How is Gear VR for gaming?

My girlfriend got a Samsung S7 today so VR is finally a possibility for me to try out (don't have the PC rig to get a Oculus or Vive) so I was wondering how the experience was/how are the games?

I've heard it's not really, it's most still in the proof-of-concept realm, lots of little experiences like short film type things but nothing meaty. Mileage may vary, I don't own one.

Pretty lame. Cool idea but almost no fun games imo.

But that also goes for the desktop experience, I'm still waiting for actual games and not just tech demos.

It's best as a general on the go immersive media device, there are good games like Dead Secret but nothing really you'll be coming back to time and again like the pc (and soon console) hmds. I like it for the virtual cinema environment, the Netflix app (that puts you in a ski chalet environment in front of a big screen), and the various 180/360 video content spread out on the various streaming apps, and yes porn too.

That said it's still damn impressive something like Dreadhalls runs on it well, ditto for Ocean Rift that has some great animation on the sea creatures. Minecraft is alright on it but the lod is bad and for some reason motion sickness is more prominent with it than other gamepad VR games on Gear.

I enjoyed Gunjack quite a bit and everyone is amazed the first time they try it. It's a cool novelty but I have yet to meet an owner who uses it extensively. Its not comfortable to wear for more than 30 to 40 minutes and a controller is more enjoyable than using the buttons on the side of the headset.

Did you notice how Samsung was giving them away with a Galaxy S7 and nobody talks about the product now? Seems like a great indicator. VR is on its way out unless PSVR can turn it around (hint: it won't)

Not sure how much more powerful S7 is over S6 Edge (I had Edge 6)

Its an amazing introduction to VR, and is great for watching 3D content etc.

For games, I found it very frustrating because I could only play 5-10 mins before the phone would overheat and Gear forces itself to suspend at that point.

Its also uncomfortable to use the control pad on the Gear, since you have to hold up your hand by your head which gets tiring quick - this is solved using a gamepad controller.

As a showcase for VR, its amazing and I think the price is very reasonable.

Its like a cool intro though since for me with S6 Edge its just not practical to play VR games due to the suspend issue. I also found I would get quite hot wearing it too.

The Rift is a LOT more comfortable and is a huge step up graphically, but I think a Gear is a great introduction to see if you will like what PC VR (or PSVR) has to offer cheap. The sense of scale is just as impressive on Gear as the expensive PC headsets.

You can get a lot of good stuff free too.

never tried it but there's a handful of decent Gear VR games in the oculus store i've played on my rift. Dreadhalls in particular is pretty fantastic

Anshar Wars 2 is $10 but is a great spaceship game that, if you buy on Gear VR also means you get the game on Rift. On Rift the sense of 3D is incredible and its the most impressive looking space game on Rift in terms of showing space in 3D (gameplay is simpiler than games like Elite of course)

Smash hit is great and free

Abe VR is short but awesome (experience not a game)

Ocean rift is more an experience than a game, but the shark tank is a great first experience to demo VR to newcomers

Lands End is a cool game with impressive sense of scale, easy to play and only $3.99

Gunjack is a simple game but graphically impressive and fun.

There are a lot of free games and experiences that I recommend downloading and trying before paying for anything (just try them all that are free)

It's got a nice little collection of introductory VR experiences. I'm packing mine up to bring Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes to a game night right now.

I'm still pissed about the fact that there are no racing games for the thing. I mean, i thought that genre was a no brainer for VR and yet there's nothing.

I did not enjoy playing games on it AT ALL. But the adult entertainment is INCREDIBLE. Literally can't go back to 2D...it's that good.

There's VR Karts, which is a mediocre kart game that's a little more novel because of VR.

Great experience. Good entry to VR. Wouldnt play many games on it though. Phone gets hot fast. If you can buy it cheap then good. Its fun watching family use it for the first time and their reactions. Had some pretty cool vids with my nieces watching the Jurassic World demo.

Got scared as hell.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong...it just seems like everything is HUGE and distorted like a fisheye lens.

If I had to give a grade I'd give it a C. Pretty cool concept, and for someone like me who doesn't own a gaming PC or a PS4, it's a good intro to VR. Having said that, the screen door effect, fogging, phone overheating, and blurry non HD videos make it almost impossible for me to be immersed. I first thought that I had a fault device/phone because it the videos were so blurry. Like others have mentioned, certain games are wonderful though. For $100, (if you have money to throw around) it's worth it.

I can't stand the terrible screen door.

Same here. We have one in the office with an S7 and I cannot stand the image quality. I thought higher res = less screen door. Way worse in video than the Rift. Haven't tried the PSVR yet, hear it's great for its resolution but my if I keep my preorder is still in limbo.

Are you watching Naughty America? Their scale is awful on Gear VR, so you should steer clear. WankzVR, BadoinkVR, and Virtual Real Porn are all great in terms of scale. WankzVR easily wins out in terms of girls IMO. It has the big-name talent.

You may have just changed my life.

This is a most useful advice. Thank you very much, sir.

Its definitely cool but the games are pretty lacking. Anshar Wars 2 was pretty fun and actually kept me engaged for a few hours, it's basically a VR Starfox clone that you can even play effectively without a contoller. Land's End was a pretty cool laid back kind of game I enjoyed, that lasted about 2 hours iirc. I'm sure Minecraft is cool too but I haven't tried it (I have a Rift and a Vive so thats enough VR for me lately lol). But most of the available software are minigames or tech demos. Very much a mobile game market as of now.

The gaming is ok. Get yourself a cheap but decent bluetooth controller

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EO5QPN2/?tag=neogaf0e-20

(That's the one I use, but the price has gone up slightly since I bought it)

and a pair of wired headphones (not bluetooth since that has issues with VR) and play some fun games here and there. I have a huge head and I'm still able to use it comfortably, and the while the games aren't up to the same scale as the HTC Vive or the Rift, it's a fun way to get VR for cheap that works a lot better than Google Cardboard.

You can get easily get a Gear VR for less than the $100 msrp if you do some shopping and for cheap headphones...check out Office Max/Depot. I spent about two years working there and I'll tell you, that with the mixture of them constantly stocking electronics that nobody knows they stock and their desire to have new stock on the shelf, they clearance out stuff fast. I have a nice pair of Skullcandy Hesh 1 that I paid $15 for, plus tons of other headphones and random accessories for really cheap.

There are a quite a few very good games on the system. I've had it for about a month now and couldn't be happier with my purchase. I use it primarily as a games machine, too. Right off the bat, spend the cash and get the Steelseries XR Bluetooth controller.

VR in general is missing the diversity of solid games, no matter if you have the GEAR, RIFT, or the VIVE. The experiences are very comparable this early in the cycle.

Accepting that, If i had to list the MUST HAVES (that aren't the obvious picks like Gunjack, Anshar Wars 2, or End Space), you can't go wrong with:

1.) Land's End - From the creators of Monument Valley, it's like really simplified version of The Witness in some ways. Pretty to look at. Too short (only 5 Chapters), but what's there is pretty engaging. Got a lot of early buzz which possibly put it into the overhype category, but it's still a good game.

2. Smash VR - This game caught me totally off guard. I heard that it was good but hadn't done much research. Picked it up on and didn't touch it until i had downtime in the airport en route to EVO. Let me tell you...This might be one of my favorite games on the system. It's fast paced, worth replaying, and takes great advantage of the 'gaze based' mechanic of where you look, you interact. The whole game consists of breaking a series of glass obstacles before they hit you as you progress rapidly through a surreal environment.
It's fantastic fun and keeps ramping up the difficulty. Very immersive, super arcadey, and an overall great showcase game.

3. Minecraft VR - Seriously, it's Minecraft. In VR. While you're at it, add Hitman Go to the list. Again, VR might not add a lot to the experience, but it's such a great game that it doesn't really matter.

4. Viral - So it's a physics-based shooter where you launch orbs against a stream of antagonistic sarcastic asshole robots. They also shoot back at you. Sounds simple, but it's a great deal of fun as levels start to play with position, depth, height, and of course, enemy priority. The difficulty ramps up fairly quickly, and you'll find that VIRAL will become one of your defacto VR games for a challenging experience.

5. BombSquad - Here's one of those blink and you'll miss it VR experiences. Best described as bomberman meets Powerstone, it's an arena-based battle game where you position bombs and tripmines, or kick and punch your way to domination by being the last man standing against enemy waves of bombadiers, evil robots, and ninjas. And of course, it's multiplayer, too.

6. Floorplan VR - it's a very simple adventure puzzle game that's big on charm. The entire experience takes place within a single elevator. Each floor has it's own zany story with a new key piece of the overall mystery that you have to solve. On the top floor is an incomplete astro-suit, and you're tasked with finding all of the other pieces on all of the other floors. Finding the components won't be as simple as asking for them, though. Different puzzles have solutions on different floors, and nothing, of course, comes easy. It's a game that I'm dragging out resolving, because I don't want it to end.

Anyway, I could name at least several more games. I avoided putting any of the big atmosphere games here like Dark Days, Dreadhalls, Annie Amber, Dead Secret, or The Affected, because talking about them would be TLDR. Short version: They're great.

I also excluded 'b-tier' experiences that are totally serviceable, but wouldn't get the time of day if they weren't in VR. That means they're playable but generic, but get shine by virtue of working adequately and simply doing what they're supposed to do. Games like Herobound: First Steps, Omega Agent, Perfect Moon, and Adventure Time fall into this category.

I know that I'm missing a few gems. I still have ever several games that I own, but haven't truly dug into like Espers 2, Darknet, or Twisted Realms.

There is a LOT to enjoy on the platform. Give it a chance. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
