Star Fox 2: Dreaming the Impossible Dream

The biggest news today within the bombshell of the SNES Classic is unquestionably Star Fox 2.

For myriad reasons (it was canceled over 20 years ago, the ideas have been subsumed into other Star Fox games, the series itself is not doing particularly well, and the controversies surrounding the FX chip) it seemed like an official release of this game would never, ever happen.

Star Fox is a series that is very near and dear to my heart. After losing my brother to suicide last year, I played through each entry of the series (including the unfinished rom of 2) and it definitely aided me in my coping. With the future of the franchise seemingly in limbo, getting this news today was extremely exciting and I can't wait to finally play Star Fox 2 as it was originally intended!

How about you, Gaf? Are there any games that seem like an impossibility to you that you now have hope for because of today's Star Fox 2 announcement? Believe!

Star Fox on N64 was my first and i loved it.

Recent instalments have been very bad

Maybe this will give it the shot in the arm the franchise needed

Mother 3 did happen--just not for all of us! But, I gotta believe that NA will get it some day. Nintendo seems to be doing a better job of actively listening to their fans. See: Metroid.

There are very few games (that we know of) that got that close to completion/release but were withheld for some weird reason. Most of the huge omissions are unlocalized stuff, like mother 3 or Seiken 3.

I'm having a hard time thinking of any more 'impossible' games releasing. like - maybe what was cobbled together at the beginnings of half-life 3? I dunno.

Given the Metroid announcements, then this, I'm expecting an F-Zero announcement within 12 months.

I actually just played Starfox 1 for the first time in years earlier this evening after reading about the SNES Mini. That is not a game that has aged well... so I'm not too optimistic about how much fun there'll be to be had from it's sequel at this stage.

This never seen impossible to me considering it was essentially completed.

Especially after the completed English translation of Mother was released over 20 years later on Wii U.

Hey StarPhlox, I'm so sorry to hear about your brother, but it made me happy to hear about the series helping you through such a tough time.

This is definitely an exciting announcement.

StarPhlox, I'm really sorry for your loss. I'm glad the SF games were able to provide a good coping mechanism. Which games did you enjoy most? Was this the first time you'd played some of them? :)

Silent Hills seems....quite unlikely but Mega Man Legends 3 is another game that I think fits this bill and has the possibility of being resurrected to great fanfare.

I'm really hoping that the SNES Classic isn't the last we see of the game, as I've been waiting 20+ years to play it at this point but I'm not terribly interested in acquiring a SNES Classic to do so.

I wonder if this starfox 2 will be any diferent than the leaked version the creator said that the leaked build lacked an important feature of the game.

Thanks, MaxCriden! Always enjoy your posts and I'm glad to see you in here with my first ever thread :)

Honestly I enjoyed all of them but it was my first time finishing any of the games outside of Star Fox 64 which I had played through probably dozens of times as a kid.

Command was one I ended up liking a lot more than I expected despite the cheesy fanfic stuff that was hilariously bad.

Adventures is utterly bizarre in its own way but I found it to be a really fun and competent Zelda-like.

Zero I actually loved and I'm surprised at how quickly I got proficient with the controls. Still hoping that it gets another chance on Switch!

The biggest surprise for me came from Assault! The music was amazing and despite all of the negativity I had heard around the game it really impressed me. It did a good job of advancing the lore of the universe and having gameplay that was faithful to the original and 64 even if the on-foot missions were just serviceable.

Overall it is an odd and great series to me :)

Not just essentially. It was fully completed. We learned that from another follow-up interview with Cuthbert some time ago. Nintendo let them play the finished ROM during pre-production of SF Command (which adapted some stuff from SF2).

This was one of those dreams that felt like it couldn't happen. After Earthbound Beginnings I had hope. Glad to see the wait is finally over :)

Love the style of this game the most in the series. Can't wait to see the differences in the final version once it's out.

This is awesome, i think i messed with the rom a fews back, but it was broken as shit. I'm sure this won't hold up, but please bring this to the switch.

Now all I need are RE 1.5 and RE 3.5 to complete the triangle of childhood disapponments.

Super excited to play Star Fox 2. Even if it's a 6/10 I'm just a fan of the series and have always been curious about this one.

Let's hope it sees a VC release because you know those SNES Minis are already sold out and discontinued.

I was surprised to see BOTH SNES Star Fox Games get included in the SNES Classic. I mean...okay, Star Fox 2 is a mostly finished game, but Nintendo really releasing it? That is quite interesting. Likely implies that SNES emulation is greatly improved, with the NES and SNES Classic being 'testing grounds' for whenever they bring the VC to the Switch.

Regarding 'dream games', I guess Mother 3 could release in the future in English (though the fan-translation is out, so...people can just by the official GBA cart to avoid feeling 'guilty' for playing the fan-translation). If we are getting TWO new Metroid games in the future, than anything could happen honestly.

Between this finally getting released, and me getting to play the Nintendo/Playstation prototype a month ago, it's like closing a loop from my childhood in the early 90s.

It will, that one was not a finished build.

here we go:

In a neat twist, it would be during the production of Star Fox Command that Cuthbert was re-acquainted with his past, ill-fated project. "During development we received a copy of the mastered Star Fox 2 ROM to play, and it was quite a blast." This ROM would have been the final game, complete with QA tweaks and ready for a release that never happened. Cuthbert is keen to point out that this version is far superior to the numerous leaked prototype ROMs which are currently doing the rounds on the web - the leaking of which has been erroneously attributed to himself. "There are a few ROMs on the net in various conditions," he states. "But the ones I checked out are all old and they don't have the randomizing Rogue-like stuff working or all the encounters in place, so you don't really get the feel of the game we were making."

Here's something more impossible than Star Fox 2, which was probably lying around Nintendo warehouse for a while like Earth Bound [Beginnings] and the impossible part is they decided to show it off, although not in my... favorite way.

OoT N64DD expansion that got scrapped in favor of Majora's Mask.

What did you expect?

Maturity, bitches.
One of the true impossible SNES games is Unirally/racer since that was literally killed by the courts. It would require Pixar admitting they are idiots for it to be reversed.

Other SNES games of interest are of course the BS titles. Games like F-Zero 2 and Wrecking Crew '98 are pretty much complete games, but of course the famous BS Zelda: The Stone Tablets is a far trickier deal if the original radio dialogue is expected (though with BotW, Zelda dubs are now a thing).

Star Fox 2 has always been one of my holy grails and it excites me that I'll finally be able to get it. I once got to ask Miyamoto about it and if we would ever see some of the unique gameplay mechanics in future Star Fox titles since it never came out. Heh, I'm probably one of the few people that will be in this thread who got to play it legitimately too. I can't wait for this!

I actually think Star Fox 1 has aged very well all things considered. It's still quite fun to play, has a lot of replay value and the music is awesome.

It will be at least somewhat. The rom was actually unfinished and unplayable until hackers fixed it.

Dylan Cuthbert (OG developer of StarFox) said that the completed rom existed in Nintendo, and I think he said the rom that was out there wasn't the full thing.

I don't expect a lot of different content at all. But just having the real thing, not needing to be hacked to play, will be worth it.

yeah this is interesting as the version the internet has is not the actual final version. So it'll be new to everyone the first time around.

Maybe even Mother 4 one day.

Nah, you have the way bigger Shigesato Itoi obstacle in the mix with that one.

See my post above for quote and full details.

Releasing Starfox 2 is certainly something I don't think anyone would have expected Nintendo to do. Then again, I doubt anyone was genuinely expected Nintendo to ever green light Prime 4...

Breath of the Wild and Odyssey evolving their respective franchises instead of playing it safe, the Switch being marketed much better, new successful franchises like Splatoon and ARMS? Maybe a new start for Nintendo, when it comes to listening to fans?

Now they just need to fix Paper Mario and Mario Party

Boy I can't wait for the proper introduction of two new female characters for the internet to draw never ending amounts of furry porn for. Krystal's got her work cut out for her now.

I want Star Fox 2 but I could do without the above

I'm a bit biased, because the original Star Fox is one of my most favorite games. It does suffer a bit from pushing the SNES to the brink, but I think it's still a pretty good game in it's own right. It can certainly take some getting used to not having a reticle if you're used to Star Fox 64, though. Meteor in particular still offers a sense of exhilaration, making it feel like you're racing across the surface at high speeds.

I'm really interested how different the build of Star Fox 2 is. That's the big selling point of the SNES classic to me.

You could really trace this back to releasing Earthbound worldwide (!) on VC. It's not really just a recent thing.

Finally the real sequel to Star Fox is coming out properly. This will make up for all the mediocre Star Fox games this past decade or so.

Yep. I think once they saw the response to that they opened up a lot more internally on bringing over or releasing cancelled games or game releases.

Kinda makes me wonder if they'd try something similar for an N64 classic.

I assume you mean Earthbound Beginnings/Mother 1

StarFox 2 would still be the first release of a totally unreleased game, though (at least Mother 1 came out in Japan)

At least since Zelda Master Quest/Ura Zelda. ;)
