EA knock themselves off the top spot with the highly anticipated ‘Battlefield 1’ debuting at No1 (PS4, Xbox One and PC).

The Battlefield series, developed by Digital Illusions has been around since 2002’s PC only ‘Battlefield 1942’ and the current release is a definite return to form, outselling the combined week 1 sales units of the previous 2 versions (‘Battlefield 4’ in 2013 and ‘Battlefield Hardline’ in 2015). ‘Battlefield 1’ week 1 sales units are just under the amount generated by Ubisoft’s week 1 for ‘Tom Clancy The Division’ back in week 10 this year. EA’s ‘FIFA 17’ drops to No2 after 3 successive weeks at No1 (-36%) and 2K/Take 2 remain at No3 with ‘Mafia III’ (-59%). Microsoft drop 2 places to No4 with ‘Gears of War 4’ (-76%). The second highest new entry at No5 is Warner’s PS4 and Xbox One ‘Batman: Return to Arkham’.

There are 2 other new releases within the Top40: debuting at No15 is 2K/Take 2’s ‘Civilization VI’ for PC and debuting at No19 is Warner’s ‘Lego Harry Potter Collection’ on PS4.

76% seems like a steep drop for Gears 4. Anyone know how this compares to the norm? I.e. other big Sony/MS exclusives like Uncharted, Halo, God of War, etc?

First thought WTF reading this sentence:
The Battlefield series, developed by Digital Illusions has been around since 2002’s PC only ‘Battlefield 1942’ and the current release is a definite return to form, outselling the combined week 1 sales units of the previous 2 versions
More than BF3 and BF4 combined? Till i read Hardline. Forgot this was a thing (i even bought it for 5 € and played a bit MP and through the campaign).

Also never knew that DICE is short for "Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment".

Like with all the previous BFs i'll wait for one of the 1000 sales it's going to get (PS4) and grab it for 15 / 20 € a while later. Playerbase will be solid for a long time nonetheless.
Backlog first before i dedicate my already little MP/gaming time to BF1.

Big drop for PSVR titles
I'm surprised they charted, headsets are thin on the ground at least in my area they are. Ohh and congrats dice, bf1 deserves all the sales for having the balls to take an fps somewhere it's barely been and with the flag ship brand too risky but paid off.

Big drop for PSVR titles
Of course. There are only a few 10k PSVR headsets out there in the UK (my guess is ~70k). Games won't chart long. And a lot of these people will buy the €20 / €30 VR games digital.

90% digital 4-Life

U4 had a 78% drop. 60-70% drops is generally the norm for big second week releases.
Yeah, but Uncharted 4 had a huuuuge first week.

Expected drop for Gears especially with BF out. But boy how the mighty have fallen. It's tough releasing a shooter in a world of Battlefield and CoD domination. Pubs should learn to release them as far away as they can.

Decent for BF, but considering the hype and positivity surrounding it, they aren't mind blowing. We'all see how CoD fares but will no doubt be down and god help Titanfall.

Lower than Battlefront, too much for those millions of Youtube "likes".

Also I didn't remember BF4 launch numbers, it was awful.

Second week worse than Judgement and its pretty much a wash between the two. You'd expect at least Gears 4 proper with Rod Fergusson's Coalition to carry a bit more over Judgement.

I think we're looking at a similar launch number to Gears for Titanfall and lower than the originals. Can't believe they sandwiched it right bang in between BF and CoD. Just wow.

I know these figures are often not specific, but have you accidentally just confirmed that Gears 4 sold 94,000 copies at retail in its launch week?

Fair enough, thanks.

Funny because battlefront was hated since launch and Battlefield the opposite.
But star wars is always star wars.

That's just the upper limit (worked out from Gears4 being below Mafia3 and the percentage drop from last week). It could still be less.

And I guess Star Wars was a bigger sales draw than I'd assumed.

And RotR held better in chart position but I wonder what that translates to in actual sales.

Good numbers for B1 but less than I expected. Less than Division is not something to grab about too.

Let's see if it can track ahead B4 that have better weeks with XB1 and PS4 launch.

Fair enough. I just thought from the weekly charts it had been established that Gear 4's upper limit was 105,000, so I was wondering why he was focusing on the 94,000 figure specifically.
Because with this week drop and position on chart you can see the upper limit is not 105k anymore but 94k.

It can even become lower in next weeks being each time more accurate to real number.

More data coming = more close to actual debut number.

Gears of War 4 being on the same path as Judgment is probably not what Microsoft hoped, though there is digital and Windows 10 sales to take into account.

But I can't see God of War 4 having a similar reception as Ascension, it will be way bigger.

Holy shit, MS no longer has that big franchise this gen.

Gears, Halo are both outsold by Uncharted 4.

Sony's strategy of diverse IPs is paying off big time.

Gears of War 4 being on the same path as Judgment is probably not what Microsoft hoped, though there is digital and Windows 10 sales to take into account.

But I can't see God of War 4 having a similar reception as Ascension, it will be way bigger.

Series need to evolve. Breath of the Wild is probably the biggest change-up ever in the Legend of Zelda series, and interest in that is at a fever pitch. God of War's reinvention came at a perfect time IMO as myself and I'm sure many people were sick of the old Kratos and the Greek setting. I can understand why The Coalition & MS decided to double-down on the classic Gears style, but for a ten-year old series with 5+ instalments it's probably not going to rope in any new fans to the franchise.

Man, Forza still in top 10 is so good to see. I expect Gears to remain there for a good while too.

I don't TBH. I think with 3 shooters out in the space of 2 weeks it's going to be quickly forgotten about. Especially when it's been such a weak launch. Unless the price isn't slashed soon I can't seeing hanging about for long.

God of War 4 will only need to sell 25,000 units to have a bigger launch than God of War: Ascension.

God of War and God of War II had an even weaker launch.

NOOOOO Rocket League has fallen out the top 10 for the 1st time since release, still selling incrediably well though and the game has amazing legs, both digitally and pyhsically.
