Thief's XP system culled due to negative fan feedback

Thief developer Eidos Montreal has removed the game's XP system after a mixed reception from fans.

The game mechanic offered rewards for performing kills in specific ways, with bonuses offered for headshots and the like.

Fans of the series said that this strayed too far from Thief's main gameplay - stealthily thieving things - and Eidos Montreal has now agreed.

"It was reducing our motivation to steal," game director Nic Cantin explained in a blog post. "The main goal of a thief should be to gain loot. Garrett is already the Master Thief, so we saw no need to have XP as a core mechanic."

O...k ?

I think it's a good thing, but such changes so far in dev ? I'm really starting to get worried about his game :(

From what I understand, and this is completely based on the actual PR that is being rained on us for the last few months, is that features like this is like hitting a switch! A light switch if you will.

Are you actually going to take credit for this?

Good, shallow XP systems has been plague in many recent games. Light tinkering isn't all that bad but it gets tedious on the long run.

I didn't like the idea of an XP system, but it's unfortunate that the developers can't make the game they want to make. Still, I hope this is for the good of the game.

No interest in Thief, but I hope we see more games trend back away from every single product needing some kind of XP/upgrade system. It feels like it's done without thought just because there's an expectation that it's just how you make a game today, and I really think it ends up being a distraction most times. It encourages players to focus on maximizing their XP instead expressing themselves within the game's systems.

That's good. Why does everything need XP nowadays anyway.

They announced this at New York Comic Con and I swear the third question during the Q&A was
"But if there's no XP how will I know my character is progressing, or I am accomplishing anything".

SIGH

Also at the panel-

In describing the game they heavily emphasized how Garrett dislikes killing and seemed kind of perturbed when the gameplay demo (in video form) was played with Garret killing fools. Said he prefers a ghost playthrough.

I wonder if this is a sign that they are trying to change fan perception now.

This change is for the best. Getting tons of XP by shooting people in the face is absurd in a stealth game where you're supposed to sneak around and steal stuff.

After all, why sneak if killing everyone grants you more XP? It's an awful game mechanic for this game that never should've been implemented in the first place and whichever designer suggested this should've been escorted out of the building.

If you're gonna include upgrades, have the player buy them in this particular game. The game is called Thief for a reason.

I am amazed that this was in there in the first place. That looked so terrible in the latest video we saw. The stealth approach awarded the player with less XP than headshotting a guard.

This is still not enough to restore my faith in the game. If they right now figuring this out this game might be even more of mess development wise than we heard before.

I like XP systems :(

How about being a good thief, earning a lot of money and being able to buy better equipment? It's the same thing without the awkwardness of XP and especially bullshit like more XP for headshots which has no place in a stealth game.

I'm not sure if the developers wanted it in. Maybe they did, but I would bet XP system was implemented because many current best sellers have XP system as well.

Sure, that's a possibility. In that case, good riddance.

If a giant "+15 XP" sign in neon-colored letters doesn't rise from the corpse of a slain enemy, how will I know I am awesome?

Keep in mind guys this XP system wasn't tied to upgrades or anything. It was purely cosmetic.

I get that its probably too late in to fix what sound like the more fundamental issues, but if you were to ask me what I thought the biggest problems with what they've shown off were this wouldn't be near the top of the list...

I guess I wasn't really referring to this specific title, just the general concept of 'Get XP - Level Up - Do New Things'. I like it.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Does this mean this game will have no reward system at all?

I mean, it's empty speculation, but seems like too many AAA games try to force in elements from other popular games. Often these forced elements don't bring anythig of value into the game. Could be that the devs had good ideas, but I personally I suspect "marketing research" led to the XP system.

Yeah, i'm getting a feeling this could be a huge mess of a game. They obviously realise they may have gone too far from the old formula and were losing the existing fanbase without necessarily looking like they were gaining many new buyers. It was looking like another Tomb Raider which is a good game but not a good Tomb Raider game and now i may start to hope that Thief might be a good Thief game.

This.
EXP system isn't inherently bad. Its just these developers are too boxed and used as it is regardless the type of the game.

If you're going to reward XP they need to take a hint from Dishonoured but it even further:
  • Give some XP for kills.
  • Give waaay more than that for taking items.
  • Give more than that for completing a mission without raising an alarm.
  • Give waaaay more than that for completing a mission/map without any kills.
  • Give waaaaaaay more than that for completing a mission/map without ever being seen.

While I'm at it... Dishonoured is already the next Thief game as far as I'm concerned.

Jesus, you couldn't make this shit up. They are actually taking credit for removing it...

Fine but it's not like every fucking game needs it. It's sad that people need this instant gratification by filling up bars even if it basically means nothing.

Look where that got Brink. Splash Damage fucked that game up so hard. Fan feedback should be taken into consideration too.

If an XP system is being fitted into thief, none of the numbers should be visible to the player.

They should all raise quiietly in the background and gradually increase your movement speed while crouched in slight ways, your stealth meter's bias toward being hidden in slight ways, and other things that would increase your effectiveness as a thief as you get further into the game.

I think visually rewarding kills IN ANY WAY should be antithetical to what thief is doing. The fact that these guys didn't even realize that tells me all I need to know about this game.
Reads like them taking credit for removing it, after they were the ones who thought it would be a good idea to have an XP system in the first place.
"Hey guys, we are proud to announce that a system that we added (which easily breaks the core concept behind this franchise but we never realized was a bad idea in the first place) is being removed.

"We listen to your feedback!"

I'm glad they took it out too, but I don't know why you have to call people that like XP systems 'sad' and needing 'instant gratification'. Nothing wrong with different preferences.
