The NPD Group has released its video game sales data for the April reporting period, revealing a 20 percent increase in total industry sales. The industry generated $838.6 million and year-to-date it's up 46 percent to $4.2 billion. Software sales were actually down 1 percent in April, totaling $389.8 million. Console software in particular was down 19 percent to $248.3 million. Offsetting that somewhat was a strong performance by portable software, which jumped 61 percent to $141.5 million. Meanwhile, game accessories were up 37 percent to $110.4 million.

It was hardware, however, driven by the Nintendo DS that helped push the industry in April. Hardware was up 56 percent to $338.4 million. Console hardware increased 56 percent to $239.4 million, while portable hardware grew 43 percent to $99 million.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicted PS3 sales in the U.S. for April would be around 100K. Unfortunately for Sony, they were even worse. PS3 sold a woeful 82,000 units for the month, while the Nintendo DS once again stole the show with 471K. PS3 sales were so low that Nintendo's ancient GBA sold more with 84K. The best selling console was Nintendo's Wii with 360K sold, while the Xbox 360 sold an unimpressive 174K. Sony's PS2 beat out the 360 (again) with 194K. The PSP sold 183K units and the GameCube (essentially on life support) sold just 13K.

Darn!
Two (2) people are going to be shaving tonight! (or be banned..hehehehe)...
-360 at under 200,000
-PS3 at under 100,000
-Wii at over 300,000

It's priced too high and there aren't very many must-have games yet, so 86K for the PS3 is understandable... but 174K for the 360? WTF? With it's software lineup it should be selling at least an extra 100K on top of that at this point, imho.

Ouch. PS3 is bad but 360 is not a lot better. I guess MS will keep playing blindman to reality. In a year's time, MS will realize that devs can only back one or two guys. A good chunk will just focus on Wii. And if Nintendo shoots out to 25 million quick, GTA5 will lead on Wii.

No balls shaving for me, as 360 < 200k and PS3 less than 100k.

However, Wii isn't less than 300k, so armpit hair has to go.

Won the ban bet though, whoo!

Even more eyebrow-raising was the DS, although we seem to be repeating ourselves every month. "I'd like to say that I'm not surprised by anything anymore, but that would be a lie! Yes, the DS's performance is truly amazing, and it has earned a spot among the premier gaming systems in use today," she said. "No longer is portable gaming something for kids or for travel - it's clear gamers are responding to the system and the content available for it, and choosing it often as a gaming platform."

Seems that somebody finally took portable gaming out of the ghetto...

I honestly think the Elite will do more harm than good. The default price tag for a 360 now looks like $470 instead of $399.
