Digital Foundry: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Face-Off (PS3/PS4/PC)

they just started the account

I can see that, and I wasn't expecting them to do comparisons of like Pharos Sirus..But Sastasha doesn't take that long to unlock, and when considering that most of your time will be spent in dungeons, even that information would be nice to have.

The framerate video clearly show it dropping all over the place, in small fights and even out of combat with not much going on.

I'm not even disagreeing or arguing with you. I am stating that like the 720p subject, its performance in enclosed dungeons/etc would also be good information to know regardless.

The game has AF on PS4. It's very noticieable if you come from the PS3 version, it's one of the biggest improvements I'd say. But it's not 16x like on PC,

If you mean bilinear and trilinear filtering of course.

No, I mean AF. GTA 5 seems to have a good AF on ps3 from what I see. Of course, we are not talking of incredible high AF (dynamic more of the times) but even Bioshock infinite seems enough good to me.

This anisotropic filtering issue on the PS4 is getting weird.
What issue? It says it is lower, not nonexistent like some other games. The issue you are talking about is when they don't use it at all like Thief and Strider.

Plug in a USB keyboard, or hook up a wireless one.

Works beautifully.

I can back that up. I actually have my PS4 running to my monitor right now in preference to the tv, so during beta, I was actually playing with pad on PS4, at my desk with monitor, while simulataneously using keyboard for chat/typing/map screen navigation. Worked like a charm. My kbm has one of those one dongle for both thingyies so I just stuck it in the PS4 which is in the opposite corner of the room and voila.

Yeah you're right - I was mistaken in thinking it was just greatly reduced in comparison to the XB1 and PC version for Thief and lumped them together.

It's still odd that they're not going full 16x.

Frame rate is pretty much all over the place for me (ps4). Dungeons fare much better since it's a more closed env/lower player count.

If you want to play with a controller on PC, remember it's not the same as on ps4 since the touchpad acts exactly like a mouse would. You'll be missing that handy feature.

No the PC version used the controller and mouse at the same time.

I just resubbed, but haven't had the chance to play it yet. I'm dreading importing (screencaps to actual input) all my PC>PS4 macros and gearsets. All of that shit should be stored server-side for a cross-platform game.

More to the point, its the most polished theme-park MMORPG to hit the market in years. Kind of like a WOW+++. Don't expect much more than a gear-grind come endgame though. They have PVP in the game now too, but its a token effort. No doubt more content is coming over time. Definitely a nice time-waster for a few months until you get burned out or bored. And man, is it ever pretty. Glorious to look at.

In 1080p on PS4 the only FPS dips you'll really see is when you hit up a crazy-full FATE. But even with a SLI GPU setup I still get that in online games. They did a spectacular job with the PS4 port.
It's not even two years old yet though, is it? I mean, I know version 1.0 launched in 2010, but didn't ARR launch last year?

So, do I ever actually have to speak with people or can it be just text chat in the game? I'm interested in playing it but don't want to have to talk to people or have dedicated parties.

did anybody run tests for the PS4 version comparing between 720p/1080p? any performance differences?

it's just text chat for 99% of the game. sometimes for the last 1% high end content people demand voice chat.

That framerate seems to be all over the place. It's too bad though that there aren't any similar FPS comparisons on on similar PC set-ups; only benchmark results.

You don't have to chat I guess. But typing without a keyboard is horrendous.

I usually only play in a party with my friends list (voice chat), typing to randoms is pretty much terrible.

I'm just saying if you want to comfy couch game with a controller, you'll be missing the TouchPad functionality of the ps4 version. Our you could do the akward shit your taking about.

How would having a wireless mouse next to you be more awkward than a baby touch pad?

I switched 720p on in limsa when the fps was probably around 30. Didn't notice an increase at all. If that's accurate, it could mean that it's the processor that's limiting things rather than the gpu.

What is up with AF and PS4 releases? Maybe the SDK has it on 2X by default and some just forget to change it?

Haha wow I just scrolled to the end of this thread and was about to post this exact question till I saw your post.

Game after game is showing significant AF downgrades on PS4 and I'm also curious as to why that is.

Regarding performance in FATEs (public battles with large player groups), you can disable or limit the spell effects of other players to improve performance.

Would have been nice if DF had tested this setting to see how much of a difference full versus limited versus disabled makes.

hardware wise it makes no sense. that is one area where having better ram would help.

I am guessing it is with their implementation of opengl?

Thanks for bringing this up. Possible to use DS4 on PC?

the touch pad really doesn't work well as a mouse pointer though.

I would suggest one of these if you need mouse functionality.. I believe the ps4 can use it.. pretty sure the ps3 can.

I only ever needed a mouse to redo my hud. For everything else, the back button on my 360 controller has been doing a stellar job of cycling through.

Or you could just use the PS4 controller on the PC and use the touchpad.

Most of the content is recycled from 1.0, actually. I was an original XIV player and a lot of the stuff they've 'added' - Good King Moggle Mog, for example - is just recycled content rebranded as new.

So no, they haven't added that much. And still have a ways to go. I'm also not a fan of this "give a game years and it will have plenty of content." Well, yes, reason would dictate that is the case with MMORPGs. But they should start out of the gate with much more than they do, not fly by the logic that 'we'll make the real game over time'. All themepark MMORPGs are guilty of this, really. That's why we need more with user-generated or randomly-generated variables. Takes a great deal of strain off the devs too. If someone figures out a proper way to do that sort of content one day, that is. EQN might be that game, but we'll have to wait and see.

Until then, XIV is a blast, but if you're even a moderate player (1-3 hours/ per night) you could get bored fast. The instance grind and endgame really is a special kind of tedious too.

That's my experience with the game as well. It drops even when there's nothing going on. Not that it really bothers me tho. I'm having an effin' blast with the game.

PS4 seems a bit rough around the edges but it's still a good version.

It dropped to 20-26 fps just from walking outside Ul'dah.

Meh, seems like they just straight ported the PC version, which is good looking for an MMO I suppose but that's about it.

Wait, every console game has 16x AF except the PS4? Do you have a list of games and the way the AF level was derived?

I tried the PS4 beta and enjoyed it, it's just hard/impossible to talk to other players with a controller, so I'd probably rather play it on a PC. Unfortunately I don't have one.

Keyboards are £1 from Asda. I assume they are similarly priced in the US at Walmart.
