SSF4: AE transition from GFWL to Steamworks is a complete mess

Ok, had more time with it now and yeah, it's a mess. The waiting for online opponent message in the middle of a match. Buggy audio, weird lag spikes. Things need fixin. In all the years playing this game, I've never had it where I back out of my own lobby, look up other lobbies and see my lobby still up...after multiple refreshes.

I've had a fine experience with the new update, the connection issue box tends to pop up a bit during a match but that is mostly due to the fact my friend's internet has been going out 5 times an hour recently.

Not being able to turn off my mic is annoying though.

Is anyone else having problems with the DS4?

I haven't had any issues with online matches though other than mics.

I sucked six dicks to get this tag.
Been saying all this since release of the steamworks patch. Thank god I kept a secondary GFWL install(there are still people playing on GFWL version) and a install that converted to steamworks. Technically not promoting piracy if you guys bought a GFWL key for the steam redemption, but you guys can download a torrent of the GFWL version and register your gfwl key to your xbl/gfwl account if you haven't already and it still works like a charm and auto downloads the last AE gfwl patch and everything.

Not even caring about PC release anymore tbh until Ultra releases for in August. Ultra coming out Tuesday on PS3 gotta switch back to that laggy ass version.

Gonna have to do a secondary GFWL install if I want to play. I thought we were gonna get along Steamworks :(

What is killing me the most is the announcer. I don't remember it being that prominent. I don't remember the announcer talking at all during a match.

Do a basic LP, LP,MP,Hadouken

"I'VE NEVER SEEN A COMBO THAT INTENSE!"

Round starts, 1 jab lands 3 seconds in

"HOW LONG WILL THIS GO ON?!!?"

Completely anecdotal: I'm playing with someone on the other end of the country (US here) and it's pretty serviceable. We both suck so much that I don't know if the lag is bad enough to really affect advanced gameplay, but basic button mashing for me has been fine so far. No "waiting for opponents" or disconnects or anything like that.

That said, though, the lack of mic mute is horrid and should go away.

Seems inconsistent. One of my friends had the same thing I had where achievements would pop up for, say, 100 ranked wins when he fought one match but the similar Endless achievements stayed locked.

Seems strange.
It's because it copies over your save file from GFWL version. So all your stats are saved

Yeah it is pretty buggy right now. It also takes much longer to join a game than it did in GFWL, usually have to wait 10-20 seconds now while it says "connecting to opponent" whereas in GFWL it was almost instant.

Well for anyone having problems connecting to other persons, I changed the steam server before I booted AE and that took care of it, I'm in the Caribbean, but I checked a US server closer to me which was Florida, I played many matches with persons all over the world.

Impressions:

a:) There seems to be less input lag in this version over that of gfwl, my moves just comes out crisply, sometimes under gfwl, I could have sworn I was playing in molasses even when there wasn't any substantial internet lag.

b:) Some connections will still be laggy, at worse you will get many interruptions (waiting for the player), it takes you out of it a bit, so hopefully they improve things there. I've also noticed slowdown whilst playing arcade mode waiting for ranked matches, the same used to happen to me under gfwl.

c:) Everybody has a mic on Steam it seems, so I can hear the opponents beating on their sticks very loudly or in other cases, persons talking trash and spewing vulgarities mid match. (A guy was so pissed off, that he was talking trash mid match, said I could not play sf, he got bodied first round and I was just about to perfect him the second round, he ragequitted just before the K.O)

Thing is, I can't message that guy and say (gg, lol) or anything, it's a very vital part of competitive fighting games online. As it is, you're just not connected to the persons you play online, there's no list of persons you just played or an easy way to connect to them. Say what you want of gfwl, but that is such a great feature.

Overall, when the connection was solid, it felt better due to less input lag in my opinion, maybe it's due to the absence of the gfwl overlay and it's resident features. The benchmark also seems to run at a higher clip as opposed to gfwl as well, hopefully they sort out the kinks, but it's certainly not as bad as I thought it was on first use.

It's odd that you mention that. AE doesn't make use of the recently played with list on Steam at all. Which is weird. Well if you remember the person's name and their profile is set up for it you can go leave a comment on their profile page? I dunno. Still not as easy/good as GFWL for that though, I agree.

Well I haven't played many games on steam, so I'm not too familiar with it's messaging system etc...It's good to know that they have a recently played list though, so maybe they will incorporate that feature into SF Steam come the next patch or maybe for Ultra.

Another thing I noticed, I use a PS3 controller on my PC to play SF, under GFWL I had to use the enter key on my keyboard to get to the SF menu, under steam I can now use the controller's start button to get to the menu.

Been working fine for me, right click on a friends name on steam, invite and 30 sec later we're playing.
Haven't really experienced any lag other than the inability to mute your microphone and the announcer seems really eager to yell about everything.

Anyone with audio stuttering have any ideas on a fix?

Are they basically cramming Steamworks into a GFWL-shaped hole? I imagine the transition will take a little time and work; best to deal with these problems now rather than wait until Ultra drops.

*gets "Waiting for other players" literally every second during a match*

...Wow, and I thought people were exaggerating. Hopefully this gets patched quickly.

My online experience didn't change. Got rekt swiftly and throughly, no connection errors. If anything I got less stuttering than with GfWL.

Thank god for that. So sick of ragemail.
Well, I do get lots of rage mail, ha ha... I usually make light of it though. I've met all types of characters online actually, had a few exchanges with some, tried to reason with some but I would never send a salty message to anyone after a loss, seems to be a trend for quite a few sf players out there though. I must say, some of the saltiest players I've come across are charged character players, especially bison players for some strange reason.

I've noticed this happens more when I'm playing someone who has a mic hooked up. Seems like the constant sound lags the match out.

Hopefully what they learn from this release they can apply to Ultra and future GFWL removals, Dead Rising, RE5, and Lost Planet 2 all have online play.

It seems rather obvious that the current Arcade Edition netcode will be the Ultra netcode once they get the bugs ironed out. This is sort of the Ultra Beta netcode, most likely.

I got it yesterday, in the sale. I cant even make the thing full screen. Am i being stupid???

Cheers

Wish I'd just waited for the full 360 version but I like building my steam collection

No, you're not. I had that problem too and had to look up the Alt+Enter solution. Pretty dumb omission from the settings menu (window > fullscreen).

There's no region lock, I'm in Mexico and I've been playing with Japanese people. Maybe it got fixed real quick? The true crime is absurdly laggy matches indeed :( Please fix it, it was so great before...

The microphone thing is funny because I always expect people to insult my spammy Rose, but it hasn't happened yet.

How is the population for SF4 these days on PC? Transitioned to primarily a PC gamer and currently debating whether to jump back into Ultra for 360 or just wait it out for the PC release. Online player only on the east coast.

Is it me or there are tons of new players now? I used to know most people I came across, but not now. Actually, I don't see too many familiar faces.

Steam Profile name (that can be changed) is used in Steamworks. Gamertags aren't the same.

Also a LOT of people were waiting for GfWL to die.

Well, one of the major bugs in GfWL that still isn't fixed is that the replay channel "filters"/character filters (Alpha, Bosses, etc) is still busted. Can sit there for 5+ minutes waiting for "now loading" to load replays of characters and no dice.

I'd rather they axe that and give me filtering options for age and per character in "new replays" since at least that and the replay list work. :/

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
that update is to "ae2swan" branch which is private and it's probably the Ultra DLC upgrade.

Of course it's private. "Public" is the build that Steam downloads by default, so developers have to make separate branches for patches. Also, it's not the Ultra upgrade -- it is completely impossible for Capcom to turn the SSF4:AE app into SSF4:U on a per-user basis, so existing owners of SSF4:AE will just be given a loyalty discount (that is to say Ultra will be a separate listing in your Steam library). Think Human Revolution -> Human Revolution: Director's Cut.

I'm more saddened that searching by same skill set ends me up with wildly differing results. I suck at SF and am trying to get better so it's weird.

Well, I'm basing this off of a few games played with one dude, but after this update I was prompted for, the game ran smooth as silk.

Yup, same for me in my dozen or so matches tonight. I didn't get any overseas opponents though (just US and Canada), so I can't comment on how that would go. I'd imagine it would still be pretty okay but I can't say for sure. I also didn't get any more offline lag/frameloss that the game had after the steam patch.

Now we need the game to use the recently played with list and give us an option to mute our own mics.

Well, looks like they removed the region lock and added an option for voice chat volume in the audio page.

But the netcode still isn't as good as the GFWL version.
