Wolfenstein TNO: 2014 GotY + one of the best shooters ever *GIF WARNING*

Ive tried to finish this game since its come out. I cant do it.

The shooting is great.

Not having enough ammo for any fun and walking around pressing x after shooting 4 bullets so i can shoot three more is not fun.

How so? The gameplay to cutscenes is handled poorly (at least the PS4 version is since that's what I played). The game is already ugly and when a cutscene comes up you have to wait for it to load a slightly less ugly prerendered scence. Yay. Some loads are longer than others and you get this great screen to stare at while you wait for the story to kick in:

That's cutscenes handled poorly. The level design being mediocre in spots is going to be subjective.

I played on PS4 as well and I didn't get any weird loading issues between gameplay and cutscenes. It was instant and smooth.

Picked this up in the steam sale and enjoying it so far. The plot and the game seem completely disjointed but I don't really care, I am just enjoying the old schoolish mechanics and game play.

Those are the chapters that ultimately set this game apart. I hope MachineGames never stops making those chapters. Plus Chapter 6 has some of my favorite shootouts in the game. The entire chapter is shooting.

I'm not saying I didn't like the slower chapters for what they were, my problem is the placement. They are literally all in the middle of the game. It progresses
action -> downtime -> action -> downtime
for the entire middle portion of the game. I enjoyed the exposition for what it was, I just hated having to have it all middle of the game.

10 as well. I hated the underwater part where you just drove around, solved "puzzles" and listened to boring conversations.

I wish the whole middle part in the game was skippable. Wolfenstein is the kind of game that I just want to experience for the action, because it's so freakin' good.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. And technically you can skip them using chapter select. But I agree.

Absolutely amazing game, I picked it up in the day it came out, played it every day and it took me two weeks to see the end of it. Pretty long game, and absolutely amazing gameplay.
I play games since I can remenber and FPS's are my kind of games, this game brought me back to the gems of NOLF, Riddick, HL:2 and the likes. Absolutely amazing and memorable experience!
Keep praising this game guys, enough apraisail is not enough for this gem! :D

Hmm never had an issue with needing enough ammo (even on hardest difficulty). Silly question maybe, are you moving around and getting to enemies' bodies to pick it up? Blasting crates?

I know some people didn't like having to pick up ammo by pressing a button (became second nature to me), a patch for auto ammo pick up would satisfy them.

... holy hell. The emotions took over me. I play the game mostly stealthy, but when those Nazis
walked into my home
I went duel-wield and shotguns through the whole section.

A timeline difference that people might not have noted:

While J goes out via guitar "weapon" playing Star Spangled Banner, Tekla has a huge Nazi bodycount, Blazko trained her VERY well! http://i.minus.com/ibpz0j7enGjEIH.jpg

Also, go to sleep in Chapter 9 [Fergus timeline]. Really weird and philosophical cutscene :D

That's weird because I don't have ammo problems, I just grab more ammo from the pile of dead nazi's

Question about the above
when I played, Tekla was always mean to Blazko.... When he sees her in the vents, they act like old friends... When did he train her? . I know you can have a dream sequence about her but I couldn't trigger it

This tread made me re pick up this game. Played a couple hours at release and it's been sitting in backlog since. At chapter 11 now, and the game gets really good after the long ass intro. Fantastic game so far.

Best job application, ever.

I'm currently playing through the game first time. Just finished the prologue, but it seems very promising.

If you sleep in Chapter 9
that whole cutscene involves Tekla talking to you about consciousness, predictions, etc. Right after it, Blazko gets up and goes to her room where she has many pistols on the ground, which is where Blazko decides to train her on her request. Then you actually wake up and are back to gameplay.

Ordered this game. Partially thanks to this thread. The notice that it's available for $40 from amazon definitely helped. Too bad I don't want to wait 2 more days! This'll be my first next gen retail game.

I didn't think this game was anything special.
The shooting felt good, but apart from a couple of open areas it was a typical modern shooter with heaps of cutscenes and (to me) a boring story.

How I wish somebody would do a real remake of Doom or Duke 3d, that open gameplay with todays graphics would be awesome! (and yes I know there are graphic mods).

One gripe I had about the game:

I wish it had more/in depth side missions involving the characters so you get to know them better. All of the extra things you can do in the hideout (find the wedding ring for Anne, collect the 4 toys for Max), don't really mean anything or matter. You find something, bring it back, and get a blurb of dialog. In the toy case, you just set the toys down in his room, and you're done with that. Much more could have been done in this regard, especially looking to Darkness and Riddick. Would've helped cement some friendships/feelings when certain things happen, like the one dude who suicude bombs the Nazi building. It was unexpected, sure, but it could've gone a long way had we gotten to know that person a little bit beforehand.

I would really like this patch. Guess its easier to grab ammo on PC than it is on consoles because on the consoles you have look in the general area or at the floor while taking your finger off the stick to collect it. Its establishes a chunky rhythm and there's no tactical consideration behind it (when would you ever decide not to pick some ammo up?), so I think the game would be nothing but improved by having auto-pickup of ammo (and non-overcharged health).

I don't want to go back to hunting colored key cards, sorry.

Not that I don't love Doom, but I don't want modern FPS games to be just like it. The genre rightfully left that mechanic behind with Half-Life and rightfully never looked back.

I would prefer Half-Life 1 to be the inspiration for modern FPS games over Doom, Quake, or Duke3D. A game that shows you can still have incredible and exciting level design without building mazes of locked doors.

I just really don't like mazes, but I loved those old FPSs, anyway. I just don't want to find any more any more colored key cards. I think Dark Forces was the last straw.

The final boss fight was a pain in the ass.

Took me a while to figure out you have to
shoot the blimps with the well hidden cannons to stop him from recharging.

But its over now. Overall very good game. I had my fun with it. Will make another playthrough in the new timeline.

Also, after that ending I want a sequel. I hope Machinegames get to make it.

I want to kill that bitch Engel too

Well, the new doom had carmack and co. saying that the idea for the game was to bring the feeling of the old doom (I & II), where you fought agigantic number of enemies and had great level design and everything. In my opinion the key cards worked like a "down time" for the games, where this mechanic prevented you to have endless action all the time, which would lessen the adrenaline of destroying a whole room full of monsters, and then skimming through all the carnage looking for the door to open, you know?

So i would love to see a new doom "modernized", in the sense that we could even have a great storyline like this new one, and pacing that wouldn't need these key cards. I really want to see what id is doing with the new doom, i don't have the highest hope, but it's been too long since i wait for quakecon to see this thing.

Well here's my theory, I don't actually think the gunplay is that good. Despite dual-wielding weapons and a ton of giblets I never felt the weapons had much heft or gave much feedback. The AI was poor and it was a lot simpler to just go all guns blazing, stealth being a bit of a missed opportunity. Not a bad game by any means, but doesn't deserve the huge fan following in my opinion.

One of the best for me, but that depends which shooters you're judging this by. "Couple" heh, that's an understatement. If it didn't do much for you, can't do anything to convince otherwise. Plays very differently from typical modern shooters. I found this to have some of the best storytelling in a FPS, only game up there is The Darkness where I had as much an emotional stake, along with System Shock and Deus Ex. I find it more consistent in greatness among the various aspects than Half Life 2 (weak vehicle sections, not all puzzles were great, not as much character interaction time, shooting feedback outside of magnum is not as impactful), Shadow Warrior (weak shooting, lots of kitchen-sink encounters, bullet sponges), Metro (some mediocre and frustrating levels, inconsistent human AI), FEAR (aside from the best shooting feel and exemplary AI, too repetitive in environments, some cheap scares compared to Condemned, really bad story), Bulletstorm (has many modern tropes packed around really refreshing gameplay where shooting is the exception, all about creativity, has a love/hate personality, story or characters are not as interesting), RAGE (only good part about it is the combat). Then there are the old school style shooters like Painkiller that have really fun combat and weapons but not much else. This game has the best of what I like in many FPSs, so to me that's why it's one of the best shooters ever.

The only games above this are the immersive sim RPGs (Stalker, Deus Ex, System Shock) but those games don't have the best feeling combat. Both DOOM games have some of the most variety in enemies, I wish this Wolfenstein was as unique but it's not going supernatural, bit more grounded, so understandable.

This game felt like a well-executed amalgamation of the genre, but nothing more. It was safe.

In context, not sticking to many tropes of modern design in a big-budget package is why I wouldn't call it safe.

There were a few minor aspects that weren't typical of modern shooters, like the duel-wielding, health packs, and good writing. But for the most part it was a rather linear, cinematic, cover-based shooter. With the exception of a few more open areas, it was a well-executed roller coaster.

It's a quality experience, and none of those characteristics are inherently bad. After all, Naughty Dog's games use that formula. But it would disappoint me if Doom 4 went the same route. I'm hoping for more of a player-driven experience that's less about moving through scripted sequences and cut-scenes. I'd also prefer more speed and less armed enemies, which would eliminate the need for using cover and instead emphasize agility.

Sounds more like you want a Quake 5 in the vein of Quake 1.

The problem with the middle part of the game is that they take away the game's greatest strengths for extended periods of time (too much IMO). Let's be real, without the gunplay Wolfenstein isn't all that special gameplay wise.

i got about 2 hours in and holy shit this game has got me HOOKED! Im so happy this game doesn't have health regen lol. The story has been great so far and im loving the gameplay.

Just don't call it a cover shooter and I'm fine with that description. It's like calling Vanquish a cover shooter just because it gives you the option for moments of respite just like the original Wolfenstein when hugging walls.

But seeing as B.J. can't strafe very fast and that the enemies all have guns, using cover is what most people will have to do for most of the firefights. I know it's not as ingrained into the experience as Gears of War, for example, but it's also not an experience where players can go around and rely on their agility. The enemies deal a lot of damage, you can't dodge their attacks, and there's usually at least one or two armored enemies, who you can't fight head on.

Again, there's nothing inherently bad about cover gameplay. That type of gameplay is more realistic and it felt quite fresh for a while, but fashion goes in cycles, and I think people will find Doom 4 to feel fresh if it's more about dodging, rather than taking cover and being cautious. That approach keeps the player into the fight, since you can dodge and shoot at the same time, rather than going from shooting to cover.

It's basically a cover shooter in higher difficulties. The game doesn't give you any other ways at all of avoiding damage. It's nothing like Vanquish.

Am I missing something? Ending spoiler:
I am just at the final Deathhead battle. When I meet up with Anya and co there was a stack of prisoners with them. Then they just left me bleeding on the ground and ran to the elevator, which seemed odd. When I caught up to them there were only four people in the elevator, where did everyone go? Whole seemed really disjointed.

The rest of them take the stairs and get to ground level, while Blazko/Anya/Set/Bombate take the elevator. If you look back to the cutscene of the elevator before the boss battle, the rest get out in time at ground level but the cord snaps and you're taken to the very top where you then fight Deathshead. Blazko doesn't get to leave the compound. Caroline mentions that they need to get everyone out via helicopter which she's piloting. At the end of the battle, you can see them down below as Blazko is on the top. The only way to get up to him would be via helicopter... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbww4vmB88k#t=91m25s

None of that matches my experience, and I found it more viable to rely on my agility. Armored enemies can be taken down pretty easily from the back, they have a slow turn radius which can be exploited. The robotic ones have batteries there to be shot off.

It's basically a cover shooter in higher difficulties. The game doesn't give you any other ways at all of avoiding damage. It's nothing like Vanquish.

Weird, cause I finished the game on Uber (twice) and didn't see much use for cover unless if I was being pounded by the heavies. Which is when I'd switch to the power weapons (shotgun shrapnel, rockets, LKW, laser rifle) and take them out first. I would be getting more damage sticking in cover than flanking around enemies. If there was a statistic for how long I'd stay in cover, it'd probably be 2% of my entire playthroughs.
