Here we list PAL Wii games that support Progressive Scan

I've only recently bought a Wii and thought it would be helpful to PAL gamers if GAF could come up with a list of games that support Progressive Scan. In other words, here we list games capable of being displayed at 480p on a PAL Wii console hooked up via Component.

It should be noted that having a game restricted to displaying in 480i or 576i should not necessarily deter you from buying said game. On a SDTV, i.e. most CRT television sets, you won't even notice the difference. This list is mainly for PAL gamers who have their Wii's hooked up to HDTV's. In these circumstances, PAL games will look marginally better being viewed at 480p as opposed to 480i or 576i.

Games that support 480p have an icon on the back of the box that reads "EDTV/HDTV compatible". A few early games offer 480p but do not display the icon, e.g. Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Any help with expanding and/or correcting these lists would be appreciated!

You need to list whether it has a 16:9 mode too, in PAL last the two can be mutually exclusive.

Okami Wii and Fire Emblem 10 (English-language version) have been announced to support 16:9 and 480p, but clearly we should wait for the European releases before adding them to any of these lists.

Sonic and the secret Rings has also a progressive scan mode.

Thanks, that's awesome to hear! I'm getting it in the mail this week. :D

We still need to work on the following.

EDIT: Widescreen lists moved to post #1.

Cool, I've updated the list.

I thought that Mario Party 8 was a 480p game, even though it doesn't support widescreen.

NTSC version supports 480i/60 and 480p/60. PAL version is 576i/50 only.

It comes out in a few weeks, so I guess we'll know soon enough.

I would hate to derail the thread and if this question is not appropiate here please tell me; it's kind of related to the topic...

Shortly after the Wii launch, I remember strong discussions (not in Gaf) about if some PAL games which support progressive scan where for some reason "not really progressive" (whatever that means). Twilight Princess was the main topic in those discussions.

Does anyone know if there was some kind of consensus abot this? real issue or bs?
Have there been similiar issues/discussions with other games after TP?

It must be bs since tvs shows 480p on them.

I don't know the exact details, but apparently there is some or other quick and dirty programming trick to get a game to display in progressive scan mode when it was originally programmed to run in interlaced mode only. It has something to do with deinterlacing the interlaced image before it is displayed, as opposed to displaying a strictly progressive (i.e. once off) image. You end up with 480p either way though.

Also, I highly doubt Nintendo would use this technique on their own titles, and certainly not Twilight Princess as it runs in progressive scan on Gamecube (NTSC) and Wii (NTSC and PAL), so you have to consider that true progressive scan was meant to be included from the start, as it was with Wind Waker (NTSC).

Fellow GAFfers like M3d10n, wellsed or fernoca know more about the subject than I do, I'm sure.

I've been making regular updates, so I reckon this thread deserves a bump.

PAL gamers please check the lists in the original post, and see if you can add any new information as regards your games' progressive scan and widescreen status.

all the games I have you've already listed, I suggest you remove the /60 though since the way you've worded seems that, for example, Kororimpa does not support the 60Hz switch which is not the case (I know you don't mean that, I hope I made myself clear).

Also, you could add which games have a letterbox mode when not supporting proper anamorphic widescreen (again, like Kororimpa and some some others do).

RE: Umbrella Chronicles: 480p Widescreen

Geometry Wars Galaxies: 480p Widescreen

Also, doesn't Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 have widescreen as well? Bear in mind I'm not sure, it definitely has 480p though.

If anyone has any games to add to the pro-scan or widescreen listings, please let me know.

I picked up Dragon Quest Swords yesterday. The game supports 480p and 16:9. Also, it's huge fun! :D I'll recommend it if you're looking for a straight and simple, light RPG to complement the heavier RPGs currently out on Wii.

Thanks for the big update! :D

I'm not sure if I should add WiiWare titles to the list. I don't have Bubble Bobble Plus, but I did recently buy Adventure Island: The Beginning, and it genuinely is the very first game I've encountered on WiiWare that doesn't run in 480p and 16:9.

It sucks about PAL Madworld. I havn't picked it up yet (used my gaming budget buying a bunch of N64 titles off a friend instead), and probably won't for at least the near future.

Rogue Trooper will be my next purchase, and I'm rather looking forward to it too!

Also yeah, imagine my face when the long awaited Bubble Bobble Plus showed up in 4:3 and 480i :-/ It also sucks really hard that the game is just scaled to 480i from a 720p render, resulting in a messy jagginess where you can't even properly make out the faces of Bub and Bob :-/ Proof enough is the fact that Bubble Bubble remake for XBLA is the same exact game with the same exact graphics only this time displayed at the native 720p, so everything's crystal clear... damn lazy Taito-Square Enix! -__-

Yep, Rogue T's neat. also 480p and WS. :D

This thread is useful, I'll post my findings every once in a while I got some new games you might be missing on the list.
