Dreamcast Zip Drive - $10,000

The only working version in the world:

"The Zip Drive extension box was designed for the Sega Dreamcast. There is a physical connection that joins the setup game console with the extension box. This was the only prototype in the world. It never made it to manufacturing since Sega had cancelled their hardware gaming console business plans The original purpose of the extension box was to save game scores to the Zip media and load additional players characters into the Dreamcast games. This is a rare collectible item for the serious gamer connoisseur."

I remember there were so many awesome Dreamcast add-ons proposed.

* Zip drive
* Ethernet/High speed modem
* MP3 playing VMU

Where did it all go wrong? :(

Hey, didnt the Zipdrive come with the ethernet add-on?

Yeah, it's nice and certainly rare.

...but a minimum bid of $10,000 fucking dollars?!?!

It doesn't even do anything. Overpriced much?

if I could spend $10,000 on something SEGA, I'd buy my choice of Sega arcade game, not the Dreamcast Zip Drive even if it's one-of-a-kind.

I've got a Dreamcast BBA.

it's a must if you want to use Plantweb Browser 3.0 with pJava support.

it was kinda cool to be able to use Java-based chatrooms (like the old Yahoo chat) and play Java-based games.

No way that'll sell unless it's a joke bid.

Q: Interesting item. Quick questions: Does it actually work (and what does it do)? How did you end up with it? Thanks! Sep-12-07
A: The drive works electrically, loads, locks, and unloads the disk. There are no games that it works with since the games would have to load some kind of drivers. Notice there is a Dreamcast Zip disk with it.

$10K? Get real. If he were smart, he would have put a pretty high reserve and a $10K buy-it-now - that would get the same amount of hits it has (it's up over 5,000 right now) and a bunch of potential buyers bidding. Even if it didn't match his reserve he'd at least have people he could offer it to.

It's pretty damn neat, but not $10,000 neat.

I suppose if it is the only one left in the world, then perhaps it's worth it.

Seems a little weird to me, if it is seriously one of a kind why would you sell it on ebay? they crush you on fees plus you have like 10 kids BIN and not pay...

jobber

Would let Tony Parker sleep with his wife
if you're smart...you could've networked your DC to your PC and save your shit to your computer but that's too much work :\

Iomega and Sega Collaborate On Breakthrough Gaming Device; New Dreamcast-Based
Product Enhances Iomega's Beyond PC Initiative

ROY, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1999
--Iomega Corporation (NYSE: IOM)
today announced that Iomega and Sega have signed a non-binding letter of intent
to include Iomega's popular Zip(R) 100MB drive in a new collaborative product
that will be designed to attach to Sega's Dreamcast system.

The new product will also be designed to dramatically increase the
capabilities of not only game playing, but Web-based activities such as content
saving of e-mail and Web searches. In addition, Sega intends to sell private
label Dreamcast Zip 100MB disks, offering both the device and disks in
game-oriented channels.

The collaborative product is expected to be offered as an option to Sega
Dreamcast customers in the third quarter of 1999. Dreamcast began shipping
November 27, 1998 in Japan and is expected to begin shipping in the U.S. and in
Europe during the third quarter of 1999.

Dreamcast is one of the most powerful game systems on the market today.
Through a 128-bit architecture, offering high-speed processing capability, 26MB
of RAM, 64 channels of sound, breakthrough graphics, superb 3D rendering, a 1
Gigabyte GD-ROM, and a modem for Internet gaming, Web access, and e-mail,
Dreamcast has distinguished itself as a benchmark gaming system.

Via Zip(R) Built-In(TM), this new product will be designed to make
Dreamcast the first gaming system versatile enough to bring world-class game
playing, Web browsing and e-mail together in an integrated system. It will also
be designed to allow users to download game updates from the Web to Zip(R)
disks. The system will be designed to work independently or in conjunction with
Dreamcast games.

"We are seeing a major revolution in consumer electronics from analog to
digital," said Sean Kaldor, vice president, Emerging Market

& Technology Research, International Data Corporation. "As consumers demand
lower cost and easier-to-use solutions, digital technologies will open the door
to a much wider range of new functions. One of the fastest developing areas is
gaming consoles, in which interchangeable storage has a pivotal role."

"Iomega is changing the home game system market with this new device,"
said Mike Lynch, director of Beyond PC, Iomega Corporation. "The broad
familiarity of Zip drives with consumers, and our large installed base make Zip
drives the perfect removable solution for beyond-PC products, such as Sega's
Dreamcast game console."

"Dreamcast represents a whole new way of thinking at Sega," said Corporate
Senior Vice President of Sega Enterprises, Ltd., Hideki Sato. "We will be able
to enhance the potential of Dreamcast further due to the architectural
partnership between Iomega and Sega."

Dreamcast collectors are more insane than NeoGeo collectors. Anyone who doesn't truly know what that means shouldn't be posting in this thread.

zip drives were the shit.

QFT

we instantly went back to tape drives after our zip drive started to develop a serious appetite for magnetic tape, and ate our zip discs, but not only that once a disc had been chomped it was like fucking Rabies, when you put the disc in another drive it would suddenly catch the disease and fuck any zip discs that entered its purple death hole of a mouth.

Some people will spend so much money on this which is practically useless now.

Practically useless? Try completely. I can see why someone would want it, but $10 grand?! That shit aint gonna sell.

Broadband modem did release. It's a bitch to find now.

Sure did release. I used to have a lot of fun playing Quake Arena III online. Good times.

I'd love to have the zip drive. Not for ten grand, but still.
