Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

This is hilarious because if this was a PS4 exclusive (timed or not), the responses here would be way different.

Oh please tell us more.

OP you should add this

Dear Tomb Raider Community,

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio.

Tomb Raider in 2013 was a success due in large part to your continued support. Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past - we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

We know that there are probably many more questions and concerns. Please do send them to us, and we’ll answer to the best of our ability. Meanwhile we’re going all out to try and make something truly special - the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built.

Thanks,

Darrell Gallagher

Lol, that's golden!

yeah i think its really exclusive as the previous titles were all worded as "first on xbox" instead of "exclusive", first meaning timed exclusive.

As much as I enjoyed Tomb Raider 2013, this isn't a game that would make me buy an xbone. Especially since I would just wonder how it would it look/play on my PC.

Furthermore, I wonder if this means I was naive in hoping MS would develop their own exclusives rather than just buying them.

eh, we didn't know how much MS paid for it

First Tomb Raider sold like 6.5 million among five platforms. There is no way it's even going to get remotely close to that on the xbox one. Microsoft could've potentially paid 100 million, to make it worth their while. I think it's nonsense.

Do you guys really see this game as a console seller? I mean, I guess good for MS, but I dont think this exclusivity is going to do much for the XO.

not really, it's more like the sum of the parts are greater than the whole thing, add another feather to the cap thingy

Certainly not a franchise I would buy a console for but I was looking forward to the sequel. If it is truly exclusive then I guess I will just miss out.

What kind of money are we talking about here to get a deal like this?

Tens of millions of dollars. The first one sold, what, over six million copies across all versions? So MS would have probably have had to compensate SE to the tune of at least 3 million delayed/lost sales.

i'm never going to play this game, but that's a really dumb move, but it's expected from square, the master of bad decisions in the industry.

My gosh.

How can this be?

Throughout Lara's history she has never been exclusive! She has always been on the PC and it's pretty much always got the best versions and when it came to consoles most of her history has been with Playstation. Now they want to say goodbye to that history?

Wow... So shocking. Still can't believe this to be true. At most it has to be timed.

Huh, bummer. I'll be playing Uncharted but maybe by 2016 there will be enough exclusives to justify a Xbox One purchase.

I'm almost more surprised it's cross-gen. Holiday 2015 seems really late to be doing that.

Even a timed exclusive on a game that shipped 6.5 million copies seems pretty insane from a business perspective, but hey it's not my money.

MS must be really worried at their lack of first party exclusive content for 2015. I wonder how much they paid to get it (presumably timed) exclusive? I wonder if the fact Uncharted 4 should be out on PS4 next holiday effected Square's decision?

MS saved Tomb Raider, it was going to be cancelled if they didn't step in with the money. MS doesn't money hat.

Yea, sure.

It's cool to get another Tomb Raider but I don't know if they needed to use resources to make this exclusive(timed). Maybe they figured they didn't want PS to pick up too much exclusive content (Destiny,Diablo ect).

What a dumb decision. Do they think people who don't have a Xbox right now will buy one for this game? I certainly won't. Or do they think they will earn sympathy with this move? It was announced as a multiplatform title. It is a sequel to multiplatform series. Screw them.

Yup! Just like it nowhere suggests that it's forever "exclusive" for Xbone

Sorry, but the word exclusive without anything attached to it (like timed exclusive or exclusive for 2015 only) suggests exactly that it's exclusive forever.

everybody knows the numbers of the xbox one, including square-enix. it's obvious that MS made a VERY good offer, otherwise they wouldn't have taken it. how is that "bad business"?

So Tomb Raider will sell badly on purpose? I don't get it, since it was a multiplatform title for so long now. Is the money worth it to piss off your fanbase?

Well, this is SE. Would you really be surprised? TR isn't a huge franchise (last one only sold 6 million), and MS is desperate probably throwing money where ever it sticks. Put two and two together (maybe SE felt threatened by UC?).

But yea, not going to be buying an X1 anytime soon now, $299 or not, MS just permanently lost me

This is hilarious because if this was a PS4 exclusive (timed or not), the responses here would be way different.

For a major franchise like this? I am sure there would be plenty of belly aching no matter the console. There are still people salty about Bloodborne.

I can't believe they are doing this, they are actually trying to kill the franchise instead of relaunching it by pissing off more than half of the fanbase (and the Definive Version sold way more on the PS4).

Twitter is going to explode soon.

Focusing on one platform will really allow them to maximize it at least. I own all consoles, so the exclusivity stuff doesn't really bother me one way or another.

Xbox UK PR guy is saying it's exclusive. Period.

I still find that very hard to believe, but we'll see.

Yeah I can't see this staying exclusive forever.

Square: "The Tomb Raider reboot was a market failure."
-2 years Later-
Square: "Hey let's put Tomb Raider exclusively on the console that's only selling half as well as the other."

Then again, Square Enix isn't known for basing its decisions on...anything.

This is what I'm trying to understand. They complain it doesn't sell enough, then make the sequel exclusive.

Makes no sense for this franchise. Seriously hope this move shoots themselves in the foot. If I have to wait a year to play TR, I'll just wait two and get it when it's 5 bucks.
