Shouzou Kaga (Fire Emblem creator) developing doujin game with SRPG Studio

Shouzou Kaga, the creator of Fire Emblem, hasn't made a commercial game in 10 years. Back then, he had just completed Berwick Saga, his second game after leaving Intelligent Systems around 5 years beforehand.

However things could be changing very soon.

On his purported blog, he has announced plans to develop a free doujin game (fan game) using the recently released SRPG Studio, used to create strategy RPGs like Fire Emblem.
This might be a bit sudden, but I decided to start making a doujin game with some friends, hahaha.

Already, he has a staff of around 10 people, including professionals and is currently negotiating with a character designer–potentially an “amazing artist”. Music-wise, he already has somebody in mind (and even tells readers to hazard a guess).
We're still negotiating with a character designer, but we might just get an amazing artist here.
Music is a future issue, but I already have a name in mind. (Take a guess, haha)

Despite that, he is lacking a number of resources, mostly graphical.
In order to increase the game's quality, we're looking for runtime graphic contributions we could use for free: unit sprites, battle animations, effects, map tiles, parts, background music, sound effects, background images, etc. Those who have made or obtained (with permission from the original author) such resources, please give us a hand.

Notably, we're in serious need of map sprites and battle animations, as they are sorely insufficient at the present.

To resolve this, Kaga is requesting users to donate assets to his project, so long as they abide by his rules and do not infringe on other peoples' copyright.

Kaga stresses that he and his staff have limited time to work on the game, so he can’t provide an estimated release date. But if everything goes smoothly, he will post about it on his blog.

His thoughts on SRPG Studio:
These tools seem to be very solidly designed. I've only fiddled with them for around 10 hours, but the test map I made didn't leave me a bad impression. We should be able to do interesting things once we add scripts into the mix.
I exchanged some mails with the creator(s), they were very polite and friendly. Of course we're completely unrelated, this is by no means stealth marketing, hahaha.

His final comment:
This is basically a project with friends and acquaintances, but we’d welcome a sprite artist. It’s our biggest weak point, so we’d warmly welcome you if you’re enthusiastic.

Wow, I thought we'd never hear about that guy ever again. And he's making it in a strategy game app? Weird. That's like... finding out that the original team behind Chrono Trigger is working on a new game in RPG Maker. Good luck to him!

It is very hard to unlearn my teenage understanding of "doujin" meaning pornographic manga.

Doujin only means fan based work. There are doujin games of all kind and obviously doujin manga, but they can be anything from pornographic to non pornogaphic.

The term doujin to refer to sexually explicit manga isnt a wrong term, really, but its more than just that

Oh snap, new Shozo Kaga game? Fuck yeah. I'm finishing up my Tearring Run and I'm thinking of starting Berwick Saga again sometime soon. Good timing. =o

I was just thinking about what a shame it is that Kaga seemingly disappeared. Can't wait to see what he comes up with.

Think of "Doujin" as the Japanese equivalent of the word Indie. There may be differences but that's basically the same thing.

It has been so long since we've heard of this guy. I can't wait to play this game!

It's going to be hilarious if this game ends up being better than the recent Fire Emblem games. :p

I thought doujin was porn Manga
Yeah. I feel bad that whenever I hear the phrase "Doujin" or "Doujin Game", I automatically think it is going to be an H-Game.

I mean, it is Japan, who knows how many Game Artists and Developers have done H in their spare time? I mean, some pretty famous character designers are renowned for their porn.

Very happy with this news and I hope Kaga and his team will successfully complete their project.

I'm willing to bet that Tsujiyoko will be contributing to the music. At least I hope it's possible.

Cool to hear there's new tools available for old stalwarts to start making games with. I'd love to see Koji do illustrations for this, but he's busy with board games and light novels, so oh well.

She's still an IS employee according to Wiki.

Composer's likely to be Minako Seki (who did Tearring and Berwick).

Update: Kaga mentions that he has found enough helpers and is no longer seeking assistance. He thanks everyone for co-operating and warns that he will remove his recruitment post soon.

There was me worried his project wouldn't get any traction.

This is a good distinction to make, as most people are only familiar with what Fire Emblem turned into after this guy left.

Excited for this. Why doesn't he turn it into a Kickstarter, though?

I'm really hoping this is a joke/sarcastic post. Although even if it is I'm sure there ars plenty thinking the same thing.

The games industry in Japan has collapsed. The only things that sell are fan service and mobile games. Keiji Inafune and Koji Igarashi have already switched to Kickstarting porn manga games. Now Shouzou Kaga. I'm sure Hideo Kojima will follow suit once MGSV wraps up.

This is the future of gaming, buddy. I just hope all these hentai games get localized so I don't have to play with pixel mosaic or black bars over the penguses and stuff.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert).

Is it strange to hope for any "official localization" for this particular game? I kind of want to play it now that I've heard about it, but...yeah. That bit might be the problematic part.

Perhaps he should consider a Kickstarter for the project. That would definitely help with getting the necessary resources. Anyone planning to email him?

Masterful. I seriously cracked when I saw "Hideo Kojima"
