When Star Wars Episode 1 didn't exist.
But then it was a mostly new concept then. Usually it was just a prequel and if there were trilogies they were probably the domain of books.
Please let it be Ivalice. An FFXII/Vagrant Story/FFT prequel trilogy to tie the 3 games together, and ending with the fall of Nabudis would be neeeaaaaat.

Honestly... I'm expecting this.
They're gonna go for the place with the most money, without the chance to "fuck up" their most prized title. If they somehow manage to pull off prequels without ruining everything, they'll say "ok, lets just go with this direction, and make a full remake."

Would FFXIII technically be a prequel trilogy to FFXV considering they share mythos? Could be the inevitable PS4/Xbone remasters of FFXIII 1-3
Well, you never know. There could be a reason (other than Gackt) that they haven't done anything with Crisis Core yet. Maybe a remake of that is planned for this trilogy.

Why would they have to trademark the terms? Unless they want to name something like Final Fantasy: Prequel Trilogy 1. Which makes as much sense as calling a game The Game. Devs who want to make sequels and prequels don't go trademarking these terms -_-"
I think I just unconsciously said FUCK out loud.
This is something that I'd be okay with.
But only after FFXV and KHIII are finished and released. Last thing I want from Square Enix is another cool looking game announced and dangled in front of me for years to come.

Thought this as well, especially since there was a rumour (or confirmation?) that they intended to do a trilogy for the Deus Ex Universe this gen.

Yes, yes they did. But the "prequel" makes me wondering, since DX:HR was a prequel on its own. So... would it be a prequel to DX:HR (which wouldn't make too much sense in my opinion), or a sequel to HR and still a prequel to the original? Any how, I just want my Deus Ex fix if it's as good as HR, but I'm not too sure about it being a trilogy. I'd much rather have one 30+ hour game than three 10 hour games.

Totally different cycle. The Sonic Cycle has misguided hype.
The Sonic Cycle: "Maybe this time it'll be different! There are hints that this time a sequel might actually be fun to play, in these few seconds of gameplay footage!"
The Square Cycle: "More stupid bullshit when I and everyone I know or have ever met would pay stupid amounts of money for some proper fanservice for FF7 or Chrono Trigger or just anything pre goddamn Lightning. What's wrong with you, Toriyama?"
