Ps4 was nearly double Xbox One sales in Jan

I don't understand all this talk of a 'Kinect free' Xbone SKU. The Kinect is at the heart of the Xbone's philosophy. Much like the WiiU and it's Gamepad I don't understand why people think that MS will abandon this at the drop of a hat.

If they dump Kinect and start trying to slash away at the price to make it comparable to even cheaper than the PS4 it just leaves MS with an under powered console compared to it's direct rival.

The Kinect (love it or loathe it) gives the Xbone a unique selling point and gives the consumer a real alternate to the cheaper and more powerful PS4. If I were MS I'd have done more to lure the family crowd.

"Hey kids lets all gather round the Xbox One and Skype Grandma..., or something"

By now people still talking shit about Kinect simply haven't used it and are talking out of their ass and/or simply have no intention to buy an XB1 to begin with. Generally speaking anyway. The device definitely is at the heart of the console, not that that excuses the inferior hardware.

I think these sales have far less to do with anything else other than price points. The economy isn't favourable. At $500 and only available in 13 country the consumer is more likely to go with the cheaper, more widely available competitor. Unfortunately familiar names here are simply fuelling their posts with console war bullshit to interpret that as some wide sweeping resistance towards Microsoft or whatever the fuck.

What's funny about this though is that both consoles are driven by desperation and one just happened to get it right. Xbox is desperate to be profitable to stay open. Sony is desperate for any kind of profit so, even with their crushing debts and whatever else, they managed to create a stronger console with a cheaper price tag, probably because they were willing to sacrifice the peripheral, much like a wolf biting off its own limb to get out of a trap and save itself.

I'm a PC gamer so I don't really follow consoles but is this really surprising? The PS4 was cheaper with better hardware, plus Microsoft shot themselves in the foot countless times before launch.

Glad to see the cboat family of posters is still #1 across Neogaf and ok. Over 500 million hours have been spent looking at cboat posts.

Peter Moore seems a bit salty. Hope Microsoft payed him a LOT of money for Titanfall exclusivity.

I expect they did.

EA don't care. Gain some steam with the Microsoft exclusive, release Titanfall 2 (similar upgrade to what Left 4 Dead 2 was) in March 2015 on PS4/X1/PC and watch the money roll in.

Because Steve Ballmer is gone. The idea of having the XB1 be the last stop ditch effort for MS to get inside the living room and sneak their (Ballmer's) vision of the future is gone.

Steve leaving is the death of Kinect.

So you're just waiting for an Xbone price drop basically? Or you want them to actually put out more powerful hardware?

Well, I think it's unrealistic, that a new and more powerful Xbox One will release so, yeah, price drop, probably. But I'm patient, so we shall see.

Huge mistake. Kinect is the only differentiator and for MS to drop it and lose that when they have absolutely nothing else going for them...

A differentiator only matters if it's useful and people want it. Where's the Kinect software? Where is the Kinect software people care about? At this point it's an extra $100-$150 tacked on to navigate the UI, which is ridiculous.

What? There's was nothing godawful about Crackdown or Viva Pinata or State of Deacy or Mark of the Ninja or Marlow Briggs or Alan Wake...

Come on dude...

Microsoft's "exclusives" are not god awful however, "Viva Pinata," "State of Decay," "Mark of the Ninja" "Alan Wake" and "Marlow Briggs" are not exclusive. They're all on PC

Lower price will do more to move consoles than a superfluous differentiator will. Of course, they could always cut the price and keep the Kinect, but I'm not sure MS would do that.

I agree. They've been trying to push the 'value' proposition over the power difference but if they drop Kinect, they'll have lost their only differentiating factor. Couple that with that 8% gained by allowing develops to opt out of snap and Kinect functionality and you have the biggest 180 ever to grace the console business. And what about all those people that where forced to buy a Kinect when they didn't want one? All of this AND multiplatform games will STILL be better on the 'similarly' priced PS4.

Europe has gone, Japan will follow and it looks like US is going.

I think it's pretty foolish to expect a big huge IP from a new game and sell a exclusive deal to a system that has half what the competition base has.

I mean the game could sell an easy 2-3 million, but it could of easily doubled that with sony consoles.

And even if Microsoft paid the offset of "what it would of made on sony systems" what about the money they would of made on sequels? You cant build a brand beyond epic proportions like they want by limiting the user base.

Sure it will sell a good amount, but it could of sold more, and it could sell off that hype for sequels...but it cant. Everyone wants their payday and short term profits and nobody wants to invest in the long run..

When your philosophy isn't selling, you need to update your philosophy.

Thank fucking goodness.

The most ridiculous thing about all of this is that Microsoft, an economically strong company, choose to be cheap fucks when they could have been smart, gone with stronger hardware AND kept the Kinect to draw casuals. They fact that they have the balls to demand more money for inferior hardware is distasteful.

that puzzling face
It's fun to poke at futile attempts of corporate cloak and dagger in the face of enthusiasts. Wouldn't be nearly as funny if Microsoft doesn't try so hard to deceive with pseudo-statistics.

Hey, marketing your product to the ignorant is a perfectly legitimate business strategy.

The reason is price. 1080p vs whatever is NOT the reason people aren't buying.

Price has always been huge.

Holiday 2014 will be huge if MS cant come close

Nothing is impossible, these days.

No that's pretty impossible.

"Hey guys I have an idea on how to save the XB1!"

"Great!, what is it?"

"We abandon the current XB1 install base, alienating them forever, and spend a shit ton of money redeveloping the XB1 so it's on par with the PS4."

Xbox One owner here, I don't find much positivity in Kinect. Personally I think it tries to solve problems that are not there.

RE: Kinect: Yes, they'd have to significantly rework the whole UI to make it work better without Kinect IMO and the quick switching and snapping is useful.

RE: Sales: You know NPD is just US sales right? And the XBOne has been more available.

These are both true actually. It just feels at this point that every decision MS made about the Xbone has been a wrong one.

At this point (with CBOAT's posts in this thread) I have to wonder what form the Xbone will survive in given how MS might just start slashing away at it to try and gain some more traction.

Unless MS release a stripped down Xbone 'Core' unit that is able to match the PS4 on price I'm not sure where the new Xbox will sit. It will forever be seen as the inferior hardware so what can of audience will they chase?

I wonder if they drop Kinect and add more horsepower to the console?

Either way, the horse is out of the barn it seems....and Microsoft will need to be playing catch up. (Not that they can't achieve parity or anything, but it going to take some resources)

I'd say that the PS4 almost doubling up on the XB1 in its home territory during just its second full month on the market is a bit surprising, yes. Especially when you consider that supply constraints were a much bigger issue for Sony in January than for MS.

Well most of the people at Xbox are disingenuous so this kind of thing isn't such a surprise.

this is pretty inscredible

They'll have a cheaper console to fight next 4Q. It'll still be a step down on power, but there's one monkey off their back.

Someone should tell MS that 'Desperation Makes a Stinky Cologne'.

Let's just say you don't wanna be downwind of Redmond lately...

I think those people putting all their money on a reduced price making a huge difference are going to be disappointed. They'd also have to make up numbers they lost because of people waiting for the Kinectless SKU.
