Really enjoying my time with Pentumble from Helftone. Fresh, addictive, punishing and rewarding, and now only 1$, down from 3$...

This looks really good...looking forward to it.
Can't say no to Threes+Roguelike+RPG elements.
No RPG elements in NC. Here's my review of the PC version, the dev said the IOS game is the same content-wise
http://indiegameenthusiast.blogspot.com/2014/07/pc-spotlight-103-nightmare-cooperative.html
The Nightmare Cooperative is a compact game, a roguelike distilled to its base elements. You won't find complex skill trees, or a multitude of loot to collect and equip, or expansive environments for you to explore and perish in. That's not a bad thing; if you're looking for something simple but challenging, simplified yet also strategic and tactical, The Nightmare Cooperative excels.

I couldn't get into FF:T at all, it seems like a rather poor port of a good game.

There's a few options you can change in the menus to make the UI better, but it's probably one of SE's best ports on iOS. Definitely does the game justice, unlike quite a few other ports they've done. And it is an incredible game, great music, fun gameplay - the only thing it's missing is the ability to raise the difficulty of the AI like in the 1.3 mod for the PSP version.

It really is a great port, the game lends itself perfectly to touch controls (camera controls alone are very smooth). One of the few instances where SE got updated graphics right in recent times too. It's as close to a definitive version you can get imo.

As far as the game itself goes, even if you read the whole tutorial it can take quite a while until everything clicks if you're playing it for the first time, but after it does it's fantastic.

What are good turn-based action game like WH Quest? This game and X-Com made me appreciate this genre and I want more :)

Shadowrun Returns is an RPG but the turn based combat in it is pretty fun. Don't know when the Dragonfall expansion is out on ios

I can't unrecommended that game enough. The combat/art/writing is as bad if not worse than random f2p crap no ones ever heard of.

Possibly my mostvregretted iOS purchase.

I didn't think it's fantastic but your opinions should also come with a disclaimer that they are often very black and white. Meanwhile we're discussing this in the context of the person enjoying Warhammer Quest (which is relatively simple combat) so I think it will be something he would probably like

First I've heard of it. Is it doing anything original? I played a ton of Tiny Tower but I struggled keeping my interest with Tiny Death Star

From what I saw the main sell to it is it will have mini games on the floors, so you can play real games of Poker/Blackjack/Roulette/Slots/etc in it to win prizes/money, while otherwise being generally a copy of Tiny Tower. The mini games are very basic though, in the spirit of the look to Tiny Tower, so don't expect fancy video Slots with elaborate bonus games / free spins.

Totally agreed. It's not the best game ever, but it's certainly enjoyable.

Has anybody played Battleheart Legacy yet? I haven't bought it yet but I keep seeing it in the great role playing games selection. Apparently it's predecessor and this sequel based on reviews have been really good, but was curious on the thoughts from Gaf.

Excellent. Posted this on an earlier page
I never played the other Battleheart games, but very impressed by Legacy. Charming graphics, a huge amount of freedom and depth in how you develop your character, the best tap to move/attack controls IMO. Want to be a teleporting archer or melee-heavy mage who can call down meteors from above? All those options are available

So this is weird.
I consider myself pretty informed on everything iOS gaming related...but...

My son told me to download a random game from the App Store, probably attracted by the icon...was free so why not?

Actually...it seems a great game, with really nice graphics!!!

It's called Dodo Master, it's free for iPhone and 1 dollar on iPad (no universal :( )
It's a weird platformed where you control a Dodo...I played just 20 minutes but so far it's pretty great, nice controls and even a bit difficult too.

If you like platformers, check it out.

Never heard about that before, reminds me both Penumbear and Shadow Complex for some reasons.

Won this last week in a giveaway. Damn shame that devs already had to drop the price due to sales, because this is a great platformer that deserves more attention and exposure. It feels like a mix of Escape Goat and Leo's Fortune: you choose levels from a hub, unlocking new level sets as you progress, precision platforming with diverse and varied traps, wonderful lighting and visuals

It's great really...I didn't know anything about it...found now even a TA thread.
Buying the iPad version (60 FPS too).

I suggest everyone interested in platformers at the very least check out the free iphone version.

It may look 'childish' and such but this seems a real gem.

More_Badass....you are the man needed in case like these...great devs that know NOTHING about a bit of hype building BEFORE the game is out....DO SOMETHING!!!
Spread the word! :)

Ha, I am, I am! Will have reviews for Dodo Master and Pentumble on my blog and Game Mob this week. (Check out Pentumble as well, another good platformer that dropped in price due to poor sales)

Wow.....in the game you control a (badass) Dodo but it's really BRUTAL.

I have no idea what Dodos did to the dev but WOAH at all those deaths animations!!!
He really enjoyed setting up all those traps.

I'm still anxiously awaiting that game Kingdoms. They said by the end of August, I thought?

gif-trailer.gif

Me too....must be close according to the dev twitter but not THAT close.

I wonder if iOS 8 will slow down things (I'm hearing about a new Gamecenter framework that in some cases gets weird with async turn management).

iOS 8 Gamecenter needs to bring back usernames instead of real names, or at least make it an option. Also, More_Badass, what's your GC? I feel like I need to add you. Mine is Flunkie44.

Dodo MASTER is truly a great platformer, made by 1 man with the help of his girlfriend. It is a shame that such a quality product goes free so soon after launch, like awp said, deserves the original asking price. 105 levels full of Dodo traps and fun.

Same with Pentumble, a slightly innovative sticky platformer that is fun and challenging all the same time. Again, not much reception and its down to 1$.

Love both games, really solid masterly made platformers.

A cunning and addictive sim, Motorsport Manager offers enough that genre fans will love it, and casual players won't be put off

Absolutely agree with PittaGAF and More_Badass regarding Dojo Master. It's extremely polished with fantastic graphics and great controls.

It's obviously different in gameplay, but I'd put it pretty close to the level of Leo's Fortune as far as console quality platformers go on iOS. And a one-man effort. Damn shame it isn't getting more recognition.

Wish before going free he had just dropped it to $.99 to generate sales. The game is well worth it's original $2.99 asking price.

I honestly don't know much about it.
I've seen images and apparently there's some sort of casino mini-games, but don't really know how they work.

I played too countless hours of the original Tiny Tower, and couldn't be bothered by Tiny Death Star. IIRC, it wasn't even developed by NimbleBit themselves. I didn't feel it had the usual layer of polish that NimbleBit games have.
I'm really looking forward to Vegas, though. I hope it becomes the new time waster for me.

BTW, I played Hay Day for a couple of weeks, and decided to ABANDON it.
It obsessed me a bit like other timer-based games do, but I realized two things: it has no objective at all, and the paywalls are, once again, too obvious.
I think I'm done with SuperCell games forever. I couldn't stomach neither Clash of Clans, nor Boom Beach, nor Hay Day. They all begin pretty good, they are very addictive, but then they push a paywall right in front of you. You reall can't play happily without overcoming that, and I don't like this.

I've played the first one and recommend it entirely. The controls are simple and become intuitive from moment one. Varied classes give a good warm strategy feel, especially when you put together a small team that clicks the way you want it to.

My go-to was a simple tank, heal/buff and DPS combo for the longer battles and arenas. Every now and then, I'd switch to full DPS for quick clearing, a mix between ranged and upfront, which was mostly an all-in, glass cannon scenario.

Edit: Forgot that I came here to say that Star Wars Commander is pretty good for the first little while, but the horrible AI goes from a nuisance to a complete hindrance when the missions become a little more involved. Targetting a wall while a group of enemies blast you? Doing the same but standing in turret range? Running from one end of a base to the other because some random spot aggroed harder than the rest? Unacceptable and quickly heading toward a delete. I'm not sure that I have enough interest in it anymore to wait around for a fix.

Any feedback on the current design of the OP? Does it work out alright with dark mode for people? (I think it does personally but I'm always seeking feedback!)
Overall it uses much less data than the previous design, which is always a stickler when the games keep piling up. :)

Also I fucking suck at F1 management, my 'Palooka Tuners' racing team is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Nice time to enjoy platformers. They Need To Be Fed 3 is awesome, now I just got this Dodo which seems good too. I want to get Leo's Fortune but will wait a price drop.

Wish there were more 3D platformers though...

I spent 30 minutes with Dodo Master and find it to be mostly terrible. Cheap deaths due to bad controls is not fun. I guess it's worth a shot since it's free but it's not for me and I love platformers

edit: To speak further on the game, graphically it's gorgeous but between the controls and the items they place on the UI covering up traps, it's incredibly frustrating. It should be noted I'm playing it on the iPhone which may not be ideal for this game.

Yeah it might be the case that iPhone is not ideal for this game. On my iPad I find the traps easy enough to find. I don't have any problems with the controls. It's pretty standard fare and only two buttons (jump and stomp).

That said, the game is fun but not groundbreaking or anything. Maybe because I'm coming from They Ned To Be Fed 3 which I really liked. It sure is a looker though.

Yeah my only complain about that is that is too zoomed in to see it properly the traps. Controls arent a problem for me, they just feel right. Love the jumping physics, the altitude and the fall speed. If you like They Need to be Fed 3 maybe you should check Pentumble, both games has some resemblance but the later is a bit harder.

Colossatron is fucking weird, huh.

I want to like it, because Halfbrick, and I'm winning. But I actually have no idea what I'm doing.

Yeah, I played the game for an hour and shelved it. Game is neat and fun to look at, but I never got a sense that anything I did actually did anything. None of it was very clear. You just toss colors onto the dragon. Even if you don't match colors all of the time you still end up doing... stuff and eventually winning. Sure, it's more fun to play the game as you're supposed to play it, but there was no point to do so in my eyes.

Until Sept 2, the Season 1 Intro Pack for Pinball Arcade is free. The pack includes Ripley's Believe it or not!, Black Hole and Theatre of Magic. It won't look like it, 'cause Farsight has done a terrible job of promoting the freebie: there's no indication in the app or in the update notes. Just go to one of those tables and choose to buy the Pack, it'll come up free and you'll feel like you've disovered some sneaky bug...But you didn't...It's a promotion.

Well I'm convinced. :D are Healers viable in the game? I usually like playing the healer in these kind of RPGs.

8bit Dove - By Nitrome

screen520x924.jpeg

My Impressions:

After completing the first world with 75 out of 88 pigeons -you have to collect as much birds as possible in one play-though to complete a chapter that counts for the leaderboards- (out of three worlds in total), I can say that this feels like the perfect version of Pigs Cant Fly. The level design is more... challenging. Controls are inverted and the character has some physics that falls into the hard to master type, and of course a pretty big one more try appeal to keep going further and seeing what the game has to fully offer as its is really getting fun and keeping the interest rising, as it is difficult but not frustrating. I can see myself going for it and trying to beat it in these upcoming days. Great stuff.

Update: And now I know that is made by Birslip, the developer behind Microtrip now working for Nitrome -I guess a reward for his work-, a fun endless faller that came up a while ago. Cool.

ALONE by Laser Dog, coming tonight at midnight...

IMG_5193.PNG

My Impressions: I got this from a promo code I found in Twitter a few days ago. Played it a lot. You have to control a spaceship with relative touch (not touch to go up) and have to guide it through caves and avoiding the floor, ceiling and falling rocks. The game is divided into 4 different difficulties. The first one is a tutorial. PRO is where it all starts. This game is fast and intense and I quite like it. Been having fun with it. Feels like a much less frustrating version of Wave Wave. And this is a very good thing.
