I think lording yourself evilly over someone isn't inherently racist, we need a little more information than that. I have a "no thread poo pooing" policy that I'm now breaking. I hereby poo poo this thread. silly thread.

I don't know, why don't we wait until we have something actually substantial to talk about?

We literally don't know anything about this character outside of what he is wearing.

I don't see the racism. It's a medium, just like movies in book, telling a story, and this is the story. The character might be racist, but the box art itself, in my opinion, isn't. The box art just gives story details.

As for the gay villain: yes please. They aren't giving me any gay main characters to play with, maybe as well give us a fabulous villain to be mad/jelly at.

Yea and FC3's boxart had a native on it so that was racist too right?

People are always looking for something else to complain about, Far Cry 4 is just the flavor of the day.

I mean people are entitled to their opinions and all but man, the guy wearing purple is gay? Purple is the color of royalty, and also it looks cool as hell, so why are we already drawing conclusions?

Again, no hate to anyone, but just had to put in my two cents.

I dispair with twats pulling the race card yet again.

Can't say boo to a fucking ghost these days without some activist pulling an -ism.

I don't think people understand the concept of racism...

If I pick up a tank and conquer Venezuela and have the habitants as my slaves is that considerer racism? No, because they are slaves not because of their race but because they were the habitants of the place I just conquered with my freaking beautiful tank. It is not right, but it is not racism.

Racism is discriminations due to race.
Racism is actions, practices or beliefs, or social or political systems that consider different races to be ranked as inherently superior or inferior to each other, based on presumed shared inheritable traits, abilities, or qualities.

I couldn't help but feel concerned when I saw Far Cry 4's released art and turns out other people took other issues with it.

My initial thoughts on Far Cry 4's art, and how I hope the antagonist isn't gay

A few months after the Far Cry 3 writer said "we won’t see gay protagonist in AAA game for a while over sales fears" comes the announcement of Far Cry 4.

The moment I saw the picture below, I felt my heart sank. An evil character, wearing all purple, having an edgy stylish modelesque haircut, hand resting on a guys head...I instantly thought they could be making a gay antagonist.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with a gay antagonist, it worries me that it might not be done right. Also if the only time we have gay characters in games are main characters that are bad guys, what message does that send to people? All gay people are bad, or it will just fuel their hatred they already have towards gay people. I can see it now, people thinking "Finally, I can call a character in a game a faggot and he will actually be one."

Maybe I'm being pessimistic, or maybe I'm being fearful, heck maybe I'm stereotyping a bit myself (more so hoping they didn't use a stereotype), but I just wanted to voice my initial feelings on the matter.

Twitter reacts to Far Cry 4 art calling it racist

When I voiced my opinion on Twitter I had a few responses come in with other concerns:

After Veeren tweeted at Ubisoft a few people replied to him, and backed what he had said, including a PhD Candidate in Media Studies named Austin Walker. Austin also provided some advice to Ubisoft.

wow, where does it say the guy is gay? maybe it is you being judgmental suggesting that this is how a stereotypical gay person would look..
I did not have that thought once looking at the cover,

Oh no, not a comment by a PhD candidate. Ubisoft is done. The market is closed but I'm selling my shares ASAP.

They're gonna change this cool looking boxart now because some people aren't comfortable with themselves so they call it racist. I saw it and just went "Cool cover. New Far Cry game is good news!."

Others go.. "OMG THAT'S SO GAY AND THE WHITE MAN IS IN CONTROL!"

If everyone saw the world the same way as you did, and respected the same lines you respected we wouldn't have things like opinions. To me this is fun to watch the drama unfold. Just a shame Ubi will prob change the cover because of it.

So, gay antagonist isn't right but a heterosexual is.

This..is sexist.
That's not what parity means.

I'm with you, there shouldn't be gay people in video games! It just complicates things obvs

These people on Twitter know that even if the boxart depicts a racist villain, that doesn't mean the boxart itself is racist, right?

lol... so now we cant have gay people being evil in games since it sends bad message?

And you are thinking he is gay because he wears purple?

Then complaining about white guy over native?

You pretty much show everything that is wrong in gaming society right now. This need for perfect political correctness does not fit into any art form, including gaming.

I like how people are already outraged at absolutely nothing. Wait till you see the game. Soon people will start getting outraged by freaking titles.

Oh man, the only people to think that this is racist are probably racists themselves. I see two asian guys there, one seemingly pimped out and one guerilla. FFS I don't even see a gay character, just a pimp.

Some people just want to be offended so badly they will call a ladybug sexist.

Tothe op: the fact that you automatically associated his look with your assumption that he is gay makes you a hypocrite and part of the imaginary problem you made up in your head

Don't think it's racist at all. The antagonist may be racist, and that's what the box art is clearly showing - him trampling and destroying native culture and artwork, having a soldier or guerrilla fighter under his thumb (literally), lording over a country which he most likely doesn't care about or understand.

Stupid controversy. People can't really get the meaning behind that artwork? Just because it's depicting a possibly racist person (in a clearly negative light) doesn't mean it's endorsing racism.

Honestly doesn't seem that bad to me.

I don't see why a villain can't be gay or anything for that matter. As long as the reason they're labelled as evil/villainous is because of their actions and not sexuality/race, then there's not a problem there at all.

1. We don't know if the character is gay.
2. If he is gay, we still know nothing about him, his personality etc. just how he looks.
3. Some gay people do like to dress in a camp style and there's nothing wrong with this.
4. There's nothing racist about the picture.

Its not racist or homophobic you are just looking for something to complain about. Can we please keep political correctness and other crap out of video games.

I can see it now, people thinking "Finally, I can call a character in a game a faggot and he will actually be one."

I very much doubt anyone is thinking that. I'm sure there are a few real life bigot caricatures running around, but I imagine real bigots are thinking they'll skip the game altogether.

Anyway, the box looks fine to me but don't let that stop anyone being super pissed.

People wonder why we have the typical good looking beefy guy with a lame vanilla, cookie cutter story line time after time after time.

You get something slightly edgy, and people jump off the cliff with "I think it looks like this, let me voice my anger and frustration" before they know a single thing about the totality of the game.

You don't know the tone of the game, you don't know the tone of the character, and you don't know what happens during the story.

But from a picture we get portraying gay people as bad.
Racism and blah blah....

Give me a break OP....it's box art and far too early to be raising any kind of stink about it.
