Shinji Mikami's THE EVIL WITHIN |OT| Where's everyone going? Tango?

Dusk Golem

A 21st Century Rockefeller
The person playing the PS3 version of the game who's so far has completed 10 chapters lists so far his pros and cons of the game:

"Pros
Gunplay is satisfying
Awesome architecture
Varied environments
Atmosphere - It feels like RE4's Village some point, at some another feels like Silent Hill's otherworld, at another Lovecraft"ish"
Some awesome lighting
Very mature story, characters and themes (of course compared to RE series not Planescape Torment;)
Upgrade mechanics ( character upgrades, weapon upgrades)
Agony Bow ( all in one, harpoons, explosives, shock and flash bolts)
Fewer supplies in some chapters
Randomized enemies and supplies
Length (so far it seems very good)
Replayability ( I will definitely replay it at least once)
Stealth ( while it doesn't works with some enemies, it is still very useful)
Melee weapons are satisfying to use
Creative bosses
It doesn't have any fillers, every part of the game is crafted well

Cons
Puzzles are not hard ( I never had to think about what to do, they are very straight)
Technical problems ( very rare texture streaming issues, some clipping issues, graphical inconsistency, minor/major lighting issues which one level is full of, cutscenes)
Only medium and easy difficulty is avaible at the start (you need to beat it once to unlock higher ones
Easy bosses

Questions
It didn't bother me but the game might be running around 25-28 fps. It is how it makes me feel anyway. I don't think it runs rock solid 30. Digital Foundry or some tech guys will explain.

The time will show but we probably got the worthy successor to Resident Evil 4. All in all aside from some minor issues I find it really awesome. The ones at the Capcom should do seppuku because they lost Mikami and his team.:"

I like that 'puzzles aren't hard' is both a pro and a con.

I also REALLY like his take on the maturity of the story and themes.

This game sounds like exactly what I wanted it to be.

And? Does this mean we're all obligated to like this kind of horror? Because there are horror concepts that have existed before vampires and werewolves as well.

Old-Street-Lamp-367203.jpg

I'm not saying obligated. I'm saying it's seen more frequently. Even the lamps from SotD took me there. I'm saying there's this draw to certain types of horror. I'd say Aliens would be the first thing thought of when sci-fi occurs in space with a creature, much like dinosaurs are with Jurassic Park.

Easy bosses, huh? Well, as long as they're good, I'm happy.

Resident Evil 4 had fairly easy bosses too, apart from a couple.

And there was always the ever-present and easily purchasable Rocket Launcher from the Merchant.

The most difficult thing about the RL is fitting it in your inventory.

I guess I should just wait for the game to actually come out. But 100%, the PC version can never be above 30 FPS right? So the only benefit of going the PC route, is a bump in graphics? (I have 2 GTX 680s but at 2gb, and a 1600p monitor).

Basically, I'm really just considering getting this on PS4 digital.

Only Bitorez and Verdugo(if you count it as a boss) pose a real challenge, every other boss is easy as hell on Normal difficulties.

You will be able to run it at 60fps and without the black bars, but it's not recommended (they made the game targeting 30fps, so it may not work properly in 60)

If getting the PS4 version means atleast you'll support the dev team then do it,

I'm new to STEAM and PC gaming in general and decided to go the PC route with TEW, I was really hoping for official 60FPS support but with the recent news, I'm not swayed. I'll stick with it.

I personally think that the game gets better after the first few hours.

The issues regarding the alien AI are completely overblown, in my opinion. However, this is just my experience with the game. Others may differ.

It's not about the AI, it's the lack of the alien itself for most of the game. As for your first comment, if that's about SoM, it starts out kind of slow and then peaks right after you get the branding ability. Which is the halfway point.

Things like vampires and werewolves existed long before some sci-fi did. There was always a Jack the Ripper or Dracula story, plus antiques are around to show the popularity of such designs.

Yeah, I don't really get the point of this either. It's not like the majority of people into this stuff were even alive before modern sci-fi was mainstream. Lol, come on man. And if you want to get technical, there are probably more fans of Star Wars and Star Trek than there are of all of the most popular monster achetypes combined.

I remember Gigante giving me trouble because I didn't think of knifing the parasite and I ran out of ammo. I figured a sniper rifle would do more damage than anything else anyways, it's just logical right? fuckin video games

But yeah someone should try inputting the code from Vanquish:

At the title screen, rotate the Right Analog-stick clockwise or counterclockwise twenty times to unlock the God Hard difficulty. If you entered the code correctly, you will hear a sound.

And see if it unlocks the harder difficulties, heh.

Oh okay, I didn't see the update that you could run it at higher rates "at your own risk". LOL hmmm. I guess maybe I'll just wait a week and see what people in the PC performance thread say. I was about to pre-order this on PSN. But I'll just wait a couple days after release (damn that's going to be so hard). But at least I can then see which version is more right for me (since I'm paying full price for this).

I get it, but let's assume what's taken out of context and enjoyed by other people. Werewolves really weren't back in style until Underworld and Twilight started making them popular. They didn't reinvent the wheel, but they reimagined something old. Someone could take a history class or a book (etc) and enjoy seeing a few photos of another era. From that moment forward they're relating what they learned to a past beginning or when something came out with quality. If we get a good monster, we take everything about it, either be a historical monster, something that came out years ago, or something we've all experienced in our lives and we make it relevant. I can say Mass Effect added some things to my taste where Star Wars didn't achieve or where Star Trek didn't go, but I'm applying the logic to why I like ME to SW/ST. I take my love of the chainsaw person from Texas Chainsaw Massacre because it's my earliest depiction of that kind of maniac. That's where I was going. I think there's a sense of beginning with all horror, but it's how they make it relevant again or how they bring it back is what's important.

You can also see something old and relate it to something else. A special lighting or some sort. We have a sense of tradition by the past. Make a rubber mask of a famous killer and it might not make me remember the terror at first, but make me a mask with half its face chopped off and I'll probably relate it more to what scared me during a particular scene.

And you can always go back too if modern SciFi isnt entertaining you as well, so it works both ways.

What about U3 or whatever it's name is? The one where you drop the gates down? Remember it being a bitch of a fight the first time around.

Oddly enough I never had a problem with Bitorez.

I can get behind this being a huge horror movie fan. I grew up with 80's slasher flicks, and movies that jut messed with you concerning gore like The Thing, Evil Dead, etc. Though I also love a good ghost story or tale. So I'm pretty happy. :D

U3 fight is more annoying than challenging IMO. The second part of the fight i found it to be really easy because since is near the end of the game, my weapons are almost maxed out.

U3 is a pain in the ass on Professional though.

This still doesn't seem to have relevance to sci-fi vs whatever classic horror subgenre you think is somehow more deeply embedded into the collective consciousness or whatever.

And I still don't see your point. As far as I can decipher, you're just talking about something being modernized or changed enough to suit your (anyone) own tastes. Or basically why you personally have the specific tastes you do thanks to your own experiences. < I still have no idea how that's relevant.

Sure, and some wines obviously aged better than others but it kind of doesn't matter if most people don't even drink wine. I'm sure some might drink it and go "Yuk, this is some awful tasting grape juice" because that's the closest thing to wine they've ever had. Something being much older doesn't really have anything to do with its current popularity. Because if you want to get right down to it, almost all of the old school horror monsters are based off of myths and legends that almost no one remembers now anyway.

That's what I'm talking about.

I don't read sci-fi books nor do I go outside the norm because I had staple tastes from those genres growing up. They add up. If a classic was born from an older creation, they both stand at this larger acceptance, so you could say what can be based off one is already being based on the other. They are now equal.

I think fashion has shown that. Look at how many t-shirts show original designs of fantasy or horror, yet the person depicting them got into horror for another reason. Their social acceptance or what not is by the creation. They aren't 100% a fan of what they are saying they are enjoying. It's just another form of expression.

Verdugo is easy as shit. Before the fight you get a free rocket launcher. When he appears freeze him with a canister, shoot a rocket. fight over ... wait for elevator

but if you try anything else ... yeah he's difficult.

Yeah... but not knowing this, that first encounter was horrifying. So much frantic running back and forth trying to get off good shots, while making sure you got those QTEs down. It was terrifying. Then I learned about the rocket launcher... BLAM, he was dead.

I'm getting more and more tempted after I was unable to play Alien due to motion sickness :( Need a good scare! Have to get my heart pills and spray on standby pmsl!

But there are several people who have gotten the game early from shops who are posting impressions, and keeping this topic updated with the non-spoiler impressions.

Do we know the graphical differences between PS4 and PC? Playing a PC game at 30 would feel so odd I would rather a console.

PC version has the ability to unlock to 60 frames, remove black bars to run at higher resolutions, and, in all likelihood, higher fidelity settings (texture, aa, tesselation, etc).

Don't think there is much difference this time around, you get a solid experience on all platforms.

I believe the PS4 was the lead dev machine.

True, but personally, having to "hack" the game feels like a flawed experience. I wanted 1080p/60fps and that's why I pre=ordered the PC version, I still have my pre-order. Reading about an external studio handling the PC version makes me a bit sad.

Did you see this???

I have a 3gb HD7950 with 4gb VRAM available according to dxdiag, so I'm also concerned about the idTech5 performance on an AMD card.

They seemed pretty specific about it being actual Vram, not shared Vram. I just said fuck it and got the PS4 version as well as what I already had on PC. Just in case.
Listening to that video.

Hahaha. He's actually slurping. Yeah, okay. I'm done listening. Heard more than enough. It's full of gross.

I have no problem with a lack of puzzles. If anything they detract from the realism I'm trying to experience. I don't mind having to find my way through complicated mazes but I always found it silling coming across a puzzle where you have to turn a dial x-times or move a statue onto a floor switch just to progress.

Yeah my first try was the same. All though I directly noticed you could freeze him ... but somehow this sucker survived all my magnum bullets (must have been 10-12x). So I got mad, reloaded and fired the rocket in his face hoping that would be it. Because running around shooting something with a Magnum that refuses to die ... that was scary. I tought that another Nemesis just appeared that will chase me for the remainder of the game.

Really tempting to use the RPG on the dual Garrador fight though.
