predictions for today

SKorea team is pretty bad, they're worse than Japan and they lost to that bad Iran team in Seoul in qualifiers.

I'd go with RUS 2 - SK 0

Belgium looking great, I've no idea about Algeria. 3-1 or something.

BRA v MEX 3-1 too.

I think it's inevitable that the U.S. will win a World Cup within the next 30 years. The sport is gaining a lot of popularity here and more and more parents will put there kids into soccer.

We're a country of 300 Million with the possibility of the best training and facilities in the world.

BTW how did China a country of 1 Billion not make the World Cup?

I don't know about that. I hope football grows in the US but winning it is still far away I think.

China lol.

Why forced? They have one of the most talented teams in Brazil, look at names like Courtois, Kompany, Witsel, Hazard, De Bruyne and Lukaku. They did a great job in the qualifiers. It's only logical people are hyped, now is the time to prove they are worth the hype. (And I'm sure they will)
A lot of these "good" teams have been flopping pretty bad so far, so I'm not convinced yet, hopefully they show their worth today!

USA still has a long way to go in terms of our approach towards training our youth I believe.

I remember reading an article from an MLS executive who is responsible for minimum MLS play quality and he was talking about how in America there is a mentality of driving kids 4 hours each way to play a game or two on the weekend when all that time should be spent training and executing drills. I believe that little things like that do add up and it might take an entire generation to get everyone on board.

Belgian journalists are showing a lot of confidence, which isn't the norm for Belgium. There would be huge meltdowns if Belgium fails.

Dutchies will understand.

I tried my best translating it but I reckon the joke is completely lost then :p

It's about the boring game that was Iran vs. Nigeria. The header says "This is the moment you can tell the boys apart from the men". Dude on the left says he skipped the Iran game at which his co-worker says he's a pussy and should sit at the womens table.

Today's predictions:

- missing the first half of BEL-ALG. The fact that Belgium play four centre backs in defence could hamper them against the likes of Feghouli (even if Germany and Italy succeeded). Kompany and Vertonghen are both coming off shaky years, and Vermaelen and Alderweireld have been riding the bench most of the year. They're there to take advantage of, just depends whether Algeria have the quality to do it. Their midfield is extremely goalshy - Fellaini didn't score for United all year, Defour isn't a goal scorer, and Dembele is surprisingly shot shy for a converted striker. Much rests on Lukaku and his ability to bring Hazard and Mirallas into the game like Benteke could. 2-1 Belgium.

- BRA-MEX could be fun. I think we'll see Mexico play on the counter a lot more; understandably so given the gulf in class between Brazil and Cameroon. Would start Hernandez today and keep him on David Luiz's shoulder. Got a feeling Brazil will have a tough time breaking down a team that won't keep the ball as much as Croatia. Someone with a bit more inventiveness - Hernanes perhaps - might be a better choice in the middle. 2-1 Brazil.

- RUS-SKR, not really sure what to expect from this. Would argue that Son is the stand out attacking player, but that may not be enough to trouble an organised Russian back line. And despite the likes of Kerzhakov being relatively goalshy and Shirokov being absent, Russia may struggle to beat a team that they really should be. If Dzagoev starts like Svia mentioned, they may have an edge that they were desperately lacking. 2-0 Russia.

does anyone else find it annoying when people refer to their national teams as "we" and "us" even though its like the only soccer game they've watched in 4 years?

people bust their ass every day on school, work, family, etc... what's so bad about having a temporary release and trying to be apart of something larger than yourself for pure joy and entertainment??

I'm thinking the match against Algeria isn't gonna be that easy for Belgium.

On paper Belgium has the far better players, but I've seen quite a few of Belgium's matches over the last few years (World Cup qualifiers, friendlies, etc) and I was never really impressed by how they played together as a team.

Algeria on the other hand will be very passionate, they are representing North Africa and the Arab world at this World Cup and they are actually pretty good as a team.. Feghouli is especially skilled, but I think their team spirit is what may help them get a good result against Belgium.

I wish Belgium the best though.. I'm Dutch and Belgians are our homies. XD

On the other hand, I'm also half Moroccan so I kinda feel Algeria is representing all us North Africans.. I love their national anthem, it's one of the best imo.. and they brought forth the singer Khaled so they are awesome for that alone. XD

So I'm a complete and utter novice when it comes to soccer football (as well as pretty much every other sport on the planet). But the hype surrounding the WC has peaked my interest, so I though that I'd use today as a test of sorts to see if I could get into it. So here's an analysis of today's games from me; an American who doesn't particularly care for sports and hasn't sat down to watch a game of soccer football since...ever?

Germany vs. Portugal- I was rooting for Germany in this one, mostly because (between the two) I'm more invested in them since I took four years of German in high school and like Germany as a country. I know absolutely nothing about Portugal or its team, other than apparently that Pepe guy has a history of being an asshole? Either way, that was a fun game to watch. That headbutt was ridiculous.

Iran vs. Nigeria - Well, this was a snooze-fest. That random camera shot of the blonde girl in the audience was easily the highlight. I wasn't rooting for one team over the other so I was ready for either to win, but the game kind of went nowhere.

US vs. Ghana - Obviously I was rooting for my home team, and was glad to see them pull out the win near the end. I was amazed at how much time Ghana had control of the ball and yet kept missing the goal by a country-mile. It was kind of sad to see their players who clearly knew what they were doing continuously blow it. From what I could tell, the US got pretty damn lucky at multiple points during the game. Overall it was very enjoyable to watch though.

I have to say though, the highlight throughout the day was reading this thread while watching the matches. The commentary being provided by all of you made the games much easier to watch (pointing out which players were typically shitty/awesome/etc and what were good/bad calls by the refs). This whole day has been a pretty good learning experience as far as understanding the rules of the game too (as well as how the World Cup works). By the time the US/Ghana match began I found myself actually explaining some of the rules of football to my girlfriend, rules that I had only learned earlier in the day :lol

I'm definitely hooked, looking forward to watching the games tomorrow.
This is incredibly cool haha

I'm glad you're enjoying the sport mate! Next up: picking a football club ;))

Just because they have players recognisable to EPL fans doesn't mean they are good.

I've seen a few Belgium games and they have been disjointed at best; not much team spirit there for mine.

Lol not much team spirit, that's so untrue. The whole basis of the Belgian team is teamspirit. It's the thing that Wilmots hammers the most on, play as a team. I think a few will be surprised by the Belgian team

Go Belgium! You have no idea how much everyone is looking forward to this game here... 02 was our last WC and with this team, the hope and hype is huge. We should at least make it to the second round. If not, the disappointment wil be big.

There used to be little excitement for matches of the national team, but that turned around completely in the last years.
