Popular directors whose movies you just hate.

And in some cases... you can't even put your finger on why.

Immediately one name comes to my mind and that name is Oliver Stone. Most of his movies just seem so... shallow and phony that I just can't stomach watching them. Having nothing to do with their political or ideological messages... I just think they're shit movies. For a guy who likes to make "historical" dramas and biopics of influential people he often only barely scrape the surface of what the subject matter is/was really all about.

I will not go see an Oliver Stone movie.

Robert Altman.

Aside from 3 Women, holy crud, totes snoozefest. I'll never forget watching Nashville and in like the first five minutes, you're following that campaign van and I'm like "Dude! Cut away! I get it. IT'S DRIVING. I'M ASLEEP NOW."

Ugh.

Tim Burton. I hate his drab use of colour, I hate his range of actors, and numerous other things. Haven't enjoyed anything of his except a bit of Sleepy Hollow.

Wouldn't say that I literally hate his movies, but Martin Scorsese movies doesn't grab me as much as I would like them to.

Tim Burton. His movies are annoying and he uses the same cast of people even if they don't fit the role at all(I'm looking at you Johnny).

Also Michael Bay. I mean come on if you can't make a good transformers movie you can't direct. It's giant robots fighting, you can't get any easier than that.

Tarantino. I can't really explain why, but I've tried watching a few of his movies, and disliked them all.

Edit: I also try to avoid anything that Michael Bay has been involved with.

If someone doesn't like Spielberg, what types of movies do they like considering the range he's done?

My vote would go to Michael Bay. His movies would be better if not for the scissor constantly in hands at editing time.

That's sort of the idea. Michael Bay is popular but to say his movies are shit goes without saying.

Stop mentioning Michael Bay. We all know his movies are shit. There's no need to explain and there is nothing interesting about this opinion. We all know. Try to be a bit more creative.

Spielberg aint that good.

I can understand the hate Spielberg gets as I share some of it, but he's still a fantastic director. At his best he is wonderful.

Yep, me too. I can't watch any of them, I always detest his protagonists.

I'm going to second both Ridley Scott and Tim Burton. Ridley for not making a decent movie since Alien, and Tim for not making anything good at all. Well, Beetlejuice is fun.

"Gladiator"? Really? I almost hate that movie more than the Star Wars prequels. There was nothing interesting there.

Oh yeah, Kevin Smith totally.

I liked his first few movies when I was 16, 18 or so but going back to them now, I cringe.

Even his "respected" stuff like Chasing Amy or Clerks. can't stand how everyone talks. feels so false.

Also, I've only really enjoyed one and a half Stanley Kubrick movies.

Platoon, Wall Street how can you not like these two?

Hate is such a strong word. I don't really hate certain directors or movies.

But if i have to choose one for the sake of the thread it's probably Darren Aronofsky. Some of his films are pure self important, pretentious crap imo. I loved The Wrestler tho and in an coincident this seems to be the movie that his fans dislike the most.

I rewatched Short Cuts recently and it's just as awesome as I remembered it. I also think Popeye is so well adapted from the source material that it borders on eerie. Love that movie.

Tarantino, since Jackie Brown every film just gets worse and worse.
This I can totally get behind. Tarantino is a better writer/idea man than director (see: True Romance, Natural Born Killers), but even his writing annoys me now because:

A. It's increasingly self indulgent. At this point all his stuff comes across as pure cinematic masturbation.

B. He exposed himself too much trying to act, and now I hear every "cool" line his characters say in my head in Tarantino's voice. You know those "can't unsee" pictures? I can't unhear Tarantino's obnoxious voice.

Aronofsky fans dislike The Wrestler? News to me. The only movie I've seen of his that I can sort of relate to what you're saying with is The Fountain, and I think that's mostly because too much extraneous material was left in. You could cut 20 minutes or a half hour from that film and actually have something great imo. I will admit I really fucking hate his wife's performance in it though.

This thread is seriously full of bad taste. For every director someone lists here I could name a good amount of their work that was masterpieces or at least great films (except for Michael Bay and Brett Ratner).

I honestly tried to come up with someone to post here but I couldn't! Yay for liking movies!

I'd say Michael Bay but I don't think he really counts as a "director."

This thread is pretty much going to be everyone trying to one up each other on outlandish statements about great directors. But the two above should be no-brainers.

While I wouldn't define him as popular, he's fairly well-known to the gaming community.

Oh I got one more.

Clint Eastwood.

now, I don't hate the movies he's directed, but everything other than Unforgiven just doesn't do much for me.

I think a lot of the people being named did their strongest work earlier in the careers. It's possible to like some of the films a director has done but come to despise them over time. I feel that way about Burton and Tarantino, and Spielberg too, except he occasionally still squeezes out something I can buy into between the ones that bother me.

Won't stop picking the right nation
I'm divided on Stone. The use of "facts" in JFK is kind of reprehensible, but the film is so energetic and well-directed that it's hard not to get wrapped up into the movie. The internal logic of the movie makes it a fun watch, especially as the entire case is slowly laid out; I just wish he had some fidelity to the actual truth.

I tend not to hate films that are generally well regarded because I can usually see why others consider them great. All I can do is say who makes me apathetic, so I'll echo Malik, Tarantino, and Burton. I like their movies, and I generally like what they represent, but their films don't move me as much as other great directors. For instance, I would take every other picture over Pulp Fiction that was nominated for Best Picture that year except Four Weddings and a Funeral. That includes Forrest Gump, Shawshank, and Quiz Show. Tarantino tries to use clever dialogue to sustain interest or tension, but he isn't quite up to the level of, say, David Mamet or Leonard Elmore. I did like Inglourious Basterds, however, because of the war motif. It gives real tension to his films that I think were lacking in his more fantastical efforts.

Spielberg is very strange for me. Looking at his filmographie i'm always surprised how many of his films i like but i have trouble to see a pattern. As a director he is somehow lacking an own style. He just knows how to make good, entertaining movies. But if you would watch a movie of him by accident without knowing you couldn't tell that it was him who directed it.

He has great style, but his movies just aren't very good. They are more experiments in editing.

I didn't expect anyone in this thread to list that guy. I honestly thought he would be untouchable cause he's so awesome.

Platoon is good.

Most of the directors I'd list have at least one or two movies that I think are good.

I can't stand Wall Street because I don't like Michael Douglas in anything. He's in my list of "Actors you don't like for some reason." list.

Same as Sharon Stone. Fucking bitch. I wanted Robert Deniro to slay her in Casino.

Seeing as how you're a film buff it would be more interesting to hear your thoughts, actually. I suspect anyone posting in this thread expects that when they list a popular director they don't care for that some people aren't going to agree. That's sort of a given. It's the back and forth that make it worth while, as long as people can be respectful about it.

Anybody listing Spielberg needs to be put down.

Respeck.

I can understand some people's hate of Spielberg, but I wonder if they are basing it on his recent work or his entire body of work. Because his output in the 70s and early 80s is nearly untouchable in quality.

And Willy baffles me again.

Put me down for Oliver Stone. And the fuck at people saying Spielberg, what movies did you guys grow up with?
