8.2 is really impressive actually. I didn't expect it to be that high.

Any news on profit/revenue for the game division yet?

The Entertainment & Devices Division posted revenue of $4.24 billion, an increase of 15% from the prior period. The Xbox 360 installed base now totals approximately 66 million consoles and 18 million Kinect sensors. Xbox LIVE now has 40 million members worldwide, an increase of 33% from the prior year period.

I'd love to see Kinect sales. I have a fairly strong feeling that it's still doing well in the US, but it's fallen off in Europe (and is basically non-existent in Japan).

EDIT:

Ah, so we have a worldwide LTD of 18 million for Kinect. That's, what, 8 million up from the beginning of this year, isn't it? Here's hoping for a regional breakdown because I'm convinced most of that 8 million will have been sold in the US...

Does it mention its profit?

8.2m is a really impressive number but considering that actual sales in the quarter where probably around 6.5m they definetly overshipped by a certain margin.
The extent will be seen in the next quarter.

So then they weren't channel stuffing? Or is that not clear from the info we have? Because wasn't there a lot of butthurt over the 66 million and claims of channel stuffing.

Nice effort to get 8.2 out there.

Hehehe, I bought a new 4GB Xbox 360 Slim on Boxing Day, so I guess I'm part of the surge! It was only $129.99, and EB Games gave me $100 credit for trading in my fat old 360. Pretty awesome deal. The thing was started to sound like a jet engine.

Channel stuffing implies intent. With December being as disappointing as it was it is unlikely that there was intent to end the year with a ton of inventory. They were most likely expecting them to sell through.

Text from their 10-Q filing:

Entertainment and Devices Division (“EDD”) develops and markets products and services designed to entertain and connect people. EDD offerings include the Xbox 360 entertainment platform (which includes the Xbox 360 gaming and entertainment console, Kinect for Xbox 360, Xbox 360 video games, Xbox LIVE, and Xbox 360 accessories), Mediaroom (our Internet protocol television software), Skype, and Windows Phone, including related patent licensing revenue. In November 2010, we released Kinect for Xbox 360. We acquired Skype on October 13, 2011.

Three months ended December 31, 2011 compared with three months ended December 31, 2010

EDD revenue increased primarily reflecting higher Xbox 360 platform revenue as well as Skype revenue from the date of acquisition. Xbox 360 platform revenue grew $322 million or 9%, led by increased volumes of Xbox 360 consoles sold and higher Xbox LIVE revenue, offset in part by lower volumes of standalone Kinect sensors sold. We shipped 8.2 million Xbox 360 consoles during the second quarter of fiscal year 2012, compared with 6.3 million Xbox 360 consoles during the second quarter of fiscal year 2011.

EDD operating income decreased reflecting higher operating expenses, offset in part by revenue growth. Cost of revenue grew $461 million or 19% primarily due to higher volumes of Xbox 360 consoles sold, payments made to Nokia related to joint strategic initiatives, Skype cost of revenue, and higher royalty costs resulting from an increase in Xbox LIVE digital marketplace third-party content sold. Research and development expenses increased $101 million or 37%, primarily reflecting higher headcount-related expenses, including Skype headcount. Sales and marketing expenses increased $94 million or 27%, primarily reflecting higher headcount-related expenses, including Skype headcount, and amortization of acquired Skype intangibles.

it was worthless a while ago when kin and zune divisions were included as well.

Not really, xbox made up nearly all of the revenue/costs so you could at least figure out profit minimums since everything else was a money sink. Once we get past holiday quarters the 360 revenue will make up a much smaller portion of the overall revenue

This sounds like MS expected to sell more stand alone Kinect than they did.

How is it they can even be accused of "channel stuffing" considering how much consoles they sell every month? Just last month they literally sold hundreds of thousands more than the competition so there is clearly a want.

The financial reports will be a better guess at their next console timeline than wild rumors.

well that was unexpected. i thought it was next week.

8.4m was the expected ship, so they come in a little lower.

usa sales were only up from 3.55 to ~3.8 yoy, vs a ship of 6.3 last 4q, so it basically looks like they overshipped some.

they will almost certainly gain some on sony though.

on revenue, are all these android patent agreements raking in big cash yet? seems like they would. xbox should be racking it in too.

first article i googled on this

Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, reported second-quarter profit that beat estimates, lifted by holiday sales of Xbox machines and Kinect sensors, as well as corporate software demand.

Microsoft's Xbox business got a boost from Christmas shoppers, who snapped up its video-game consoles and Kinect sensor controllers, and signed up for the Xbox Live online service. That helped make up for slow Windows sales, which were hurt by sluggish demand for personal computers and a shortage of hard drives stemming from floods in Thailand.

“Xbox looks strong and Xbox Live looks really strong,” said Kim Caughey Forrest, an analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group Inc., which owns Microsoft shares. Sales of Office programs also performed well, she said. “Those were all good things to see.”

Xbox is the star of the show. It's really MS only successful venture outside of Windows. they have a lot riding on it at this point.
