What's the big deal with this film? Wasn't Troy lesson enough that Hollywood + Greek "history" = crap? I mean, Thermopylae is a great anecdote, but it's a human one, not a RAAAAAR TOPLESS MEN GO HACK HACK HACK one. And come on, Gerard Butler? The worst Phantom of the Opera ever?

Prediction: this film will actually be shit, but have a big fanboy audience because people get chopped up.

You do all know the Spartans were generally meat-headed paedophiles, right?

This isn't based on Greek "history", but on one of THE Frank Miller best graphic novels. That's a much better origin Troy could ever hope for.

What was the deal with that?
Last week they were running a deal where if you bought any DVD, you could get a free "Making of 300" bonus DVD that also included a coupon redeemable for a free (up to $10.50) movie ticket to see 300. It was also available for purchase at $9.99.

The bonus DVD is all of the production diaries that've been released online, plus a new short featurette on the film, as well as a trailer for the PSP game. No actual movie trailer though, which is sort of a downer. I know it's online, but you'd think that was something they would've included.

you think the game's fighting levels will all be slowmo?

i had a feeling that this movie was going to have a lot of slow motion in it, and i was worried that it would be during all the action sequences (from watching the commercials). i can see using the slow motion to make it look more epic. depending on how it is used it could turn out really well, or it could not. either way i'm still looking forward to seeing it friday.

This is going to be like Sin City. Massive net hype, little hype in real life (except with teenagers), and nobody will remember it a year after.
meh, so what? i'll still see it an enjoy it like i did with sin city.

btw is there anyone here who lives in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area of Michigan? We could have a GAF meetup or something. I know Cheebs lives about an hour away but he's too racist to contact me.

I live in the Downriver area, but will not be seeing this until "Day 2" in hopes that the most rabid/frothing geeks will be too busy working at WalMart during the day on Saturday to go :/

After seeing Attack of the Clones (man that name isnt going to get any better with age) at a packed theatre and having to sit next to some random neckbeard who literally moaned every time Natalie Portman was on screen --- never again!

Also im highly bummed the IMAX theatre at Henry Ford museum isnt showing 300. weak!

I don't care what the reviews say...Whether it's 4/4 or 0/4 I'm so psyched for 300. I'll definitely be there opening night. Been a fan of the graphic novel for years.

First "rotten" review for 300? Yep, you guessed it... by a chick.

Snyder's depiction of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, in which 300 Spartans fought off a much larger Persian army, is so over-the-top it's laughable -- so self-serious, it's hard to take seriously.

Way to miss the point lady:lol

300 isn't for women.

You can't expect somebody to enjoy what appears to be the most testosterone induced, ball stomping action movie of the year if they have neither the balls, nor the testosterone within. Women lack the genetic make-up to enjoy 300.

Taking a woman to see 300 is like taking a blind person to an art gallery.

I'm seriously getting as many friends as possible to see this movie Friday night. Snakes On a Plane part 2 is all but confirmed.

There's a braille section in nearly every art gallery.

don't tell me you like to clap during movies too
Oh trust me, I hate it when shit like that happens. It's only on the rarest of occasions, specifically just this and Snakes On a Plane that I would even fathom of such a thing. If the movie is seriously good, I probably won't do it, but if it's over the top awesome, I'll probably be compelled by the hand of God to do it.

Give me slow motion battles over shaky cam battles any day of the week

Both are over-and-incorrectly used techniques in most movies being made currently. Both CAN be used to great effect in the right circumstances, but most Hollywood filmmakers of today are just mercilessly abusing them in the name of "style".

I don't know what everyone are so excited about, I watched the five minutes clip and some other ones and I don't see anything special about it.

Yeah... I'm gonna have to put down "pass".

How do you consistently have the exact opposite opinion on everything as everyone else?

You're also a 9th grader. You're probably not sure why all of us find girls attractive, despite the overabundance of cooties.

While I'm hyped for this movie and all they just seem to use a LOT of slow-motion on the movie it's like a Baywatch movie only with men and boucing crotchs instead of boobies.

Well, so far I've made the right decision in not buying the graphic novel and reading it. I read all of the Sin City comics before the movie came out, and it took away a lot of the impact of that movie. So I'm holding off for 300...just wish it was coming to the IMAX here in Indy. :(

300 is currently sitting at 8/9 or 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here's a quote from an anonymous producer who saw it:
Hollywood Elsewhere said:
"I saw 300 tonight," a manager-producer friend wrote last week. "Empty and shallow but still cool. I did enjoy seeing as I love the Thermopylae story. More entertaining than I thought it would be, but nowhere near the film it could have been. Gladiator Lite, as in very. And it ain't Spartacus. Greek mythology done MTV-style. The blood looked more like Jackson Pollock than Goya. No emotional content. Lotsa splashing.

"The semi-naked men, rather than any real plot, kept me amused. Did men in Sparta always parade around half naked? A bit of fiction here. I've also never seen such a washboard stomach competition! Some trainers made a lot of dough on weight-lifting this year.

"The stylized comic book look was intriguing, but an exercise. Frankly it made it less sensual and subtle and clearly more graphic and superficial. The dialogue is redundant. Music felt like a Gladiator rip-off, and a couple of scenes felt totally lifted from Ridley Scott. I hope Ridley, not Frank Miller, is the future of filmmaking."
Source.

I'm still pretty psyched to see this - should be a lot of fun.

That review alone has 100 comments (the last time i checked anyway). I'm insanely psyched up to see this film - i just thought it was funny that the first bad review came from a female.

The testosterone in the audience is going to be rank.

Fanboys may embrace its wanton carnage, he-man heroics and bombastic dialogue, but 300 really belongs on a PlayStation rather than in a theatre.

Saw this last night in IMAX. Really well done beginning scene. It really sets the tone. The rest of the movie is "good" Nothing spectacular, but its a fun watch.
