Xbox 360 Console Now Offers Triple the Storage

Published July 13, 2008

Redmond, Washington—Microsoft is giving consumers more gigabytes for their buck. The company today announced an Xbox 360® console with triple the storage space of the original console, but for the same price of $349 (U.S.) estimated retail price.

Available in retail stores in the U.S. and Canada starting in early August, the upgraded Xbox 360 will include a 60GB hard drive for storing the growing wealth of digital entertainment available for the console, including music, movies, television shows, and game content. In addition, Microsoft today dropped the price of its 20GB Xbox 360 console in the U.S. and Canada to just $299 (U.S.) (ERP) while supplies last, a savings of $50.

"We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we're giving it to them at no extra charge," said Albert Penello, Xbox director of product management at Microsoft. "No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you'll have three times the storage to manage all that great content."

Xbox 360 is just one of three Xbox 360 gaming and entertainment systems Microsoft offers. Microsoft's Xbox 360 Arcade, which comes with a 256MB memory unit and five Xbox LIVE Arcade games, is a value for the whole family for $279 (U.S.) (ERP), and the premium Xbox 360 Elite console is available with a 120GB hard drive for $449 (U.S.) (ERP).

Out of the box, the Xbox 360 console is ready to provide an incredible gaming and entertainment experience:

* Xbox 360 console: The console is equipped with a cool white finish and three powerful core processors capable of producing the best in high definition (HD) entertainment (up to 1080p for gaming), 16:9 cinematic aspect ratio, anti-aliasing for smooth textures, full surround sound, and high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) output.
* 60GB Hard Drive: The 60GB detachable hard drive allows you to save your games and store television shows, movies, music, pictures, trailers, levels, demos, and other content available from Xbox LIVE Marketplace, the premier one-stop digital download center for entertainment.

* Upscaling DVD Player: With an HDMI cable (sold separately), watch your favorite DVDs in near high-definition using the upscaling capabilities of Xbox 360.
* Xbox 360 Wireless Controller: This award-winning, high-performance wireless controller features the Xbox Guide Button for quick, in-game access to friends and music. It has a range of up to 30 feet and a battery life of up to 30 hours on two AA batteries.
* Xbox 360 Headset: The headset lets friends and family around the world chat while playing games, watching movies, or sending voice messages on Xbox LIVE.
* Xbox LIVE Silver Membership: For no additional cost, Xbox 360 owners can chat with friends online, collect Achievements to improve their Gamerscores, send and receive voice and text messages, and access Xbox LIVE Marketplace content such as game demos, and purchase or rent HD movies and TV shows, as well as the best in downloadable games from Xbox LIVE Arcade. (Broadband Internet access required.)
* One-month subscription to Xbox LIVE Gold: An Xbox LIVE Gold Membership provides a complete online entertainment experience. Those who subscribe to this premium service can engage in competitive online multiplayer matches, tailor their matchmaking via feedback and accomplishments, and chat with an entire group of friends at a time.

What's the bloody point of the Arcade skew now? Geez.

NOOOOOO

That's too many SKUs and the tard pack is only 20 bucks cheaper than the 20? That makes even more tarded. they should have made it at most 250 and tried to position it against the wii.

4 skus? God dammit. My brain hurts trying to figure that out.
Especially when it's a $20 difference for the Arcade.

They should just drop arcade and make 20gig the new arcade. Make cheap hdd so people that have core and want to play a game that's built around HDD only can get one cheap. Also allow them to lighten the restriction of XBLA games.

The press release says they 60 gig is replacing the 20 gig ("triple the storage for the same price").

The $299 price for the 20 gig is simply a way to clear inventory ("while supplies last").

Why would anyone want to buy an Elite now? The jump from 20 to 120 might have justified it, but from 60 to 120? 60 is plenty.

I'm guessing they'll drop the price on the 60GB down to $299 when the 20GB is out-of-stock, similar to what Sony did with the $499 60GB and $599 80GB Motorstorm bundle.

So it's a fake price drop then? I guess Sony won't feel any pressure to drop the price after all.

Both companies are looking for profit right now. And, realistically, I doubt Microsoft would go lower than the Wii....and we all know the Wii ain't budging its price anytime soon.

I'm afraid we're stuck at these prices probably for at least another year.

My theory:
20GB drops to $300 to clear out stock, Arcade and Elite unaffected
60GB Pro unveiled at E3, price $350, in-stores July 27th
All the 20GBs gone by Fall, then the Core, 60GB Pro, and Elite see price drops

Looks like Master Ninja called it. I don't think the larger HD is going to help that much, unless they drop the price on the add-on HD to something less than $rape.

Why didnt they just ditch the 20 and replace it with the 60? Good lord MS, what are you doing.

There's probably a lotttttttt of 20s out there that need to sell still.

Why does an upgrade from 20gb to 120gb cost $150?
Because rather than use "at cost" math, they use "BestBuy" math where in magical land, HDMI cables cost more than $2.50 and adding an enclosure to a standard sata drive costs $80.

How long do you guys think the 20gb units are going to be in stock? I'm planning on getting one, but i just want to be careful.

I don't think you understand the point of the Elite. It's not for everyone. It's for people who plan on downloading a lot of HD content.

And for people who download a ton of Rock Band songs, along with HD content, demos, etc. the Elite is plenty justified. It's just not for you.

I'm getting one when the price drops though.

There's no such thing as a "fake price drop".

The 20 GB 360 is dropping in price. That's not "fake". It's happening. It's still a price drop. It just won't be around after supplies are gone.

That's such fucking bullshit. The system with a hard drive at this point should be 300 and no more for awhile, not just for clearance.

But who would buy an Arcade 360 now? I just don't get it... If the 20GB is going to be replaced by the 60GB, I can understand, but otherwise...

EDIT: 20 GB is indeed going to be replaced. I get it now:p.

Those 20GB HDs have to be seeing a price drop too, due to sheer supply and demand. Getting an Arcade would be incredibly stupid right now.

I would suspect once the 20gig is sold out there will be a price cut across all the Sku's possibly in October?

Sony did the same thing didn't they? People get used to the Price being $299 so wont except the base model going back up in price.

So basically this is not a price cut. It's a clearance on a discontinued item.

Price cut will probably come in the fall.

So the rumors were true? Seeing that US is by far the strongest market for 360 it sort of makes sense to wait on a price drop all across the board (like they did in Europe) and just add more value to the Premium, but I think they're missing an opportunity if they don't do a "proper" price drop this year. They've been investing such a lot of money in the X-Box venture up until now - it should be in the cards.

So they have now more SKU's than PS3? PS3 has/had 20,40,60 and 80, while 360 has/had Arcade, Core, 20, 60 and 120. Crazy!

While there is a VERY SMALL CHANCE of a 20/60 still being on a store shelf somewhere, MS now has more SKUs on the market that Sony has had total

Yup, I think this is just setting up for a bigger price drop for the holiday season.

Gets the 20GB out the door, 60GB should be where it's at. That seems like it's a sweet spot between gaming and the video marketplace (unless you're a HUGE video marketplace junkie).

Wait a minute. Is this true for all types of cables, like Component?

Well, analog cables are much more susceptible to interference, which is why truly crazy people reduce cable bundling and crossing as much as possible, but with digital cables, it's virtually unheard of. There's no need for it.
