Limbo of the Lost stole from Oblivion, Morrowind, UT2K4, Diablo, Silent Hill, more?

The developers apparently came back to work today, as a source connected to Majestic issued to GameSpot the following statement from the studio:

"In response to the shocking notification that some alleged unauthorized copyrighted materials submitted by sources external to the development team have been found within the PC game Limbo of the Lost, we (the development team) have given our consent and full cooperation to both publishers who are recalling all units from all territories immediately.

Please be assured that we do not condone in anyway the use of unauthorized copyrighted materials and if we had been made aware earlier, we would of course have ceased development of the product and rectified the issue prior to the publication process.

To the best of our knowledge no one at Majestic, [European publisher] G2Games or [North American publisher Tri Synergy, Inc.] knew about this infringement and knowingly played any part in it.

We can only apologise to all regarding this issue, as a team we are shocked and mortified regarding these events and we continue to work with said publishers in order to rectify the issue.

What is this? They are a three man crew right?

Interesting.

Yeah, they are technically a three-person group but we do know they at least hired one outside contractor (for some of the music, at least). So, it could be possible they hired a few people for the backgrounds. This still doesn't explain away the various promotional videos and their copyright infringements.

If true, it is kind of an anticlimactic ending to this story. I kind of doubt it, though.

So the 'Project Lead/Artist' had no idea he was ripping off all those games ?

What a load of shit.

If only someone had told them in 1995...

Yeah, I'm not out for a witch-hunt but I call bullshit on his being ignorant about what was going on.

Taken from http://www.justadventure.com/Interviews/Limbo/SteveBovis.shtm

Sure, the team consists of: -

Tim Croucher (UK) - Researcher and assistant vocalist, game designer/playtester.

I met Tim right at the beginning of the project, we were both adventure game fans and decided to make an adventure game of our own – Limbo of the Lost was born.

Laurence Francis (UK) – Puzzles, Lead vocalist and assistant game designer/Musician.

Laurence joined the team when we were starting the Amiga version and has been a strong member ever since. Laurence is the voice of the main character – Benjamin Spooner Briggs as well as other characters in LIMBO.

Marko "Gravehill" Hautamäki (Germany) – Level-Atmosphere Musician.

I got to know Marko from a forum I was on and he was looking to work on a game project. I heard some of his work and was suitably impressed. To date he has done more than 13 musical pieces for the game. Marko is the newest team member.

Lisa Highsted (UK) – Contracts and Support

Lisa sorts out contract negotiations / publishers, she joined the team on the PC version of the game. She also play-tests and reviews content on a regular basis.

Heather Banks (UK) – Playtester & Support

Heather helps out on playtesting the game, general development feedback and development support. She too joined the team on the PC version

Myself - Steve Bovis (UK) - Creative/Project Director

That then leaves me, my job is to put the game together and create all the visuals, coding, sounds, models, marketing and basically make the game flow and work. As well as manage and try to motivate the team. A job that is hard enough at the best of times!

As you can see we are a small team and with that comes pluses and minuses, the plus is that development costs are low and we have 100% creative decision. The negative is the time it takes to create game content with such a small team.

I don't see any mention of out sourcing here, Mr Bovis.

Not trying to give the developers too much credit, but that comparison is somewhat of a stretch IMO. There are some clear differences between the two backgrounds. I do think it would be hilarious if they were stealing assets as far back as the Amiga version, but that comparison doesn't prove it for me. It would help if that guy's head wasn't in the way.

Put your mouse on pretty much any of the lines on the floor or wall.

I see that, but the LOTL picture is off center and not the same size as the Guy Spy picture. Looks like they were lined up for that gif.

I'm not saying that it's not possible that it's stolen, but trying to give at least some benefit of the doubt here :p

Personally, I don't think that comparison works, either.

It's your standard "how to draw a long hallway" fare. Even with the lines like that, it's not particularly damning.

You are joking right?
1) The majority of lines (ie, NOT the ones that were added to fill in the doorways) match up perfectly.
2) As pointed out, the T shape on the back of the wall is identical too.
3) The ceiling shape and position is identical.
4) The top angled walls are the same, in the same place, exactly.

They have simply drawn in the doorways to cover up the fact that they nabbed the background.

Look at the area of contrast and difference in colour on the far wall above the guys left shoulder, it's the same art.

So lemme guess, it was the one armed man who provided the backgrounds? How do they explain the numerous trailer rip-offs? Spawn, Crysis, etc.

You totally got the name backwards on the quotes!

But, yes, I've seen the picture. I still feel the same way. D:

I know its really been a while but I've been curious for months to whatever happen to these developers that made this horrific game. Have they been sued, marked dead, mia??? I've been following this since I was a lurker back in the Summer.

People typically bump ancient threads when they have information, not when they want information. Just sayin'.

I thought this thread was archived. It should have been.
