Far Cry 4's art is racist and the antagonist is (potentially) gay

It's been covered a bunch in this thread, but really OP?! A purple suit and blonde hair makes a dude gay? I think you drastically misunderstand homosexuality—it's not about what you where but who you sleep with/love.

As an openly bisexual (if we must label it) man with a boyfriend, I'd like to think I know about gay dudes. I'm just saying it looks like they created a character that leans towards being a gay stereotype from looks alone.

So the fact that a white villain may subjugate other races in a demonstration of his villainy makes a game racist?

And gays can never be villainous ever? All depictions of them must be flawless and heroic?

OP avoids answering any serious questions about his crazy OP, but instead replies to some very random and OT comments.

What a great thread.

Yes the guy in the cover does look like gay, why are people afraid admetting so? Is it now ofensive calling a gay person gay?

Oh and that cover is really bad "In My Opnion"
There is no such thing as "look like gay". The guy in the cover looks like a guy dressed in pink, nothing more.

Calling a game racist for featuring a racist antagonist is akin to calling a game anti-Semitic for featuring Nazis.

The logic presented by the OP is actually really fascinating:

  • By portraying an antagonist as racist, the game is positively reflecting on racism.
  • But, by portraying an antagonist as gay, the game is negatively reflecting on homosexuality
.
That doesn't add up to me. Seems like there's a lot of baggage being dragged in to the evaluation of what message the game may or may not be making.

Yep. There's no argument here. He looks gay on a stereotypical level. From his hair and purple clothes, his ruffled shirt and even the way he holds his left wrist.

They just went about it the wrong way.

The imagery of a subservient "native" kneeling for the white man is definitely undesirable in this day and age. You'd better bring some nuance or underlying meaning to supplement this imagery or you will be rightfully frowned upon. One must be very ignorant to not understand this.

This controversy is one big "meh". In Far Cry 3, you burned a pot field, killed some jungle animals to make pouches and had sex with some kind of hot goddess. I never noticed those other undertones even existed, and I put 100 hours into that game. Whatever. If a gay guy makes a good antagonist so be it. Dr. Claw was gay.

Dunno if gay, but to me it seems to stereotype of a flamboyant white European controling and destroying (look where he is sit) another non white nation.

He doesn't look like a gay stereotype so much as he looks like a flamboyant bastard.

A gay stereotype? If the character turns out to be gay, how should he dress? How should he dress so YOU aren't offended?

I do not understand why people are in a uproar over a racist villian, isn't that the point of a villian? To be antagonistic and to represent something evil and something the player is against?

Sorry, but there is NO proof that the antagonist is gay, there is NO proof that he is racist, and there is NO proof that he is the antagonist. This thread is discriminating towards antagonists. Aren't protagonists allowed to smirk a little, reign over things, and have RPGs (They always do SOME degree of all three)?

Ubisoft wasn't kidding when they said Far Cry would potentially be a franschise selling 22+ million units.

I mean, day one and there's already controversy without knowing even putting posters on the streets? HOT DAMN MARKETING GENIUSES

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
What I personally find much more problematic is the glorification of domestic violence that is clearly shown on this one picture. Also, if you look closely you can see that the protagonist is a scientologist which I find very problematic indeed.

Everything is racist today. Everything is bad, everything is offensive.
People need to get that stick out of their ass and stop being offended by every little thing.
I think they are reading to much into this picture.

One must be very angry and judgumental before actually waiting to see how the actual game manages it

When I saw the character the first thing I thought of was flamboyant, rich (probably crazy) European (scandanavian?) bond villian type. Though I guess if you think all gays dress in loud pink suits I can see how you can think he is automatically gay.

I hate how people always label pink or a certain stance/mannerisms as gay.

TBH I think the worst thing about this thread is the assumption that a man wearing pink is gay.
This. If you see a guy with black skin you can assume he is black. Homosexuality doesn't have any identifiers like that. Yeah, there are those out there that like to wear flamboyant clothes or speak in a quirky way but there are also so many who, surprise surprise, dress and act "straight".

Makes you wonder how many people are actually offended and how many people act offended because they think they are suppose to be offended.

I have a few gay friends who dress and behave in much the same way. Why can't a video game character be portrayed like that if many real people choose to portray themselves like that? Why couldn't a video game character be even more flamboyant than the Far Cry dude? Some people are just flamboyant, gay or not. Why do game devs have to pretend that such people do not exist?

So what if the antagonist is gay? I thought the internet was pro-more gay representation in video games? Or am I missing something here?

Also, I don't really see the racism at all. It's only two guys in the boxart. If he was like sitting on a throne with a bunch of HImalayan natives bowing to him, that'd be a completely different story. Everything is racist nowadays, though, so I'm not sure what to think of it.

Yeah, I thought of commenting on the logical inconsistency myself, but you got it covered.
