Generally, the spring anime season can be relied upon to provide some quality programming after the doldrums of the winter season. So, after three months of generally dull cartoons, we've got a lot to look forward to, right? Well, maybe not so much.

Thanks to the Fansub Wiki for providing this listing. They also provide air dates and a listing of who's subbing which series so far. Let's see what they've got for us:

01-candy-boy.jpg

Candy Boy Episode 6 - For a show about two lesbians, you'd think this would be a lot more interesting than it actually is.

02-isekai-no-seikishi-monogatari.jpg

Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari - An OVA spin-off of Tenchi Muyo? Why won't they just let it die already?

03-kiniro-no-corda.jpg

Kiniro no Corda: Second Passo - Oh God, They're All So Pretty, round one.

04-lupin-conan.jpg

Lupin III vs. Detective Boy Conan - Two of the biggest names in anime come together for a special that'll likely pleasant but not terribly exciting. It'll also have higher ratings than anything else listed here, with one possible exception.

05-marie-and-gali.jpg

Marie and Gali - From the looks of this I was expecting some sort of absurd comedy about a slacker and a loligoth, but instead it looks to be a series of educational shorts about a slacker and a loligoth.

06-mainichi-kaa-san.jpg

Mainichi Kaa-san - Slice of life comedy based on a popular gag comic.

07-charade-no-joke.jpg

Charady no Joke na Mainichi - My gut response is still "fuck knows", but I've figured out what this is. Apparently it's going to be a daily short with the animation being done by the students of Kyoto University of Art and Design's Department of Character Design. The nekkid woman there is supposed to be a graduate of that department who loves jokes, so each episode will be her telling jokes from around the world. That's actually pretty cool; here's hoping someone tries to fansub it.

08-queens-blade.jpg

Queen's Blade - Anyone here remember Lost Worlds? It was a series of fighting game books put out by Flying Buffalo, where each book was dedicated to a warrior of some sort (say an animated skeleton or a lizardman), the pages contained the warrior's combat moves, and you and a friend would fight each other with them. For the most part Lost Worlds had been quietly forgotten, until Hobby Japan licensed the series, made the warriors busty women falling out of their armor, and suddenly found themselves with an otaku hit on their hands. This is the inevitable anime adaptation. It's a very strange world we live in.

09-phantom.jpg

Phantom: Requiem of the Phantom - The title's a bit redundant, but I suppose it'll do. This is the sequel to an OVA series from a few years ago that I never saw and it's apparently about - get this - a secret organization, it's brainwashed assassins, the teenage girl who, naturally, is their best assassin, their war against the American mafia, and the poor bastard who winds up caught up in all this. Oh, and it's from the director who gave us Captain Tylor and nothing else of note since.

10-hayate-no-gotoku2.jpg

Hayate no Gotoku Series 2 - More wacky combat butler hijinx the way you like it.

11-mechamote.jpg

Gokujo! Mecha Mote Iinchou - Roughly translated as "The Best! Extremely Cool Student Council President", it's about said cool president, three guys who are annoying her in a romantic sort of way, and the rest of humanity being compelled to rise up and destroy her as an affront to nature. Okay, so that last part's just me, but, my god, just look at those eyes. It's like they're trying to suck out your soul.

12-metal-fight-beyblade.jpg

Metal Fight Beyblade - More wacky top fighting hijinx the way you like it.

13-dragonball-kai.jpg

Dragon Ball Kai - Before everyone gets excited, this isn't a new series. Instead, Toei is taking Dragon Ball Z, remastering it in HD, editing it down to follow the manga more closely (and presumably throwing out great hunks of godawful filler in the process), and doing a bit of digital touching up.

14-jewel-pets.jpg

Jewel Pets - Sanrio Rules The Hearts and Minds of Young Girls With an Iron Fist, round one.

15-full-metal-alchemist2.jpg

Fullmetal Alchemist - I'm not sure if this is a remake, a sequel, or what, but it's going to be the absolute most popular show this season.

16-konichiwa-anne.jpg

Konichiwa, Anne: Before Green Gables - Yes, it's the Anne of Green Gables prequel series that you've all been waiting for.

17-hanasakuru-seishounen.jpg

Hanasakuru Seishounen - Oh God, They're All So Pretty, round two.

18-guin-saga.jpg

Guin Saga - My understanding is that the Guin Saga novels have been around since the late 70s, telling a sprawling, fantasy tale of a man in a leopard mask who protects his homeland from evil. Apparently the series is up to 124 novels now, all written by a single man, and the saga has a dedicated fan base. I suppose it shouldn't come as a surprise that it was eventually adapted into manga and, now, an animated series. By the way, for anyone curious about the novels or the manga, they're both available in English from Vertical.

19-tayutama.jpg

Tayutama: Kiss on my Diety - This roughly translates as "Moe Crap: Kiss My Ass". Well, at least it does for me. Naturally, Tayutama is based on a porn game.

20-natsu-no-arashi.jpg

Natsu no Arashi - From the creator of School Rumble, here we have a series about a boy on summer vacation who encounters a mysterious young woman at an old coffee shop, at which point it's time for wacky hijinx.

21-tears-to-tiara.jpg

Tears to Tiara - More worthless moe crap. I suppose this deserves some credit for being adapted from a porn strategy RPG rather than your usual porn visual novel, but not that much credit.

22-saki.jpg

Saki - It's about a shy high school freshman who has never enjoyed mahjong, but who finds herself joining the school mahjong club and starting to play on the competitive circuit. So, it's like a moe version of Akagi, except lame.

23-07-ghost.jpg

07 Ghost - The ANN entry provides a rambling explanation that I can't really be bothered to follow, but it appears to be about an orphan with a mysterious past become a top student in his military academy, going on the lam, and finding himself in a church protected by seven ghosts. At that point things get a bit fuzzy, but I'm sure it involves lots of beautiful men and the creator's uniform fetish.

24-souten-kouro.jpg

Souten Kouro - The image there isn't much to go on, but this has a lot of potential. It's based on a seinen manga adaptation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms that won the Kondansha Manga Prize in 1998 and is being animated by some folks with plenty of old school cred.

25-ristorante-paradiso.jpg

Ristorante Paradiso - A young woman in Italy winds up working at a small restaurant owned by her mother's new husband, in this adaptation from the director of Gundam 0083. This sounds like a completely awesome combination to me.

26-eden-of-the-east.jpg

Eden of the East - Okay, now this has some serious promise. It's an original story from the director of GitS: Stand Alone Complex and Moribito with character designs from the Honey and Clover mangaka. The plot involves a bizzare terrorist attack on Japan featuring missles that don't appear to do anything, a Japanese woman visiting America who gets into deep trouble in front of the White House, and the amnesiac guy who rescues her who shows up naked, armed with a handgun, and toting a phone with 8 billion yen in digital cash on it. I'm stoked.

27-hatsukoi-gentei.jpg

Hatsukoi Limited - While this looks like it's based on a porn game, it's actually based on a Shonen Jump title from the creator of Ichigo 100%, so I suppose that's the next best thing. The manga is a series of romantic vigenttes about junior high school girls. God, I feel dirty just typing that.

28-sugar-bunnies-fleur.jpg

Sugar Bunnies Fleur - Sanrio Rules the Hearts and Minds of Young Girls, round two.

Continued next post.

29-polyphonica-crimson-s.jpg

Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica Crimson S - I don't know that this visual novel series (and, for once, that apparently doesn't mean porn games) needed one anime adaptation, let alone this sequel, but there it is.

30-basquash.jpg

Basquash - An increasingly insane Shoji Kawamori collaborates with Thomas "Oban Star Racers" Romain to provide the concept, if not the direction, for this show about playing basketball with giant robots. Can't argue with that.

31-sengoku-basara.jpg

Sengoku Basara - In Unexpected Video Game adaptations, round one, we have Production IG adapting Capcom's Warring States era video game Devil Kings.

32-pandora-hearts.jpg

Pandora Hearts - This is based on a fantasy series running in Squenix's manga rag. It's about a young duke who's imprisoned at his coming of age ceremony, freed by Alice the Black Rabbit (presumably the girl on the left there), and recruited by a mysterious organization known as Pandora. That doesn't sound very exciting to me, either. It's being directed by the guy who bought you all of the Rockman.EXE cartoons. Oh, and he did To-Love-Ru! Yeah, like I said, not excited.

33-k-on.jpg

K-ON! - This is based on a gag manga series about four cute girls with no musical experience trying to revive their school's music club. I imagine it's all awfully moe. In other news, the mangaka, kakifly, has the worst pen name ever.

34-valkyria-chronicles.jpg

Valkyria Chronicles - Unexpected Video Game Adaptations, round two, from the folks who gave us Ookiku Furikabutte.

35-asura-crying.jpg

Asura Cryin' - Based on a series of light novels, it's an action comedy series about a guy who's haunted by the ghost of a childhood friend.

36-mazinger-z-hen.jpg

Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen - Oh shit! Yasuhiro "Giant Robo, G Gundam" Imagawa is doing a remake of Mazinger Z! Please, please be awesome.

37-chi-season-2.jpg

Chi's Sweet Home Season 2 - More wacky cute cat hijinx the way you like it.

38-shangri-la.jpg

Shangri-La - First things first, I should mention that this is a GONZO show, with all that entails. But, the source material - a SF novel about near future Tokyo, turned tropical due to the effects of global warming, undergoing a mass forestation project, which is being opposed by anti-government guerrillas - has promise and the creative staff is competent if not overly inspired, so I'm hoping it's by Good GONZO and not Bad GONZO. Oh, and Range Murata's doing the character designs.

39-cross-game.jpg

Cross Game - When you're working with a Mitsuru Adachi comic about baseball and romance, you really can't go wrong. In this case it's about a young man who's a brilliant hitter thanks to his relationship with the four-daughter family who runs the local batting cages. As he begins high school, he's signing up with the baseball team, despite knowing nothing else about the rest of the sport. I'm sold.

40-juden-chan.jpg

Fight Ippatsu! Juden-chan! - From the creator of Mahoromatic, this is a SF comedy series about an office lady from another dimension who has come to our world to help cheer up the depressed. Cue wacky hijinx.

41-bakugan.jpg

Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia - Finally, a cartoon that I could have loved when I was eight years old gets a sequel series and grade school boys across the world rejoice.

I gotta say, this isn't exactly the most exciting season that comes to mind. I was ready to give up on it entirely until I hit the triple feature of Souten Kouro, Ristorante Paradiso, and Eden of the East, which are my top three picks of the season, along with Cross Game because, hey, it's Adachi. I've got high hopes for Mazinger Z-Hen (assuming Imagawa doesn't screw it up; he's had some bouts with the brain eater in recent years) and Shangri-La (assuming GONZO doesn't screw it up), Guin Saga could turn out to be interesting, and Natsu no Arashi and Fight Ippatsu! Juden-chan! could provide pleasantly wacky hijinx, so there's some potential there, too. Oh, and Valkyria Chronicles will probably turn out to be better than a video game adaptation really should, though I'm not overly interested in it. And, of course, Fullmetal Alchemist will be the big show this season, though as I never saw the original I'm not interested in it myself. So, I'm feeling more optimistic about the spring season than I was when I first started writing up this thread, but it's a cautious sort of optimism. We'll see.

Good, I wanted to stop watching too many shows at once. Only Full Metal Alchemist for me, although Mazzinger Z and Dragon Ball Kai sound interesting also thanks God I dropped Hayate so long ago. it really sucks. Thanks for the list :D

Lupin vs. Conan..? That seems interesting to say at least. I like them both so I'll definitely check it out even though I'm not expecting too much. :)

FMA will simply crush everything when it comes to ratings. Propably end up watching that too if it's not too similiar to the original.

man, i was waiting for mazinger to show up since it was featured in that winter shows mosaic. definitely lock.

a bunch of semi-interesting shows, but i'm gonna have to be selective.
saki - i've heard the characters rely on super powers, rather than strategy or cheating. maybe i'll get around to reading it, maybe
cross game - i've been meaning to read that as well, but i've put it off since it's ongoing and i like to read things in batches
dragonball z kai - a director's cut of dbz seems kinda enticing... the fight scenes were still kinda low rent though
sengoku basara - sengoku stylishly dressed up for the fangirls... maybe...

Wow, and I thought 2008 was a bad year for anime.

Well, it pretty much hinges on FMA and one or two wild cards (the GONZO show), for me.

Looking forward to:

Basquash [Oban was surprisingly good and Kawamori, while hit and miss, does know how to turn out some good stuff]
Eden of the East
Ristorante Paradiso
Fullmetal Alchemist 2
Candyboy episode 6 [it's mainly a show about nothing, but it's got two sisters that are lesbian lovers so I can't pass it up]

Omg new anime with characters designed by Range Murata is what I said to myself as I scrolled down.

FMA
DBZ
Cross-Game (Adachi can do no wrong!)
Shangri-La (until it eventually turns to Gonzo shit)

From what I've read of the manga, that isn't really the case... The main character is just really good. I don't think its exactly good to read for people who don't really know about mahjong though.

FYI, Fnord, Fullmetal Alchemist is supposedly an adaptation of the manga storyline. So, a "remake" I guess.

that's what my friend tells me. he has read the jp version. or maybe chinese. may be prone to exaggeration. says one of the characters has the ability to
self-draw win off the last tile. and does it 5 times in a row at a tournament.
if that aint a super power, i don't know what it is. even extremely good luck is a super power (see akagi/kaiji old men). i haven't gotten around to reading it myself. the scans started up then slowed down haven't really gotten all that far. i'm also a little allergic to moe-ness.

Atrocious looking season. Three Kingdoms is my favourite classic, and I have a feeling that the moe shit will get subbed before Souten Kouro does.

The new FMA is a completely new series based more closely on the manga than the original anime was.

So it requires no previous exposure to the franchise.

Oh, Hagaren:FMA and Eden of the East are my two definites for this season.

Beyond that, I have an idle curiosity in DB Kai, and Cross Game and Ristorante Paradiso both seem kind of interesting.

More Chi will be fun too, and Lupin vs. Conan just for the spectacle. :D

Oh, maybe that did happen.

But given how long tournaments could be, that's not THAT unlikely. I've self-drawn a win a couple of times in a night

From what I remember, the main character was really good at reading people's faces or something. Maybe she also had absurdly good luck. I don't really remember. I do remember her getting her butt kicked pretty badly, though, in one of her matches.

self-draw win is not too bad.
self-draw win off the last tile is hella hard. because it needs to have nobody winning up to the last tile and the last tile to belonging to you and be a tile that you need.

saki seems to have the ability to read the game in the first chapter. to avoid dealing the winning tiles. and good at keeping score.

Well, if it was self drawing the win off of last tiles 5 times, THEN that's a bit... yea....

And i think it's really just reading people. You can kind of guess (and use probability, and look at the tiles that were thrown away) to see what tiles are dangerous to discard. One of my friends is moderately good at this (im pretty bad. I give away so many winning tiles.)

I mean, besides the 0 thing near the beginning, I didn't find the manga THAT unbelievable.
