Where to buy a great mattress without dealing with the shitty mattress industry?

Anyone have any trips?

The mattress retail industry is right up there with used car salesmen in terms of people I enjoy dealing with. Manufacturers even change the name of their lines per retailer to obfuscate their products and to make comparison shopping more difficult.

Last two mattresses, I avoided them by buying mid-tier foam mattresses from IKEA, but they haven't held up very well after a couple years.

I just want an awesome mattress for my money that will hold up for years. Recommendations?

Last time I bought a bed I went to a retailer that had beds, jumped on a few and bought the one that was most comfortable. Dunno why you are equating buy a bed to a used car, theres practically no risk.

I bought a memory foam mattress from Amazon for 300 bucks and it's more comfortable than my tempurpedic.

Which one was it? Thinking about buying one of these and I know there's some decent options out there. Just want to head in the right direction.

Go to a local Mattress maker and have him custom make you one.

All of my house's mattresses are custom made by this guy in a corner shop I found. Best sleep I ever had.

I bought a really cheap but decent quality one at Macys during a veterans day sale or something. Most of the mattresses from a company seem to be similar, just with different names for each store.

After days of research for when I needed a new mattress, this is what I would suggest. I didn't have the money for it but managed to find a local mattress place that did a high pocket spring mattress with a cashmere cover. IF I had the money I'd have gone with a locally made custom one.

Also don't be fooled by RRPs and 'crazy money off' lies. At least in the UK they say stuff was worth much more than it was and that they'd taken 50% off which was actually still too much for the mattress in reality.

This site has a tonne of info on Mattress makers and the bullshit they try to pull, bit awkward to navigate but it's brilliant info.

Bought this bed and I love it. Free shipping and no tax (if you live in an awesome state). Can't beat that

Sorry for the bump. I actually bought this, and it didn't hold up after an year. Lumpy on both ends even with rotations.

Been dealing with a bad back and TMJ. I think this mattress singlehandedly gave me terrible sleep for the past 3-4 months. I've been having a lot of stiff necks and back issues. I've tried sleeping with and without a pillow. After one hot night, I woke up with TMJ.

Awesome bed at first. Now, just very disappointed. The middle portion is developing somewhat of a sinkhole, and the edges of the bed are fine. However, I can't really flip the bed upside down since the foam is on one side only.

Looking for a new one now.

I found a really good basic but cheaply priced one during a memorial day sale at Macys. Came with frame and free in-city delivery. The mattress stores around here were all crazy.

Mine (link above) is still going strong after two years and hundreds of GoT orgies.

Haha.

I saw your suggestion earlier, and I may consider it.

However, I'm leaning towards just buying a bed from Costco and go on from there. I think I'm scarred from buying beds on Amazon.

Damn. I really wanted to keep this bed for a few more years.

Amazon. I bought this one about two years ago, and it's the most comfortable mattress I've ever used. No issues, though memory foam mattresses tend to sleep a bit 'warm'.

BedInABox is my mattress provider. I got the baseline model, and it's great. It doesn't have a bad smell and supports me well. It doesn't transfer motion, either. The downside is that it can be a little warmer than a traditional mattress, but I don't mind it.

Update.

I tried sleeping without a pillow again, and it sort of worked. I don't have back pain today although I don't know if it's the ibuprofen that cured it.

I think I'll try switching out my pillow first then although looking for a replacement seems impossible since there is always someone complaining not enough neck support.

If money isn't a problem I'd recommend a Tempur mattress. I've been using one for a few years and it has been complete bliss.

Wait for the next holiday and buy one at Sears. I got a fantastic mattress for half off with free delivery and a free box frame.

A bunch of my friends have one and they say it's awesome. It is a bit stiffer than a typical foam mattress, but that can be solved with a good mattress pad.

I would recommend against the mattress pad. I have a Tuft & Needle. It is firmer than average, yes, but their claim is that firmer than average mattresses lead to better sleep and less back pain, and so far I've found no reason to disagree. If they are correct, then trying to "fix" their product seems counterproductive--and if they're not correct, then buying their product to begin with seems like a bad idea. Just my two cents. My partner "doesn't like" firm mattresses, but I told her "can you just try this for a week and not complain and after the week if it's a problem, tell me and we'll get something else" and lo and behold, the complaint never came and she also hasn't whined about back problems since.

The other advantage of Casper or Tuft & Needle is that both have a no-questions-asked warranty, which compares favourably to the shitty "we will hassle you" warranty every other mattress brand has. Both also have no-questions-asked trial periods, so if you're scared to buy something that person-specific online, don't worry. The way T&N's works is that if you don't like the mattress, they find a local charity in your area to pick it up from you. You give the charity the mattress, the charity gives you a receipt, you take a picture for T&N, voila refund.

Bed in a Box.

They sell primarily (actually, I think only) memory foam mattresses of all varieties. There are plenty of options depending on your sleep preferences and the prices/warranty policies are really great.

When I moved into my new apartment I bought the, I believe, Elegance Silk Model, and have been having some of my most restful nights of sleep in a long time. Their foundation that you can purchase is really sturdy as well.

I was wary about having a memory foam mattress sealed, rolled and shipped but after receiving the package I was glad (my wallet too) I went that route.

They make a living by selling something you only replace after 8-10 years.
Of course prices are going to be a bit high.

Oh, makes sense. I bought a simmons for 6k last year on sale, it was priced at 11k so I had the impression that the box stores gave better prices.

I bought my mattress from Sams Club, no problems yet.

I also slept on memory foam for 3 years through college, and now I have back pain all day unless I sleep on something hard as a rock.

My mom uses a waterbed and says it fixed all of her neck problems though.
