Nintendo not having an E3 press conference for the second year in a row

This doesn't mean they're skipping E3, but unfortunately, many people judge E3 based on press conferences alone. Nintendo should be trying to make themselves more visible than ever. What a boneheaded decision.

PLAY NINTENDO: NEW GAMES, NEW EVENTS AND LIVE, NONSTOP PROGRAMMING ON TAP FOR E3 2014

Super Smash Bros. Tournament Highlights Nintendo’s E3 Approach

REDMOND, Wash., April 29, 2014 – Over the last few years, Nintendo has repeatedly reinvented its approach to E3 by creating unique ways to break news and get fans at home involved in the fun, while also offering great experiences for on-site attendees. That mission continues in 2014 as Nintendo offers a series of new channels to communicate news directly to its key audiences, including fans, media, analysts, investors and business partners. This includes a new format for unveiling news: the Nintendo Digital Event; a Super Smash Bros. tournament; a full slate of live, in-depth game demos from the Nintendo booth; and an opportunity for fans to play Super Smash Bros. for Wii U for the first time at their local Best Buy.

"We demonstrated last year that we are never afraid to reinvent a proven tactic or to break completely new ground if we believe it will provide the best experience for our fans, followers and partners," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's president and chief operating officer. "So, whether you're attending E3 in person or joining online, there's an amazing lineup of games, experiences and events coming your way."

At E3 2014, Nintendo will offer four unique experiences, all under the unifying banner of "Play Nintendo."

Super Smash Bros. Invitational
2014 will see the arrival of not one, but two new Super Smash Bros. games: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. To commemorate this occasion, Nintendo is inviting 16 highly skilled Super Smash Bros. players to the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles to compete in a Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament. Thousands of fans in the audience and countless more watching a live stream online will see new Super Smash Bros. characters clash with existing favorites in action for the first time. More important than declaring a winner, however, this event is a celebration of all things Super Smash Bros., and a great way for new and veteran fans to take part in a tribute to this legendary franchise. More information about the 16 invited participants in the tournament, the identity of the announcers, and how fans of the franchise can view the tournament in person and via webcast, will be communicated shortly.

Nintendo Digital Event
Every year, Nintendo looks for the best way to show its games and share its news with fans, media and other key audiences. In 2013, Nintendo decided to forgo a traditional press conference and use a video – in that case a Nintendo Direct – to share its news from E3. The company is building on that approach at E3 2014 with the "Nintendo Digital Event," a new kind of video program that will reveal and provide further detail about the gaming experiences on the way for Nintendo platforms in 2014 and beyond. The Nintendo Digital Event will air at 9 a.m. PT on Tuesday, June 10.

Nintendo Treehouse: Live @ E3
This year, Nintendo will offer fans a deeper look at Nintendo's biggest games of E3, with information directly from the source. The "Treehouse," the Product Development department at Nintendo of America, will provide in-depth game demos live and unscripted from Nintendo's booth. This new program will be live streamed during all hours of the E3 show. Fans can get settled in, open their browsers and experience the Nintendo games at E3 like never before.

Super Smash Bros. Smash Fest @ Best Buy
In 2013, Nintendo broke new ground by expanding its E3 activities outside of the walls of the Los Angeles Convention Center and letting fans play some of the games being played on the show floor at participating Best Buy stores. The partnership between Nintendo and Best Buy continues in 2014 and will mark the first time around the world that fans have had the opportunity to get their hands on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Man I guess having a live crowd means that much to people.

Although I hope this doesn't mean they have nothing unannounced to show.

I could understand it somehow last year, when they wouldn't get much attention anyway because of the two new consoles, but this year this really seems like a mistake.

A "digital event" potentially sounds better than a Nintendo Direct so I'll wait and see, but this sounds dumb.

It's a non-issue.

Pretty much. It's not like they don't have booths there.

If they announce 20 games though Direct, the lack of a conference is a complete non-story.

Of course, that's unlikely to happen, and if they underdeliver, it's going to be faulted on them.

I wish they would do both, honestly. It definitely hurts their image by staying exclusively digital as far as pre-E3 conferences go.

Out of curiosity, anyone know what the costs of setting up an E3 conference are?
I guess there would be renting the room, shipping in the screen, props, creating the script, etc.

Would have loved to see them try and round up some 3rd parties for a E3 show just to see who would pop up. I guess that ship has sailed until new hardware is ready (next year?)

Maybe to dedicated press, but mainstream will probably completely ignore Nintendo's existence again like they did last year

I heard they hired Sony´s cameraman and will only use U-stream. So quality confirmed...

(I heard nothing, I live on some isolated Islands way out nowhere)

Man I guess having a live crowd means that much to people.

yeah, I dont' get it either...quoting myself from the oher thread:

I don't want to sound mean at all, but can I ask you (and others) why?
I mean: it's not that we usually are there at the live conf: we watch a video with our PC/TV where they talk/present/announce games. Is it really SO important if it is a live event or a recorded video?
I understand that the Live event has crowd that can booooo or cheer, but for example a Direct could easily cut some pause, dead moment and so on, concentrating even more contents in the same timeframe.
Last here we had announcements for MK8, Smash, Mario3D, and DKTF, probably Zelda LBW and updates on many games with videos, and so on. It wasn't a "weaker" E3, to me.
The negativity came from the bad reception of Mario3D (that lasted until the second trailer shown later in the year) and from the fact that people wanted Retro's new game to be Metroid and not DK.
But that would have been the same in a Live conf, to me.

Just my two cents :)

I mean: I see people saying that they will miss hype from the media. So genuine question:

Is people upset because what matters is the media hype/buzz generated from the live invitation to gaming journalist, more than our actual experience (based on contents showed and announced, because both Live conf and Direct are enjoyed by our PC, right?)

Well, whatever a "Digital Event" is, they are at least not making a normal Direct again like last year. That's already an improvement, since the low budget approach of their Directs just isn't suited for an event like the E3 (at least that's my opinion).

Apart of that, I don't particularly care. Though, it is noticeable that the Direct last year definitely had a smaller effect on the press last year, simply because they tend to overlook everything that's not happening live in LA (understandably so, there's just too much stuff going on).

They haven't put on a good E3 press conference in years so this isn't a problem. They've proven that their pre-taped stuff can be just as effective, if not, more. Yeah, we lose the hype of having them on stage and stuff, but in the end were those conferences any good?

ghst

thanks for the laugh
i guess they want to skip the bit where they smile and tell the world about how well their consoles are doing. can't imagine why.

Unbelievable. Let's not market our struggling home console to the mainstream media. It's fucking brilliant.

Looks like Nintendo wants to continually be a major player in "Trivial Pursuit: Who Gives a Fuck Edition".

So is Reggie going to do another PLAY THE GAAAAME seminar?

Also, E3 is the biggest stage for videogames, the entire world has its eyes on LA those two days. It's the perfect oppertunity to present yourself and your games. E3 conferences are the talk of the town, and are discussed on every game/tech and often mainstream outlet around the world. Actively pulling out is an error in judgement.

After last year, there's no way I'm ever watching a conference again anyway.
Seriously boring shit with lame antics are just a waste of my time.
