Best fictional racetracks ever in games

I love a good arcade racer or kart racer, and part of the joy of such games is that the artists can go hog wild with their imaginations coming up with tracks that could never exist in the real world, or are as beautiful as anything you could see in the real world. This means both utterly gorgeous visuals or really inventive gameplay, and often both. I appreciate a good F1 track, but give me something dreamed up without the laws of physics holding it back any day.

I can't be the only one, so what are your favourites? Please post a short explanation, or a pic or vid. Don't post a pic or vid without a name, thanks.

Series: Mario Kart
Game: Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
Track: Cloudtop Cruise
Possibly my favourite track in any game ever, this is the pick from a game where every track feels like a masterpiece. Those fluffy clouds, that SMB3 airship, passing through a lightning storm, only to land on a beanstalk growing out of a '?' block JUST as the Gusty Garden Galaxy theme kicks in... I know it's a dirty word but this shit is damn near euphoric. I just laughed the first time I played it. Laughed and laughed at the preposterous brilliance of it all.

Series: F-Zero
Game: F-Zero GX (Gamecube)
Track: Fire Field: Undulation
One day I'll play this on Dolphin. If I'm honest, basically any single track from GX could have been on here (except the Casino ones, of course). But graphically this one takes the cake, and with the tube sections in shows off just how insane GX really can be.

Series: Gran Turismo
Game: Gran Turismo 4 (PS2)
Track: Tahiti MazeTahiti Maze
Simply gorgeous, and skidding down a Tahitian mountain barely in control of your vehicle was ridiculous fun, and then you came to that orgasmic moment when the car hits the tarmac again and 'snaps' back to standard grip just as you enter a picturesque little seaside town. Makes me want to visit Tahiti, only I know it isn't real.

Series: Wave Race
Game: Wave Race Blue Storm (Gamecube)
Track: Aspen Lake
Yeah, the most boring Wave Race track, but I just can't deny that it was always the one I looked forward too most. It was so tranquil, such a departure from the rest of the game, and you had so much control over your craft. A really memorable track.

Series: Forza Motorsport
Game: Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360) (and others in series)
Track: Maple Valley
The classic 'wish it existed in real life and kinda surprised it doesn't track', this one is synonymous with Forza to me. Had hours of fun on Forza 2 on this one. If someone can find a better vid, that would be great.

Series: Wipeout
Game: Wipeout 2048 (PS Vita)
Track: Sol
Wipeout can be overly technical and fiddly at times, which is why this track is so great. It's Wipeout just letting its hair down and going balls out, F-Zero style. The sense of speed, danger, and verticality of this track is incredible.

Series: Motorstorm
Game: Motorstorm Apocalypse (PS3)
Track: Boardwalk
Otherwise known as 'king of gifs' and I hope some of you will deliver on that front. A perfect blend of insane spectacle and drivability, with lots of water to keep your engine temp down. Almost too much fun.

Series: RalliSport Challenge
Game: RalliSport Challenge (Xbox)
Track: Mediterranean SS-2
As much as I love RSC's dirt and snow, this track is a fantastic showcase for its tarmac physics. It's not hard to learn the gist of, but it's filled with full-throttle turns that are an absolute blast to master and nail, and there's a pretty neat dirt section in the middle which tests your throttle control just enough to add an interesting flow to the 2 minutes without breaking up the craziness.

MK64 Rainbow Road.
MK64 Block Fort too (battle mode!)
Forza Horizon 2 Mini Italy/France (which aren't really racetracks but I wouldn't mind vacationing there lol)

Nickle

Cool Facts: Game of War has been a hit since July 2013
Game: Mario Kart 7
Track: Koopa Beach
Every race is close, the item box placement is great, and there aren't any eventless straightaways. Its a superbly designed track.

Game: Distance
Track: Monolith
Speed, jumps and twists, music, boost cool down placement, it's epic.

---I've run countless Sol laps on 2048, good choice OP.

God, I can't even pick a favorite F-Zero GX track. There's so many gems.

I was about to object to the WipEout 2048 track, but damn. I need to get my hands on a Vita to try that out. I'm more of a fan of XL, but that looks like a nice evolution from the style of track from Pure/Pulse/HD era.

Cloudtop Cruise is pretty good but honestly, Gusty Garden Galaxy melody had more than run its course ( <--- that's a pun) by then.

Don't you ever... don't you ever say that to me.

Totally agree. A great N64 track utterly perfected, and the new colour palette was great, too. The Mario Kart guys are the masters.

MK64 Rainbow Road.

Forza Horizon 2 Mini Italy/France (which aren't really racetracks but I wouldn't mind vacationing there lol)

I'm mixed about MK64 rainbow road. It's so damn long, the shortcut is so capricious and stupid, it's railed in all the way... Yes the music is great and the neon signs in the air are great, but I don't think it holds up all too well. The remake would be the greatest track of all time if it ran for two laps.

God, I can't even pick a favorite F-Zero GX track. There's so many gems.

Worst part is, after all that, I actually posted the wrong one. I wanted the one with the tube. What I actually posted, I have no fucking idea. I think I actually managed to post the worst one, in a game full of incredible tracks.

Koopa beach is better IMO. But Block Fort is out of this world amazing.

Series: Wipeout
Game: Wipeout HD Fury
Track: Sol-2

It's not the best track in the game from a design standpoint but aesthetically it's my favourite. There's something about it that makes laps seem to pass faster.

Agreed on all points. Sol 2 is my favourite art design of any Wipeout track, but far from my favourite race. Sol is much more fun :)

N64 version was better for me, given that the short cut was much harder to nail and there for more important and satisfying.

Series: 1080 Snow Boarding
Game: 1080 Snow Boarding (N64)
Track: Golden Forest

I just remember 1080 being stunning for the time with the mountains in the background really setting the standard for these type of games.

Series: San Francisco Rush
Game: San Francisco Rush (N64)
Track: Track 1

I'm sure most people will label Alcatraz as the better map, and they may be right, but the iconic jump at the end of track 1 seals the deal, for me.

Series:Beetle Adventure Racing
Game: Beetle Adventure Racing (N64)
Track: Mount Mayhem

Tied between this and Inferno Island - enough said, this game's short cuts and track design we T1.

Series:Gran Turismo
Game: Gran Turismo 3 (PS2)
Track: Trial Mountain

I staple for the series, but really never shocked my quite as well as seeing it for the first time on the PS2. I know most people hate on it, but the back uphill straight with tree coverage still makes me teary eyed.

Series:Mario Kart
Game: Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
Track: Mount Wario

Arguably the best track in the game against Sunshine Airport and Cloud top cruise (F-Zero Track is amazing as well), the single run down hill chaos though... absolutely incredible, Nintendo at it's best.

Series: Driveclub
Game: Driveclub (PS4)
Track: Loch Duich
Short track but absolutely thrilling, after you learn it it appears as though you must be driving on rails but before then there's plenty of high speed crashes.

I always have so much fun on this track, and the races always end up being quite exhilarating.

Good choices OP. Fire Field would definitely be my favorite track from GX, but I'm also a sucker for Lightning. Just a really sweet looking level with badass music. It's one of the levels that gives the illusion of speed best.

Aeropolis is also wonderful for those sharp turns and steep ramps. It's a good course for learning the game, and it's fun to practically fly around in the level with the jumps.

Some great off-beat choices there. 1080 was so great. Trial Mountain was the obvious choice for GT, but I have stronger memories of the rally stuff.

Game: Mario Kart 8
Track: Mount Wario

Yeah, Mt. Wario is probably the most fun track in the game. Maybe it's the best, it's just so hard to choose. When you realise your on the side of the damn, then go into the turbine room, and out onto a skiing piste... I couldn't even have dreamed this shit up, you know? And it always makes for a good race due to that final straightaway.

Series: Driveclub
Game: Driveclub (PS4)
Track: Loch Duich

God damn, I'm really gonna have to try this game some day. Probably the most impressive visuals I've ever seen on a console. I was convinced these were real places.

I always had a soft spot for the Trident from F-Zero GX, but there are far too many good tracks in that game to really pick a favorite.

The background is a little sterile, but the track itself is awesome, especially when the three tracks form that tunnel. To be honest, cleaner background visuals were probably a good thing in F-Zero GX.

dofry

That's "Dr." dofry to you.
What was that free to play car game with insane tracks and press to instant restart mechanic? I would post some tracks from that but can't remember the name...

Series: Sega All Stars Racing
Game: Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed
Track: Adder's Lair
This cavernous volcano lair provides the perfect melting pot to bring together all aspects of Transformed's vehicular variety. The flight sections give plenty of stalagmites to try and gain a sneaky risk boost off of, the car sections involve swinging hazards, split roads and long curves to try and balance a drift around. Then you've got the boat which rides the lava flow, it's almost like Diddy Kong Racing's Hot Top Volcano track taken to the next level.
Also has rad music.

Series: Mario Kart
Game: Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
Track: Dragon Driftway
Maybe I'm jumping the gun on this one, I was relatively late to the DLC after all so this is still pretty fresh for me but what I loved about this track was how it blended a simple drift heavy track design with gorgeous aesthetics. A powersliding trip around a curving course carved out in the visage of SMG2's Gobbleguts dragon themed among an oriental backdrop, gorgeous and heavy on the anti gravity.

Usually I'd throw in something for Mario Kart Wii's Maple Treeway but I'll just leave it at these two for now, just know that Maple Treeway is the good stuff.

Series: Gran Turismo
Game: 2
Track: Red Rock Valley

Loved this crazy track. Hope it comes back someday.

GT2 is such an oddity in that it has a number of fan favorite tracks that have never again appeared in the series. I've been hoping that Grindelwald would return, but still no sign.

I like a lot of the original tracks from Gran Turismo, my favs are:

Grand Valley
Deep Forest
Trial Mountain

Never liked Seattle though, the jumps are stupid.

Is currently staging a hunger strike outside Gearbox HQ while trying to hate them to death
F1 World GP on the N64 had a great hidden track set around a volcano, IIRC they kept it secret for almost a year.
