Towerfall sold best on PS4 ($500k sold, 7k units on Ouya)

Towerfall developer Matt Thorson has revealed to Eurogamer that his retro archery-based competitive multiplayer spectacular has been more successful on PS4 than its PC brethren on Steam.

"It's actually doing better on PS4, but it's still doing well on PC," he said in an interview over Skype. "It's doing definitely well enough for me to support myself for quite awhile. That's really encouraging."

Thorson attributed part of Towerfall's PS4 success on the fact that consoles are generally in people's living rooms, hooked up to their TVs by default, whereas PCs are less frequently set up to entertain groups. "I think it's just a console game, ya know?" he said of Towerfall. "People have controllers - it's not confusing to get the controllers like it is for PC - and people have it in their living rooms already. I think a lot of people still sit down with their friends when they play their consoles, whereas they don't do that on PC. Even if it's a single-player game. I know me and my friends will sit down and one of us will be playing a game while everyone else is just hanging out."

"Another reason it's done so well on PS4 is support from Sony." He added. "They've featured and promoted it really well."

When asked about the original Ouya version of Towerfall, Thorson estimated that it had sold about 7000 copies on the Android console. "Being the best game on Ouya isn't a huge deal, but it is nice. It still sells on there."

So, if it sold that well, they could add online play ?

I mean, I feel like the game would be so great with that.:p

But still, great news for the dev !

Hardly shocking. The Ouya's message was convoluted anyway, with it only becoming more difficult to understand as soon as it was clear that the hardware was going to be a commercial failure. I really hope the devs that are going timed exclusive on the thing are getting a hardy payout, because that seems like cutting your own Achilles tendon at this point.

It kind of shows how the Ouya was a platform only enthusiasts had heard of - the game got a decent amount of hype relative to the small sales the game got on Ouya.

This game is the best local coop I've had with friends in a long time. If you have a ps4 and ever have friends over, buy it!

This is always the game I end up playing when friends/family are over. Vita as an extra controller is a money saver, too.

Well deserved numbers.

Comfy Couch wins again!

J/k, please don't ban me lol. In All seriousness good for him. Always nice when the indy devs can get financially secure enough to really take their time on the next project.

FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND COPIES? WHAT?

WHAT?!

For a $15 (kinda) simple multiplayer game that's friggen impressive. Way to go.

Will be interesting to see indie sales figures on next-gen platforms over the coming months. Really think the indie push that Sony did really payed off to indie devs. Towerfall is great and is really in need of an online mode.

500k total's pretty impressive. Impressive also for PS4, though I wouldn't be surprised if the game will end up selling more on Steam in the end (because PC games generally sell for years now). The game got such publicity though that it might keep on selling on PS4 surprisingly well too.

While the 7k for Ouya doesn't really compare to the PS4 and PC numbers I still think it's not too shabby either. Then again, it's like the best known game on that system I guess.

This makes me VERY happy about how Awesomenauts, Fez, and Steamworld Dig probably sold.

Cool to see that the PS4's indie push is actually being converted into solid, robust sales.

But they say it's a "competitive multiplayer spectacular". Never heard of the game, but with Steamworks you'd think the PC version would be set.
