Timed from true to false then to calibrate in game.

Maybe. The problem I see is how to structure them since so many of the missions are just random pick ups used to gain more money to buy stuff. Hell, you can't even start the story missions till you've at least upgrades some first.

Pembroke System. Enigma Sector

Pre-Mission: Barracks - Game of Five Card Stud with me, Hobbes, Doomsday, and Stingray. Stingray asks me when I'm shipping for my R&R to which I reply right after we Jump to Rigel. Doomsday asks Hobbes if he's going on leave too. Hobbes says no, the admiral wants him here and then he will be reassigned to Ghorah Khar duty. Stingray notes that he's heard that three more cat planets are trying to rebel against the empire just as Ghorah Khar did ten years ago.

During Mission: Briefing Room - Angel starts the briefing. We've had some bad news coming out of Rigel system. Seems we lost contact from the Supply depot there as well as several Free Traders en route there. Concordia is going to jump there to assess the situation but first we need to clear the jump point of any enemies. I'm assigned to fly solo in a Broadsword to scout ahead first. I have to jump in clear the area then head to Nav 1 and then return Concordia. Because of the losses taken during the last campaign, we have a shortage of top gunnery officers for bomber missions. The gunnery stations will be manned by a pilot in addition to the gunnery teams. Angel is going to be my chief gunnery officer along with Loubet and Miller.

Three Jalkehi in the mine field on the way to Jump Point. I take minor damage (mostly from mines) but nail two and my gunners must have gotten the third. Jump Point is clear so I jump. Once I'm done jumping, I head to Nav 1. What awaits me there is strange. Four damaged Ferrets start attacking me. My gunners get one and I get the others with my FF missiles. Nav 1 clear, I head back to jump point, Jump then head to Nav 2. No enemies at Nav 2 so I head for Concordia and communicate my findings.

Post Mission Wrap-Up: Bridge - I inform the Admiral about my unusual run in with human pilots. He informs me that they had heard about the pilots on TCS Gettysburg had staged a mutiny near N'Tanya (one of the cat planets trying to rebel) several weeks ago. I say I've never heard about a Confed ship trying to mutiny and he says that if I had, that would be a serious security leak.

During Mission: Admiral Tolwyn's Office - The Admiral informs Hobbes and I that due to the situation here in Rigel, my mission for spec ops will be delayed. Hobbes protests that, though they may not be human, the citizens of Ghorah Khar are Confed and need to be protected. I say they should all be shot down for being pirates* but Tolwyn says we don't know what the situation is. They may have destroyed Rigel Supply Depot or not. With that out of the way, he orders me to Angels office for mission brief.

Ten Minutes Later

Angels Office - Concordia's intercepted a distress call from a Kilrathi Corvette. I'm to proceed to Nav 1 then to Nav 2 where my ships automatic signaler will begin transmitting an encoded message to the Gettysburg pilots. I mention to Angel about my feelings on the Gettysburg pilots but she says that the Admiral doesn't want us to fire on them. Once that's done, I have to proceed to Nav 3 and meet the Corvette. It may be a trap though. I'm assigned Sky & Shelton as wingmates in an Epee.

Nav 1 is three renegade Ferrets. I all three but I lose a missile and my forward & aft armor (GOD DAMN PIECE OF SHIT FIGHTER#@!#!$$). Nav 2 is clean. I arrive at the Kamekh just in time to see it destroyed by Six rebel flown Epees. I nail three but take a shit load of damage. I lose my target track, my radar, one gun, and my accel. absorbers while my ion drive, shield generator, repair, ejector, and power plant take damage. The last three die to my wingman. Two more Epee's in the asteroids on the way back. My wingmen get them both.

Just bought a Logitech Attack 3 to play WC 1, 2, and 3. I noticed that only the stick and the fire button work for WC 1 with default settings.

How do I bind different functions to the joystick for WC 1? I didn't see any in game options.

Also what the heck am I supposed to do in the first mission? I just fly around aimlessly.

I believe you can set up a profile with the Logitech Profiler software that will let you bind keys to specific joystick buttons.

First mission is hitting the nav points and returning home iirc. Hit A for autopilot and it should get you on your way to each nav point. N will bring up the nav map.

Here's a quick rundown of commands:
