Just be sure to get the Japanese version as it has Tate mode.

I'm keeping that in mind.

Had a quick glance on ebay and amazon, found both NA and Japanese versions new/sealed going for hundreds of dollars. Must be because Raiden II is so difficult to properly emulate because of the protection.
Found some cheaper copies too.

Ah crap and I almost completely forgot about Raiden DX that special version of Raiden II released in Japan for arcades and PlayStation.

As great as the PSX versions of the Raiden games are, I was always bummed that they didn't include the intro sequence for 2. I remember it blowing my mind back in the day.

So yeah. Dodonpachi SaiDai is freaking ridicks.
Couldn't even 1CC novice mode.

360 mode is weird. Nobody ever shuts up. Just constant yakking.
Did you play shot/laser or expert in novice? Cause the latter gets pretty tricky in parts even compared to normal mode.

The Raiden Project had some funny intros if you let it run long enough:

But yeah, the original arcade intro / attract sequence from Raiden II is not there.

Luckily I found it for both II and DX:

I wasn't really sure where to ask this, but the talk of "next-gen" STGs reminded me. Can you use USB controllers on the PS4/XB1? In particular, I'm thinking of the SLS Saturn USB pad or the NEO-GEO PS3 pad (obviously I'm just thinking of PS4 support with this one).

No. Apparently it's "up to the publisher" to support PS3 controllers on PS4, but I've yet to see it outside of promised support for legacy steering wheels in Driveclub.

So looking forward to the NA PSN release of Raiden IV Overkill on PS3 later this month.

And after reading this, I gotta try to find a copy of The Raiden Project for PS1, if possible.

Oh The Raiden Project is brilliant. But I love Raiden DX even more so. That's on Japanese PSN btw. ;)

I remember asking the guy that owned the local Game Mania store back in the day when the PSone was just released constantly about this game.
It came out on November 21 while the system itself was September 30th and thus it was one of my most wanted launch period games.

He was completely baffled by my enthusiasm for this game and couldn't even begin to understand why I was so hyped about this one instead of everything else that was coming out. :) Fun times.

I played Raiden DX in ePSXe the other day!

On another note, I demand to be able to play Taito's unreleased R-GEAR aka "RayForce 1.5" if it gets dumped, whether it was a near complete game, early prototype or whatever.

R-GEAR looked to be a sprite-based follow up to RayForce, before the series went polygonal 3D with Ray Storm.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3Dp1tSV36M

Apparently the video was featured on a bonus CD-ROM for the Ray Ray Collection for PS1 in Japan. The game began development on the Taito F3 board.

I don't own an xbone, but will try out my SLS on the PS4 when I get home and post back here (warning: won't be for several hours). Any specific game you would like em to test?

I have an SLS PS2 Darkstalkers Saturn pad, hopefully it can be used on next gen consoles in the future. I already have it working with a converter on the Wii U.

I have that exact pad also, love it. If I were a normal person, I probably would have just bought an adapter as well, but instead went ahead and also bought a USB SLS pad.

Speaking of Raiden...
Check out these awesome shirts:
http://1cc.storenvy.com/
Raiden is shirt of the month.

I haven't played a Raiden game seriously before though, only 3 in the arcades a couple of times. Is the PS2 port of 3 on PSN any good?

Picked up Axelay since it looked pretty neat and I liked the idea of using both vertical and horizontal scrolling levels. I'm really enjoying it, been playing it for a good 3 and a half hours straight! Can't get past stage 5 (the lava area). It doesn't help that I always lose a ton of lives/continues on the previous level. Being able to take 3 bullets but only 1 collision/missile is throwing me off and a little frustrating, though I shouldn't complain since most shmups only allow one hit, right? From the different options I have available/get to I tend to prefer 2, 1, 2.

So, I'm not very familiar with shmups at all. The only one I've played extensively was Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth (the one on N64) when I was a kid. After winning a contest by getting the high score on Neo XYX, I've been really in the mood to play some more shmups. I plan on checking out a lot of the games listed in the OP, but does anyone have any recommendations for games similar to Star Soldier or Axelay?

What other systems do you own? Unfortunately, neither SNES nor N64 are great for shooting games. Of what's available I'd recommended Space Megaforce/Super Aleste on SNES. It's a good shooter and programmed really well so it doesn't suffer from frequent slowdown like most SNES shooters.

Out of all of the systems mentioned in the second post of this thread, I have everything minus a Saturn.

Maybe I should be keeping my expectations in check, but I'm really looking forward to the Game Center Love Plus Pengo set coming out next week. Anyone else picking it up? I've been trying to get a friend into STGs lately ("they're impossible, blah, blah, blah") and I'm thinking the skill challenges and vs. mode might be a cool start. We've also been playing some four-player PuyoPuyo vs. Tetris at a friend's and I'm hoping the updated Pengo could be fun, too.

Thanks. Umm, nothing in particular (I can't think of anything 2D that's been released. That Mercenary Kings game?). I was just hoping they'd work for future reference, really. Signs aren't too promising after sixteen-bit's post, though.

Sorry for getting back so late, just got finished trying it out, does not work at all. Bit surprising, sine it works flawlessly on the PS3.

Not actually that important
Man, Shooting Love 10th Anniversary is soooooo good.
I'm super glad I've bought it, 30€ well spent. One of my fav shmups disc in my X360 collection!

Congratulations, you really deserve it!
Hi guys and girls. I'm working on a shooter at the moment and I would like to ask shooter fans what their thoughts are on score multipliers. For instance, would you prefer to lose your multiplier after not hitting an enemy within a certain time period, or only when you are hit yourself? Would appreciate any input.

Both mechanics can work well, so long as enemy placements are designed to suit whichever direction you take. For example, if the multiplier times out then enemies should be placed in a way that it is possible to carry a chain throughout the entire stage.

Ah good point. This is a manic dogfighting shooter and the enemies are very random so I guess losing multiplier on getting hit would be better. But then again I think people will get hit quite a bit. I suppose another way to do it would be to keep your multiplier if you don't get hit within a certain time period after getting it.

So your game has randomized enemy placements? That's a lot harder to pull off in a fair way. Most use predetermined enemy placements, as it both guarantees the game is as fair as the patterns and allows for scoring consistency between runs.

Well it's not random per say, but it's a 360 degree shooter and enemies have freedom of movement

Sounds like you want to have a lifebar?

Yeah, it will definitely have a lifebar.
And that's sadly where I pretty much lose all interest. That (along with the rest of how you've been describing your game) for me crosses the line that splits STGs and "Euroshmups", which is not a genre I care for.

You may want to browse the Development forum on Shmups (specifically, this thread) to see why mechanics like that are typically frowned upon by many fans of the genre.

By that definition, Deathsmiles a euroshmup, right?
It's more the whole of how he's describing his game turning me off rather than the life bar alone (and I wouldn't call DS's half-hits a life bar per se; it behaves identically to other Cave games in regard to bullet hits, and just gives a little cushion to allow for enemy collisions).

Well, it's part of the mechanics. It probably won't be for everyone cause it's definitely not a real traditional shooter. It will be interesting to get some thoughts on the game in the future. That's a good link too, thanks.

i.e. Guwange which is one of my favorite lifebar-esque kind of games :)
