ESRB gives game mature rating on PS2, PSP and Wii

Rockstar has finally received some good news over Manhunt 2: the game has been cleared for an October release in the US.

American ratings board the ESRB has granted the game an ‘M’ classification – which allows sale to consumers of 17 years and older – after Rockstar submitted a modified version of the title.

In June, Rockstar parent Take 2 was forced to suspend the release of the horror title when the ESRB issued an Adults Only rating.

"Manhunt 2 is important to us, and we're glad it can finally be appreciated as a gaming experience," said founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games Sam Houser.

October, eh? Just in time for the holiday season. How convenient.

I wonder how much they had to cut, if anything.
Instead of wielding a giant hatchet and butchering people, your character now wields... A HERRING!

will release Manhunt 2 for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, and the Wii™ home video game system from Nintendo in North America on October 31, 2007. This announcement follows the submission of a modified version of Manhunt 2 to the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), who has now rated the title "M" for Mature for ages 17 and older.

I'm not buying until I know what was cut and how it affected the game. (Hopefully not much).

But seriously, i would love to know what they changed as well
They'll likely never release what was cut in order to reduce the "Damn, I'm not buying/enjoying this since they took this out" aspect

I want to know what the M rating is for now

It better cover the full gauntlet of what constitutes an M rating.

BTW: the zombie thing, they did that to the third Carmageddon game

Why not release an unedited AO version and also the cut M version?

The latter gives them sales, the former means they don't sacrifice their "artistic integrity".

Yes, this will never happen.

Unless they release the AO version on the PC, will never happen because neither Sony nor Nintendo will press the discs, nor will they allow AO discs to be bootable

Regarding a potential AO PC version: Who knows? It's never happened before, to my knowledge, and who knows what contracts Take 2 signed to get the game on the consoles.

October is actually earlier than I thought this game would see the light of day. It's so strange to see good news associated with Rockstar these days.

We shall do no such thing.

Yep, zero interest for me now too. Too bad.
Hmm. I'm still interested. Any word on if the PS2 version supports the mic headset? (fence tipping question).

October is perfect. Just in time for Halloween. The first Manhunt was one of the last genuinely scary games ever released, IMO

Is it me, or was that process really quick?

Did Rockstar have a toned-down version waiting for this situation, ready to meanwhile bask in the media spotlight? /tinfoilhat

Anyways.. I'll be honest.. if the gameplay fundamentals are good, I'll still cave and buy it.

unfortunately nintendo and sony won't let AO games on their system.

we all know the Wii version was the lead of this game and that the motion controls were a big selling point.

even if we get an AO release on PC down the line, we still won't be able to play the uncut version as was intended: with a wiimote and nunchuck.

The M rating allows "STRONG sexual content" though I have no idea what that means since it obviously doesn't mean non-graphic sex in the eyes of the ESRB. GTA:SA had this descriptor BEFORE hot coffee was discovered though I don't know why.

"Graphic sexual content" is porno and it's highly unlikely that Manhunt 2 was or had porno.

If you're so anti-Wii, why not get the PS2 or PSP versions?
I don't think I could justify not getting the Wii version in the long run myself, if I were to take an objective standpoint. If I am going to play a game like this, I might as well dive head first.

My only concern is that this game will still be too realistic with the Wii console, and it will feel like I am really murdering people even more than Godfather did.

The only way we're likely going to know what they cut is from the people that did get to play through and review it. Some magazines reviewed it already so they could do that.

see that's one of the things that really interested me about the title.

i wanted to know if it would make me feel guilty about killing people.

the only other game i played that made me feel guilty about doing stuff was postal 2... and i think that there's a strong argument to be made that by forcing the player to commit violence and then making that violence so real as to make the person feel bad about committing that violence, is probably less damaging to a person than making killing accessible and fun.

The time where I would buy this game has long passed.

My thoughts exactly. Now it's going to be released right in the middle of glorious game releases. Bargain bin, perhaps.

People will line up to buy it, just to know what the fuss was all about and to get the answer to the above question.

Genius, Rockstar.
how will we know what the fuss was about from a version that removed the stuff that caused the fuss?

as i've always said. this whole thing has only made me want to play the version of the game *that i can't*. nothing more nothing less... and judging from this thread i'm not the only one.

About the same time it takes ubisoft to make a PS2 game into a Wii Waggle Experience.

As a comparison, I know there's an AO US PC version of Indigo Prophecy available via download only. It contains a nude sex scene near the end that was removed from the US version.

zero.

such a goddamn shame.
IMHO, this was preferable to appealing the AO, winning, and destroying the ESRB's credibility amongst the Parents Television Council crowd. Besides, R* can release an uncut PC version for digital download. I'd be supportive of that.

Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude also had an AO version for download.

R* certainly has a precedent for doing this...

The ESRB having credibility with the PTC is like not having any credibility at all.

If the ESRB is going to treat games like kiddie toys and 17-year-olds like babies then they need to GTFO.

i'm sure they will follow suit, but for me the Wii controls were one of the major selling points. i didn't like The Godfather at all until i played it on the wii, and then i loved it... and i know the Wii version has been the lead all along and the game was designed for motion controls first and pads second.

I guess this goes back to Nintendo expanding their audience. If they want parents to buy into this stuff, the last thing they need to hear is that the ratings system is a paper tiger. Of course, adults should have their fun too- hell, I like Bioshock- but for people to buy into this stuff, they need to have confidence in the ratings system. It would also help if the AO didn't have that "kiss of death" stigma, but hey what can you do?
