ME3 was the first big game I played with this model and it is frankly the way all multiplayer should be. Overwatch is the best modern example of it I guess, but I'm glad BioWare was doing it first in AAA.

Oh I wasn't referring to the whole Javik thing. ME3 had a playable Collector released as part of a multiplayer expansion. You could buzz around with its little wings.
