Facebook has acquired Oculus VR for 2 Billion US Dollars

But why? I'm so perplexed by such a move... if true, I'm not happy with that news. I mean, Oculus was/is a privately held company, right? Now if this acquisition is happening, that would now make them a part of a publicly traded company and now thusly having to deal with all that comes with it? Not feeling that, if that is the case... I especially don't like the idea of facebook gaining from this.

So Oculus VR went from the most promising, exciting thing happening in gaming to completely worthless and irrelevant just like that.

You know, it kind of makes sense. VR has he potential to be much broader than just games - virtual tourism, telepresence etc. some of that would suit Facebook really well, expanding how we communicate with each other in the future.

Well apparently they're not changing the gaming focus to start. Once that consumer model is out though, fuck knows what will happen.

That is really odd, has Facebook shown interest for gaming before? Are they going to gut out Oculus technology for their own crappy social things? Wat?

I think they made quite an amount of money out of Farmville and other Facebook games.

Wow, people should calm down. It could even means good news if that meant more means to make a better product.
The only thing that matters with that device is the hardware itself. It'll be up to developpers to make contents that cater to specific audience.

This is either the best or worst thing that could happen to gaming as we know it. The most promising upcoming tech that could reignite the mainstream market's interest in core games was just bought by Facebook.

Reading Zuckerberg's statement, it sounds like "We'll do games and then a bunch of other shit like putting you courtside at sports events." That sounds pretty cool but I'd rather see a 100% focus on gaming.

Wonder what this means for Valve's VR.

How would real life things like courtside/concerts would hold back VR in gaming?

Well, on the one hand I get to say "haha, $2 billion" to all the people calling VR a "gimmick".

On the other hand, I feared this would happen ever since Brendan Iribe got announced as Oculus CEO. Building up new tech and then selling it as soon as viable is his MO.

On the third hand FUCK. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.

FUCK

I knew that was the goal, I just never thought it would be before THEY'VE EVER SHIPPED A RETAIL PRODUCT.

Fuuuuckkkkkkkkkk
