FIRST AND FINAL WARNING:
I hope you image freaks get the baiting out of your system in this thread, because once that Toshiba capitulation press release goes up, I'm locking this up and treating all BR bait images like Evilore treats Shawn Michaels .gifs outside of the wrestling threads. I'm as pleased as anyone to have this war over with and HD-DVD's head on a stake, but you'll have your pound of flesh here and nowhere else.

Have fun and see you in the morning.

Our official thread is about to be locked, so if you guys wanna keep talking about it....

Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses

19 February, 2008

Company Remains Focused on Championing Consumer Access to High Definition Content

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.

Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.

This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.

Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

Universal's Statement:

"The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def’s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate. While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray."

Paramount's statement:

"We are pleased that the industry is moving to a single high-definition format, as we believe it is in the best interest of the consumer," the statement reads. "As we look to (begin) releasing our titles on Blu-ray, we will monitor consumer adoption and determine our release plans accordingly."

It's over!

I'm most interested in what Paramount and Universal are going to do.

I would like Transformers and Bourne in BD.

Yeah, I hope they have press releases in the morning(u.s. based companies closed for the night). Most likely they will happen in the morning. :)

Rumor is that Transformers and other Paramount titles released within a couple of months of their announcement were already manufactured and ready to ship, so we could see them showing up in stores within days.

Well, if the stories are true, Toshiba had probably given them atleast a month's advance notice to start preparing...so they could already be pressing discs again I guess.

I would imagine a release like Transformers they just wouldn't push out on shelves. Would want to do marketing and do atleast a 2 or 3 month ahead date. Maybe some of their older catalog stuff that was already sitting in factories...

yeah, I was just about to post something about that. added to op... don't want to see people getting banned.

just read at Kotaku, that Gamestop is getting ready (if they haven't already) to no longer continue excepting HD-DVDs/360 player as trade-ins

Might try putting your hd-dvd players on ebay and not mentioning hd-dvd. Just try to sell them as upconverting dvd players...

all that he wants is another baby
Theory time: If I paid for a 4-year warranty on my HD-DVD player which, all of the sudden, decides to start freezing up while playing certain discs (BSG: Season 1 is pretty notorious for this), what can I do?

I'm hoping you'll say, "Get a credit for the money you paid for it and get yourself another PS3 for the bedroom," or something. :D

I'm thinking that is a very real possibility ;)

Just unplug it in the middle of a firmware update. Will never get past the welcome screen next boot up:D

Toshiba will lick their wounds for a bit and join Blu Ray. It makes no financial sense to deny themselves a potential goldmine especially when they own a half share in a company that just happens to make blu ray drives. I think they will have a rebadged Samsung player out for Christmas and their own in-house models after that.

I thought the board meeting was just today? That was a quick turnaround to an announcement. I guess they figured they had to say something ASAP.

Anyway, it is GREAT that the format war is finally over. Paramount and Universal, come out of the shadows please!

Wonderful, I can finally experience BR on my SD television.

This news is irrelevant to me, for the time being.

so hd-dvd finally dies, and we're supposed to have a calm coffee table discussion about it? BOOOOURNS!!! come on, this kinda stuff is what keeps neogaf alive.

Of course, I did the dumbass thing of pulling the trigger on the Zodiac Director's Cut HD-DVD. I'm debating whether to even open it and have it live with my meager REDCOLLECTION or return it and wait for a BLUERELEASE...

So, when are we going to see the first Toshiba blu-ray player?

The ink is only just dry on their decision to abandon HD-DVD. So..I'd say it'll take a little while for them to hop on the BD train.

I'd say Microsoft must be pissed. No doubt they saw this war being drawn out much longer, to their benefit.

I knew HD was a fad.

Sony will announce discontinuation of Blu-ray by the end of the year. Good riddance, I say.

In the podcast Jeff Gerstmann and Ryan Davis did, Ryan mentioned that he was being told that MS really was going to put an internal HDDVD drive in the 360 before it was revealed that WB was going exclusive to BR. So yeah it does seem like they wanted to drag it out as long as they could.

yeah for me and my USA ps3. I've got 30+ blurays and was contemplating a HD-dvd player only 1-2 weeks ago because of the amazon sale. Thank god I held on tight!
