The Vanishing of Ethan Carter |OT| A first person murder mystery (PC)

No, no letters or notes anywhere and the gates still open. Well that's an annoying bug.
That sucks, I guess I was lucky that the section worked fine for me, since you're the second one to report it. You might want to make a community thread about it or whatever so that the developers can see it. They did a last-minute patch before the game so I imagine they're willing to fix things if they can reproduce them.

I don't know if the game will consider you having finished that section so you can complete it or not. If you can complete the game without that section, and you're curious, I can screenshot the letters you missed so you can read them.

*edit* Can you try emailing your autosave file with the problem to Support@TheAstronauts.com? The Steam discussions forum has that address in an FAQ.

I'm getting stuttering like crazy. Anyone know of a fix?
AMD card or nVidia? GTX 770 was fine for me aside from occasionally loading new areas.

GTX 780. I just seems like a stutter fest even if i'm just looking around.

Where does it manifest/how often/ what is happening when it happens?

Part of me wants to say "that is UE3 for you," but we need to know more about your Rig and in game settings to say what to do.

What is your VRAM usage like, what is your framerate?

It's happening almost 80% of the game. I've play UE3 games just fine before.

i7 920 - oc to 3.4
12 gb ram
stock 780 - latest drivers

framerates seems to be fine, at least on fraps. with afterburner it just gives me a shit ton of numbers.

didn't pay attention to the ram usage but i don't think it was out of the ordinary.

I everything on full except - 2x msaa and AF to 4x

That's weird, my system is definitely worse than yours but ran fine. Do you have any software or utilities running in the background, by any chance? Or any 3D settings force-overridden in something like D3DOverrider?

no. just the geforce experience. I'm gonna try turning off all background applications and give it a try. I do feel a lot of the games i've been play have a slight stutter to them. so maybe it's something in my rig.

I was getting pretty major stuttering, but I just put it down to the game not liking SLI at launch. I haven't tested to see if I still get it when I run it on a single card.

GTX980s here, with a 5930K running at 4.6 Ghz.

If I'm still stuttering with SLI disabled, I'll let you know, but I won't be able to test for a few hours.

Latest drivers. Windows 8.1 64 bit.

Ok, so stuck now.

i got to the burned out house and woke Ethan up. Now there is a painting on the wall but it won't open fully. Two items are crossed out in red. A doorway and a bulls head. Now the doorway I think is the first house over the dam, and I did that so why is it crossed out? Don't know what the Bulls head is though

Answers:
The bull's head is on top of a big hill somewhere. When you get there it should trigger a sequence where the screen goes black and white and a witch starts talking. You'll end up finding a little tent.

The house one might be the house with all the blue doors. Did you find the hideout room in the house with all the candles, books, skull, and so forth?

Right just got in and finally had a chance to give this a spin. Blimey O'Riley does this give my 780 a work out at 2560x1440 with 2xMSAA, well in the intro section at least. Might have a play around in a bit and get SLI up and running but VRAM usage is pretty manageable. Regards to stuttering I've had a quick look at my frametimes and nothing is showing any of the tell tale UE3 quirks but the mouse acceleration and smoothing by default are really not to my tastes and I can see how that might play a part. Also I've never been a fan of the VSync used in UE3 and always force it through drivers of D3DOverider so that might play into things as well. This might sound like heresy but I think I might give this a go with a 360 pad over kb&m to smooth out the controls (it's not like precision is the aim of the game here) .

Did both of those. The
hideout room is the one with the moonshine kit in, right?
. And the other one is pretty unmissable

Can you open the
other end of the caves? The gate with the chain on that leads to a path round to the dam? And what's this about a blooming spaceman??

Lastly, is there any point to
the area through the generating house? You can walk across when the water is turned off, but doesn't seem to be anything there

cave
is showing as not done too, but all three definitely are :(

No, it didn't count as me doing it so I went all the way back after restarting the game and noticed the puzzle had been reset. So, I completed it again and it happened a second time BUT
I managed to pick up the note first so the zombie attacked me while I was reading it and that triggered the completion. When I closed the note the gate had shut and I had 2 more notes to read.
Very weird.

Comments about spoiler text:

Yeah I think the hideout had the moonshine kit. The other investigation near there on the map is in the cave. You can get into the cave through the broken door -- there's one thing to do with a minecar, some ghosts etc., and then there is also a spiral passage going down to a big underground section. You'll know it if you get to a gate with a warning note.

About the spaceman, go check the area marked on the map. I think it was in the woods not too far after the traincar at the start. There should be a metal post with lights on it that looks out of place. If you solve a puzzle involving the post, a very cool sequence happens.

Lastly, is there any point to
the area through the generating house? You can walk across when the water is turned off, but doesn't seem to be anything there
Yes, you'll want to go there after you've finished everything in the game. You will be able to find an (ENDING SPOILER)
burned house there, along with some cool scenery along the way.

OK I'm stuck sorry if mentioned before but
I'm going in circles in the underground portion with all the candles, finding the dead ghouls. So far I have five of their ghosts on the platform in front of the Stargate looking wheel. I've been running in circles forever trying to find the last one, are there six total? Maybe someone could give me a screen cap of the right symbol sequence? Assuming it isn't randomized and you don't need all the ghosts to solve it. Any help appreciated at my wits end over here.

If you have what you have, then you don't need the last one.
each ghost has a symbol around it - star, diamond etc - which shows which ring to move. The symbol they are standing on is what you rotate the ring to show. If you have 5/6 then just spin the other one until it opens

YES! This fixed the issue. Now I'm just getting the annoying stutter when loading a new area. Any fix on that?

I suspect the new area hitching thing is just Unreal Engine 3 streaming data in, it's been doing that since the days of Mirror's Edge. It doesn't seem to do it too often at least.

Sorry, I meant the other building. The one
where you turn the tap to slow the water flow. If you go out the other side there doesn't seem anything to do

And does the
spaceman ever end, or do I have to reload a save game?

Uhm.. I do a lot of running in this game, understandable being open world, but I feel as if I've missed important things or gone too far ahead, I always look back thinking I shouldn't have gone this far.

There are
five
investigations and
five
stories. You can complete them in any order except for one investigation.

anyone running this game on a 760?

I ran on a 660 GTX, other than sacrificing AA I ran it all maxed out very smoothly. Sans stuttering, of course. 760 should be just fine.

Generally once you've found something, it will be usable or relevant to something very closeby. The opening forest area is a bit confusing at first but some of the later areas are more clearly defined.

How is the controller support?
completely fine with a 360 wireless controller.

Will wait until tomorrow now to see if the patch helps. Definitely need it to recognise sections I've completed

spaceman section never ends for me. I just float in the capsule for ever. Tried it twice now and left it for ten minutes floating...floating....

Just finished it. I thought it was pretty good overall. I thought the story was a bit of a letdown. It just wasn't that intriguing. The voice acting was also pretty bad. I did like the side story bits though, those were neat. And of course the game was gorgeous.

anyone running this game on a 760?

Yeah 760 4gb here with an i5 stock. 50-60 fps at 1080p without MSAA on. Cut that in half with MSAA.

The Astronauts got caught in that unfortunate gulf between UE3 and UE4. Are there are any AAA games still using UE3 besides Arkham Knight?

I wonder if we will get achievements once the game comes out on PS4 and they have to come up with a trophy list just like Outlast did?

Anyone with a 120 or 144 Hz refresh monitor will also want to increase
MaxSmoothedFrameRate in the same file to their monitor's refresh rate or they will be capped at 62 fps (62 being the default value here).

any chance the loading stutter/hiccup will be fixed or at least toned down? really noticeable and annoying when running/backtracking.

I only noticed it at some points where I can replicate the stutter. Seems to be the loading of new assets. Once after that point I have no hiccups with a SSD.

It would be nice for sure. I have no clue how far in I am but just by going from the investigation segment I've done and the couple of side portions that gave letters I can see some scope here for some good achievements.

Looking for a bit of direction guys:

just completed the investigation with the altar and the crows, it's the second one I've came across. After that looked through the abandoned family house, and the investigation told me that Ethan went to the mines through the tunnel near the locked gate. But I can't find any tunnel?

Where do I go from here and have I missed anything?

I wish there was a better way of keeping track of things, I appreciate the hands off approach but I feel it could at least use a map or something; so easy to lose your sense of direction I feel.

Right just want to compare performance with other users with similar setup. Feel like I should be getting better fps even though the game does look stunning.

Running an overclocked GTX 770
i7 3770K OC'd to 4.4ghz
16GB RAM

Got everything on max with 4x MSAA with x16 AF. Getting 35-40 fps in wooded areas and 60fps looking over the landscape. I'm not sure if that's good for my card or if 770 users are hitting 60fps max everywhere. If that's the case then something is up with my PC.. lol.

I should probably drop the AF down a tad but not sure what other 770 users are having the gfx settings at. Apologies if I'm actually pushing my card too much, I don't game on my PC a fat lot until very recently

What resolution?
Dropping AF won't improve your performance.
Dropping AA will.

i'm assuming you've already tried this tweak? getting a solid 60fps with my 770 4gb / i7 3770. everything max, 1080p, 2x AA. only issues are some stuttering when the words appear on my screen (crank, blood, murder, etc) and the loading stuttering.

1080p bud. Ah ok. I could drop it to 2MSAA as I' don't mind the frame rate being lower than 60 I guess. It's not like this is an fps aha. I'm just wondering if my 770 is perfoming ok. As it's been a while since I put it to the test!

I have a NON-overclocked 2GB GTX 770, i5 3570k overclocked to 4.2 GHz, 8GB RAM. My system should be similar to yours, but worse.

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit for reference, and probably haven't updated the drivers recently. I think I was using 4xMSAA with either x4 or x16 AF. I got 60 fps overlooking landscape, maybe even in the woods as well, since I think I generally saw 50-60 everywhere. Try dropping your AF to x4 just in case (unlikely to cause much of a hit), and then try bringing the 770 back to stock speeds if that doesn't help.

Answers:

I think you should have seen two stories by then, and one or two investigations depending on your path. You can go back and get them later, and you'll get an ingame map reference at the end if you miss stuff.

Regarding the mine tunel, I'm not sure you can go in this path (I had an "Exit" cursor), but look for the big arch-like stone wall with a decorative pattern, then roam that hillside looking at the ground. There should be a tiny hole nearby.

There's also another cave entrance, but I think to get to that one you have to fall down an elevator which is a glitch and being patched out.
