Go Belgium! You have no idea how much everyone is looking forward to this game here... 02 was our last WC and with this team, the hope and hype is huge. We should at least make it to the second round. If not, the disappointment wil be big.

There used to be little excitement for matches of the national team, but that turned around completely in the last years.

Have fun tonight! I noticed the World Cup hype was real when I was in Antwerp last week. I got Belgium flag goggles at the quick with my meal even :p

So I'm a complete and utter novice when it comes to soccer football (as well as pretty much every other sport on the planet). But the hype surrounding the WC has peaked my interest, so I though that I'd use today as a test of sorts to see if I could get into it. So here's an analysis of today's games from me; an American who doesn't particularly care for sports and hasn't sat down to watch a game of soccer football since...ever?

Germany vs. Portugal- I was rooting for Germany in this one, mostly because (between the two) I'm more invested in them since I took four years of German in high school and like Germany as a country. I know absolutely nothing about Portugal or its team, other than apparently that Pepe guy has a history of being an asshole? Either way, that was a fun game to watch. That headbutt was ridiculous.

Iran vs. Nigeria - Well, this was a snooze-fest. That random camera shot of the blonde girl in the audience was easily the highlight. I wasn't rooting for one team over the other so I was ready for either to win, but the game kind of went nowhere.

US vs. Ghana - Obviously I was rooting for my home team, and was glad to see them pull out the win near the end. I was amazed at how much time Ghana had control of the ball and yet kept missing the goal by a country-mile. It was kind of sad to see their players who clearly knew what they were doing continuously blow it. From what I could tell, the US got pretty damn lucky at multiple points during the game. Overall it was very enjoyable to watch though.

I have to say though, the highlight throughout the day was reading this thread while watching the matches. The commentary being provided by all of you made the games much easier to watch (pointing out which players were typically shitty/awesome/etc and what were good/bad calls by the refs). This whole day has been a pretty good learning experience as far as understanding the rules of the game too (as well as how the World Cup works). By the time the US/Ghana match began I found myself actually explaining some of the rules of football to my girlfriend, rules that I had only learned earlier in the day :lol

I'm definitely hooked, looking forward to watching the games tomorrow.

Missed these two cause of sleeping. Haha awesome.

The hype is... unreal. Flags everywhere, no one shuts up about it. It's never been this big since the first WC I can remember (94)

I won't be having fun, have to work. Special WC paper :p

Sorry to hear you had to sit through Nigeria vs Iran as one of your first ever football matches, Loxley.

Glad you survived it and enjoyed the other games.

The amount of belgian flags is insane. That companies try to bank on the WC doesnt surprise me, but the enthusiasm from the general public sure does. Seems like every other house or car has a belgian flag on it.

Tonight should be a cakewalk for Belgium. They're one of the better teams and Algeria the absolute worst. (narrowly winning from Burkina Faso to qualify, with dubious help from the referee)
Anything but a resounding win would look problematic for Belgium.

Man, im so bummed out that Reus is injured. He is a top 10 player in the world, and without a doubt germanys best player so far this year. Im hoping the germans win it anyway, but he is one of my favorite players.

A Mexico win today would be glorious. Even a draw would be great.

Belgium should have no problem getting three points.

The Russia v Good Korea game will be another snooze fest (like Iran v Nigeria was).
