Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Interesting decision by Microsoft, and it was probably worth it in the immediate for Crystal Dynamics.

I wasn't very interested in the first one, so this won't make me want to buy an Xbox One, but it was smart of them to lock bizarro-Uncharted to their console so they can have some direct competition.

Mega fucking ton. They must have got a shit load of money from MS to do this. Really curious as to how much was paid to cover all the cost of PS4/PC potential buyers. I'm guessing >$100m

Guyz, Square Enix can use these dozens of millions of dollars Microsoft paid them on the development of Final Fantasy XV.

Thanks, Microsoft, you just helped FFXV come out in 2021 instead of 2025.

Yo, real talk.

FUCK you, Square and Microsoft.

Yeah, I'm salty. This is the kind of anti-consumer bullshit these assholes love to get up to.

Better be timed.
Absolutely. This not making me buying an Xbone but mad angry at Square. What's the thinking in making a none exclusive series exclusive? Rage ensured. I bet my ass this is going to have consequences for Square. And everyone knows: The consequences will never be the same.

Now that is just insulting.

This game will not be a system seller for MS and Square can not complain about poor sales now this is a bad move all around.

And then he starts talking about the reason why, like it isn't just so much money.

You know, I'm ok. I thought the new Tomb Raider had some really untrustworthy puzzle design, in that I didn't believe the developers were making good on their promise of consistent internal logic required for proper puzzle construction.

fuck off Microsoft. Do that to one more franchise i like ...
and i'll probably go buy your fucking console

Most of the responsibility here is the publisher valuing Microsoft's money over the consumer's money. I'm not mad at Microsoft, just disappointed at Squeenix and Crystal D.

Edit: Mostly Squeenix as I doubt the dev had much of a say.

This isn't about profitability, this is about desperation.

Of course it's about profitability. Microsoft is a business, not a spiteful child -- if it didn't think that preventing a multiplatform release of the game for Q4 2015 would be a viable business strategy, this thread wouldn't exist.

I don't mind exclusives, but I do mind it when a multiplatform games sequel goes exclusive. This is extremely shitty even if I'm not personally all that interested in this specific game.

Exactly what I dreaded happening - instead of building new games and their own first party stuff, Microsoft are just going to buy exclusives to the detriment of everyone.

If they get the next Mass Effect or Bioshock game I will be incredibly, incredibly unhappy.

the weird thing is that there is no doubt Tomb Raider on PS3+PS4+PC almost certainly did better than 360+One.
MS must've spend at least 50-100 million (if it's really full exclusivity, don't trust them to tell the truth though) to get the exclusivity which sounds insane to me considering they could just create 2-3 huge new games with that much money.

As a Wii U owner looking forward to playing Bayo 2 in October, there is no way I can get salty about this.

Yes, Microsoft bought themselves a high profile AAA exclusive. I doubt it'll be the last time they do so, and I doubt Sony won't be doing the same thing as well. AAA games are more expensive than ever. When publishers are running low on funds like Square are, they're going to start looking for more support and guarantees from platform holders. Whatever Microsoft paid, I'm sure it helped cover the initial cost of development for the game.

There is no reason for people to get super salty about this. Microsoft made a good decision, and bought themselves a nice exclusive. Xbone owners have got something else to look forward to now. I doubt I'll play the game anytime in the near future, but I'm sure it'll make for a nice reason to one day pick up a Bone. Anyone who uses this as a jumping off point to go on about the Evil Empire Microsoft, and how this is another example of them ruining things for everyone, and how it needs a definitive PS4 release too, yadda yadda, please. Don't turn this into another Bayo 2 reveal thread. For all we know, Microsoft could have been funding this from the beginning.

Let's all keep our heads here. Every platform is going to have exclusives that everyone wants. It's going to sting sometimes, but that's how exclusivity works.

Again, this is what worries me about the direction of this industry. Microsoft are in it to win, and willing to throw billions at whoever in the short term.

Once they win, and they will win, and Sony leaves this business... All I can say is that a lot of people who want MS "competing" to "keep Sony on their toes" are going to miss the PS2 Sony dominance days.

Because once Microsoft acquires the monopoly, nobody will be able to stand up to them. Nobody. The barrier of entry will be too high.
What is this? Lol

There will always be competition. Microsoft isn't literally Satan no matter how much GAF tries to convince people that they are

I have an Xbox One and PS4, but I'm sure as fuck not playing this on Xbox One. I'll wait for the inevitable PS4 version. Eat shit, Square Enix.

I think I agree with others when they say they'd prefer to see that money invested in new IP rather than money hatting current IP. I've no problem with exclusives when they're born somewhere and grow up somewhere. If you want a great IP to grow though, let it go

Need to get some real discussion here;

I was one of the 40,000 or so people living in Japan who bought and enjoyed the Definitive Edition for PS4. With the way XBO is being handled in Japan, you can guarantee that this sequel won't even hit those numbers over here.

Feeling pretty disappointed by this news.

Hopefully its timed exclusiove for Xbox consoles, and there will be no delays on PC.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.
Come on, they don't need to rub salt on our Wounds.

Good god the PS bias on this forum is sickening. Constant jibes about 900p 30fps, shot themselves in the foot etc... etc...

Is there anywhere on GAF where adults share their opinion rather than angsty teenagers with a severe brand loyalty delusion?

You're hilarious and don't know what you're talking about, are you?

Ugh. I hate moneyhatted exclusives so goddamn much. It's such a slimy practice.

Lol, I don't think half are on xbox. Most likely most fan base is PC because very old series. 1996 I think

Exactly. It's such a strange decision to make.
