Former Mozilla CTO: "Chrome won."

I use Firefox Desktop Browser for private important stuff like checking my email and making payments. (feel more secure)

I use Chrome Desktop Browser for entertainment stuff. Watching videos (and now for GAF) Just because it is quicker. And videos are smoother.

for my phone or tablet, I use Chrome Browser.

Firefox had too many memory issues. It is ridiculous that it only lasts a certain amount of time before it inevitably crashes. I used it for a very long time and indeed there are some plugins/ add ons that keep me using it irregularly but Chrome has indeed become my main browser.

And I welcome my google overlords.
Yup. I finally had to switch off because of the memory leaks. It's a shame.

I never liked Firefox, even back when it was Phoenix or when it was Netscape Navigator (being an old Opera and links/elinks fan). That said, it's the only meaningful alternative on Android to Google's browser engine, so it's worth considering at least on that platform (but even there I mostly use Lightning, which is a really light skin for Google's engine with ad-blocking and a couple useful gestures).

i use Chrome both on iOS and Desktop. Works perfectly

safari is joke on iPhone

Chrome is just a skin for Safari on iOS that lacks the native ad-blocking and integration features. If the Safari UI really turns you off or you're heavily invested in Chrome bookmarks, I can see why you'd go with Chrome, but that doesn't make Safari a "joke".

Still on an older version of Firefox where my porn/youtube add-ons work. They might work on the latest version but I haven't tested nor do I want to.

I still use Firefox for 2 reasons:

-I think it looks better, and I enjoy how customizable the look is
-I can use Pentadactyl and Vimperator

The minute those two thing go away at the end of the year, so do I.

I didn`t know the difference between Chrome and Firefox was so significant. I was talking about this last night with my wife, a Firefox user herself; when I showed her that graphic, she couldn`t believe it.

The IE situation is much worse. How could Microsoft lose this battle having had such an advantage? They are almost at a Windows Phone market share level...

...hate me...
Can't live without Safari on Mac/iOS but this could be foreseen miles away. I mean basically when Chrome was announced. The buzz from the get-go was too much to ignore, and even I used it for some years. And it still is my go-to non-Safari browser.

It's just another iOS/Android duopoly type of situation, really. It's sad, but you know, free market and all.

I have multiple browsers for various reasons. I've switched my primary back and forth from FF to Chrome several times now because one of them will just start shitting the bed with a particular site or issue after an update. Just the other day I switched back to Firefox from Chrome because Chrome started crashing constantly on an important site and I couldn't fix it no matter what I tried. I hope they both survive a long, long time.

The IE situation is much worse. How could Microsoft lose this battle having had such an advantage?

MS no longer pushes IE. It's all about Edge now. You can find IE on Win10 for legacy sake but you have to go digging for it.

I'm still using Firefox

Me too, still better Addons/extension than Chrome, I can surf on Mozilla with less worry because the extension do their fucking job unlike Chrome, i select what many choose as the best addon/extension and doesn't do a good job, I find the addons on Firefox work 100% if the time..

I can't give up on Firefox... even though performance is much better on Chrome. I can open so many more tabs quickly on Chrome, big struggle on Firefox.

What I don't get is people that use Safari on iOS for heavy mobile browsing. The UI is dogshit compared to a proper mobile browser like Dolphin.

I use both FF and Chrome.

Chrome always drops frames when watching 60fps videos on YouTube (ironic) or Twitch.

FF or Edge even, have no such issues.

I prefer the UI of Chrome though.

I use Waterfox on my PC and the office one and i have Firefox on my tablet.
While i never had any issues i feel that Chrome is not a safe browser.

I swear, I never had memory leaks nor performance issues either in Firefox.

I use it because I like it better, but also:

Choose Firefox Now, Or Later You Won't Get A Choice

I know it's not the greatest marketing pitch, but it's the truth.

Google is bent on establishing platform domination unlike anything we've ever seen, even from late-1990s Microsoft. Google controls Android, which is winning; Chrome, which is winning; and key Web properties in Search, Youtube, Gmail and Docs, which are all winning. The potential for lock-in is vast and they're already exploiting it, for example by restricting certain Google Docs features (e.g. offline support) to Chrome users, and by writing contracts with Android OEMs forcing them to make Chrome the default browser. Other bad things are happening that I can't even talk about. Individual people and groups want to do the right thing but the corporation routes around them. (E.g. PNaCl and Chromecast avoided Blink's Web standards commitments by declaring themselves not part of Blink.) If Google achieves a state where the Internet is really only accessible through Chrome (or Android apps), that situation will be very difficult to escape from, and it will give Google more power than any company has ever had.

Microsoft and Apple will try to stop Google but even if they were to succeed, their goal is only to replace one victor with another.

So if you want an Internet --- which means, in many ways, a world --- that isn't controlled by Google, you must stop using Chrome now and encourage others to do the same. If you don't, and Google wins, then in years to come you'll wish you had a choice and have only yourself to blame for spurning it now.

Of course, Firefox is the best alternative :). We have a good browser, and lots of dedicated and brilliant people improving it. Unlike Apple and Microsoft, Mozilla is totally committed to the standards-based Web platform as a long-term strategy against lock-in. And one thing I can say for certain is that of all the contenders, Mozilla is least likely to establish world domination :).

He addresses this in the blog post:

Eric mentioned in the blog post that Firefox added users last year. The relative Firefox market share declined from 16% to 14.85% during that period. For comparison, Safari Desktop is relatively flat, which likely means Safari market share is keeping up with the (slow) growth of the PC/Laptop market. Two possible theories are that Eric meant in his blog post that browser installs were added. People often re-install the browser on a new machine, which could be called an ”added user", but it comes usually at the expense of the previous machine becoming disused. It's also possible that the absolute daily active user count has indeed increased due to the growth of the PC/laptop market, despite the steep decline in relative market share. Firefox ADUs aren't public so it's hard to tell.

I'm actually not a fan of this since Google already dominates the web so thoroughly via Search, Ads, Browser, and Video (youtube).

And yes, I'm actually using Chrome, so I'm a hypocrite lol.

I would have kept using Firefox but then it began to crash and nothing stopped that train from repeatedly crashing.

I moved on.

I'm still using Firefox. Chrome does seem faster, but I've heard that it sends usage and browsing data to Google. Opera seemed nice too, but it doesn't seem to let you change the color theme.

At least on a mobile MacOS computer, there's simply no contest. Firefox and especially Chrome will chew through your battery much faster than Safari. But probably the biggest hurdle Firefox can't respond to is being an optional install. The majority of users don't really care about privacy, they like Chrome being able to sync stuff across their mobile devices or play with their Gmail. Firefox really can't compete in that sphere.

The new Opera for me, is incredible. It's based on Chromium too. Able to install majority of chrome extensions with no issues.

Chrome becomes a chore after a while of using it. Separate processes for each tab might be at play? Have had no problems with Opera while using it the exact same way.

Kinda fitting how Mozilla started from the ashes of Netscape after Microsoft won the first browser war only to lose to another megacorporation in Google.

The primary reason is most likely that IE's core user base post-Firefox has traditionally been older/less-knowledgeable users who either don't know that there are alternatives or don't care, and that crowd has moved to mobile for most if not all of their internet usage.

gkoberger 20 hours ago | parent | favorite | on: Chrome Won

I agree with this blog post. But I don't think Mozilla lost.

I worked for Mozilla for a few years, after seeing John Lily (CEO at the time) speak. It was right after Chrome started getting popular, and a smug person in the crowd asked him about how he felt about Chrome.

John's response was awesome. "This is the web that we wanted. We exist not because we want everyone to use Firefox, but because we wanted people to have a choice" Firefox was a response to a world of "best viewed in IE" badges, and it changed the browser landscape.

Now, we have options. Chrome is great, but so are Safari, Edge, Brave, Opera and Firefox. There's a lot of options out there, and they're all standards compliment. And that's thanks to Mozilla.

So, in my mind, Mozilla won. It's a non-profit, and it forced us into an open web. We got the world they wanted. Maybe the world is a bit Chrome-heavy currently, but at least it's a standards compliment world.

I hope Mozilla sees that. I hope they take credit, and move on to what's next: privacy and net neutrality. Our privacy is under attack, and Mozilla is one of the few companies that can (and would want to) help. I know, I know. Nobody cares about privacy. Nobody cared about web standards, either, but Mozilla bundled it into an attractive package and it worked. It's time for Mozilla to declare victory, high five the Chrome team, and move on to the next big challenge.

We really need someone to fight for our privacy and neutrality. And I really believe that this could be Mozilla's swan song.

Opera uses the same model as Chrome.

You WANT your browser to do this.

I jump between the two, some sites work better on one or the other and my VPN seems to have a better time with Firefox than Chrome.

I used to prefer firefox but over time a lot of the features I liked firefox for got changed and I ended up defaulting to chrome.

I tried sticking it out for the longest, but once the extensions caught up it was a no brainer, better performance, easier syncing. Chrome is the shit and deserves the marketshare.

The integration with my Android phone on Chrome and Google services makes it impossible for me to use any other browser. It's also fast and efficient.

There was a time when Firefox was all I used, but with time I just started to feel like somehow the experience became worse compared to all other options. I left and just never came back.

I mean, sure, the numbers don't lie.

But Chrome is garbage, full of holes and usability errors. Personally, I think it loses big time on a daily basis.

These comparisons are so laughable to me. Completely different era of software, computer usage, and of development. There was no market for browsers in 2001. Their were enthusiasts who even know that alternatives existed and there were people who used what was boxed in with Windows. Nobody actively chose IE6. People choose Chrome because it's a good browser. People develop for it because its development toolkit and support is better.

Android users (probably one of the biggest segments of Chrome users) don't choose Chrome. It is the default browser.

The desktop userbase probably also gets a decent bump due to the fact Chrome is advertised on google.com.

Happy Firefox/Edge user here. Edge performance is great and would be my sole main browser if it stops forgetting my tabs from the previous session at random.

I suspect that Chrome gets a huge boost from these messages you get from EVERY google site if you visit it with a different browser then Chrome, super annoying but luckily you can block them with an ad-blocker.

I never really got why I should care about Google using my private data.

I just don't understand when that's going to start harming my everyday life and I've been using their services for like a decade.
