Far Cry 4's art is racist and the antagonist is (potentially) gay

1. We don't know if the character is gay.
2. If he is gay, we still know nothing about him, his personality etc. just how he looks.
3. Some gay people do like to dress in a camp style and there's nothing wrong with this.
4. There's nothing racist about the picture.

Basically this.

It is just a boxart that shows a flamboyant character.

well IF the character is in fact white, and he is repressing a minority group that are native to that island, or of any minority group and it is in the game technically they are endorsing a white dominate society, almost like a white power trip so to speak, which is racist.

Yeah, just like when Quentin endorsed slavery in Django Unchained. Gotcha!

I'm starting to wish the guy in the purple could be the protagonist, but in any case I think this cover art is MILES fucking better than some 30-something quasi-bearded handsome white guy holding a gun, which is like 90% of game covers these days.

Oh lordy, I can understand people getting pissy about the box art but in-game is another issue.

If people are moaning about him being a white guy leading over a different race, good. If it pisses people off, this means it is a good start to a antagonist; from the box art alone, you can tell he is a "Bad Guy."

Now to the gay issue which is non-existent for the most part, we don't even know if the character is gay. The fact that people are making this off the basis that his suit is pink is silly enough. Nothing wrong with a "camp" villain, it is a characteristic that may have consumed the character and makes it a nice change of pace for western antagonists.

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
Was there a huge outcry when the villain in James Bond: Sky Fall was a white gay guy?

Honestly: just assuming a guy is gay cause he wears a purple suit is kinda wrong in itself

Personally I think it's a great piece of promo art and has me pretty interested to find out what the guy's deal is what the situation is. I'm prepared to wait until I play the actual game before I judge it.

My biggest problem with Far Cry 3, story wise is
the game lost focus halfway through when they killed off Vaas
. Hopefully they learn from this mistake.

I don't know about this. Then there will be an outcry when you shoot him dead in the final cut scene. Not to mention countless youtube videos filled with hateful comments

Honestly, that's going to happen either way. Whether he's gay, racist, both or neither. These are Youtube video comments we're talking about.

If he's a villian and the goal is to remove him, how is that racist (aside from the character himself being racist).

This is the kind of bullshit that kept comics in the 70's from talking about drugs being bad because mentioning drugs at all was somehow on par with advocacy... a story about racism being wrong can't NOT have a racist in it.

I have to agree with this statement. Would be fun to have such an off the wall character like that. Isnt that what far cry is about these days?

Also, what a knee jerk reaction thread to a single image. Reading soooooo much into it and normatively judging it before you know the context.

Heck, even if there were overt racism perhaps it could be integral to the story and be a great critique. You do not know...

My gut reaction is along these lines. An evil and flamboyant gay villain, handled smartly, who exploits the local population of another country for his own financial gains could be a really interesting character.

I am not going to state if he is/is not white, i was just merely trying to point out IF he was white that would be the reason why it could be considered racist

So the "white man's" motivation must be based on race because that's what white people do? How do you know that "white guy" isn't holding him down because he plays terrible video games?

The issue I see with the picture is it portrays the idea that these poor natives couldn't possibly defend themselves from the white oppressor, so some white knight has to come in and save them. Now if the protagonist is one of the native people, then this issue would not exist. Let's see which way ubi went with this...

How odd. Is 12 Years A Slave a racist movie for depicting racism?

If the game is thematically concerned with that content, then why would it be misguided to put it on the poster?

While there is nothing inherently wrong with a gay antagonist, it worries me that it might not be done right. Also if the only time we have gay characters in games are main characters that are bad guys, what message does that send to people? All gay people are bad, or it will just fuel their hatred they already have towards gay people. I can see it now, people thinking "Finally, I can call a character in a game a faggot and he will actually be one."

While I respect your opinion, and you're free to be offended by whatever you want, this is just asinine.

This is the same Ubisoft that tasked you with freeing slaves in AC4 and it's two DLC packages that had two black lead characters?

I think it's a little much to call it racist. Vaas wasn't a white dude, and his boxart was a white guy buried in sand, but no one said anything about that.

And it doesn't matter if the character is gay or not, at least not to me. What will matter is if he's a great villain or not and how well he'll use.

Unlike Vaas who was great until he died out in the first half. =(

My initial thoughts on Far Cry 4's art, and how I hope the antagonist isn't gay

A few months after the Far Cry 3 writer said "we won’t see gay protagonist in AAA game for a while over sales fears" comes the announcement of Far Cry 4.

The moment I saw the picture below, I felt my heart sank. An evil character, wearing all purple, having an edgy stylish modelesque haircut, hand resting on a guys head...I instantly thought they could be making a gay antagonist.

This could be said in regard to every antagonist in every game.
Are germans evil because they're depicted as evil in games? And russians? And black people? And white people?

Cut people some slack. Unless we're talking about a complete moron, I can't begin to imagine someone who'll think that gay people are evil because they fought a gay antagonist.

Twitter reacts to Far Cry 4 art calling it racist

When I voiced my opinion on Twitter I had a few responses come in with other concerns:

After Veeren tweeted at Ubisoft a few people replied to him, and backed what he had said, including a PhD Candidate in Media Studies named Austin Walker. Austin also provided some advice to Ubisoft.

Anthony Burch of Gearbox and lead writer of Borderlands 2 weighed in on the art as well.

Well, he's the bad guy. Doing bad things. I, uh, don't see the problem?
He's depicted as a racist that exploits natives because the artist want to hate him.

Yep. OP is a biased, race baiting ass - seeing racism all over the place.

Jumping to conclusions with no supporting evidence whatsoever. Raising a ruckus over said unsubstantiated p.o.v. and rallying the idiot rowd over nothing.

Congrats OP!

So much truth. What a shitty Op. Just the idea that people see this box art and think the things that are listed in that Op shows how some people have fucking scrambled eggs for brains.

The saddest part to me is that the "kinda white-looking guy" must be doing what he is to the other "not white-looking guy" because of... race.

Well of course, white people are evil, didn't you know? But honestly, people read into this stuff what they need to in order to drive their narrative. Obviously it's gotta be racist, obviously it's homophobic, and it's probably sexist too because that's what these people need it to be so they can cause an uproar where none is deserved.

I was trying to remember what that suit reminded me of....and sure it's not pink but....

Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson confirmed for Far Cry 4. They shall play the two antagonists who double up as the comic relief. They attempt to stop the protagonist by a series of overly elaborate traps, and shout at each other when they fail. In the end, the true villain is revealed to be James May, who was manipulating everything.

I don't see it as racist, but dark and tacky maybe even in poor taste.
But whatever, its a videogame and I know they need to shock and awe most of us just to keep our attention and moneys.

I hope this game looks even better then what they initially showed off for the Far Cry 3 ingame demonstrations.
They owe us.

What's wrong anyway if the premise indeed Gay from unknown native slaying abusive and racist landlord villain reign anyway, sound like good message to me.

But I know ubi never will cross that line.

We don't know who the protagonist is... so is kind of annoying getting angry before that.

OP's youtube channel has solidified my feeling that this thread is clickbait

Not sure what my YouTube channel has to do with anything. I have one channel that is zany characters and satire, and another that are let's plays mostly. What exactly am I getting clicks on here other than this thread?

Yeah, the guys hair is defiantly bleached. You can see the hair growing at the side is black. Also this is a guy who considers himself king of that country. The nose, eyes, and facial structure are similar to guy kneeling. The dude is Asian and not White. I bet you all a million bucks.

This is the most pedantic, deliberately obtuse, sensationally contrarian and borderline asinine thread I've seen on a while.

There's so little to objectively criticize about this whole thing, that it makes me think people like you, OP, ironically, are actually a sizable portion of the population that is holding true, transparent equality back from the claws of intolerance.

All I see is a snazzy dressed dude, who is probably a mastermind, holding control over the grunt force the kneeling dude belongs to. He is probably holding a grenade because charismatic evil dude told him to.

I also think it intends to show that he comes from a different place than the kneeling guy, someone who has come in and has taken control.

But hey...thats just me. I don't see racism, and if he is gay, so what? Don't have to be straight to be a hero or a villain.

Tomat

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
I understand being cautious about how they may portray a potentially gay dude in the game hoping it won't be stereotypical garbage, but I feel like you've jumped the gun here.

Pretty sure this threads proves that Ubisoft has accomplished exactly what they set out to do with this image. It worked for me at least, I'm definitely interested in finding out more about those two characters. I think the art is fantastic.

So let us look at this a second...

A white guy lording over a 'island native'?

Let us presume this is a bad dude... does it matter if he is white or black or any other colour under the sun? He is meant to be bad and lording over an oppressed regime.

In games you are meant to beat the bad guy... because he is a dick.

Darth Vader lorded over entire planets and was a douche. If we had pulled off the mask anf he was black instead of white or gay instead of straight, would it of mattered at all?

I think we are all too quick to call anything racist or sexist nowadays.
