think Brutal Legend, but replace metal with hip hop/rap.

Follow the same archetype of Brutal Legend's world design and replace it with key components of hip hop/rap and the culture its spawned. Different, unique regions and multiple styles segregated into factions much like BL. Style and shape the story into something akin to say, Getting Up. Then have that creative liberty of adding a somewhat mystic flair to the music, like with what BL did.

And replace the combat of BL and make it an action platformer.

Would you play it?

Sure, why not? As long as it doesn't glorify the percieved negative parts of the associated subcultures.

EDIT: For everyone who is quoting my original post, I meant that I would not want a developer to be guilty of stereotyping in their depiction of hip-hop culture.

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand 2 Confirmed.
Although I think this idea would work better with Pop music. The factions would be the fanbases. Little Monsters. Katy Kats, Barbz etc.

Metal and that ridiculous style were more to my preferences than hip hop/rap ever were, so it's not very likely versus just another metal open world game that swapped RTS with action platformer (Zelda-esque design?) this time around.

Though it may still be interesting to check out for one reason or another anyway, so I'm open to giving it a shot.
Didn't the Activision producers want Tim to do that when he was developing the game?
I think they wanted it transformed into a Guitar Hero spinoff. Which makes a lot of sense admittedly from the standpoint of marketing and detached execs but just completely screws it up as a creative product.

If the right artists were there, I'd buy the shit out of it.
Part of why I bought Blood on the Sand.

edit: not saying its the best of the genre, but saying it was something i could enjoy.

Pretty much these opinions right here. It'd be interesting to see what they could come up with. The commitment that Double Fine had to their metal world made Brutal Legend one of my favorite games of last gen, mediocre gameplay be damned.

Tim Rogers once talked about his idea for an open world basketball game that goes from streets to the NBA. Could fit the soundtrack.

I dunno, Brutal Legend worked as well as it does because Metal loves norse mythology, assorted monsters, dark stuff, massive opportunities for world and enemy design specific to the genre. What's hip hop/rap got that's not...highly problematic in terms of world and enemy design? Because the obvious locations and enemies are...not...going to go over well unless very carefully handled.

How is it problematic?

How much do you actually know about rap and hip hop

Hip-Hop was born/predated by a lot of earlier genres that could follow the same ideas that metal did. Like metal the stories were born out of the creativity of the lyrics.

Like you can have an area of a world devoted entirely to the 'slums of Shaolin' ala Wu-Tang. East Coast/West Coast culture clashing. Diplomats could be like an organization or something lol

I'd love to see another game in the vein of Jet Set Radio, though it won't be much like Brutal Legend like you describe.

I think Hip Hop moreso fits games that have more of a City/Metropolitan vibe.

Brutal legend worked because of the style and theme of the music involved as someone said above. I don't see how a rap version would work without basically just being Saints Row or GTA.

What consistent themes does it have that would make for logical locations, enemies/factions that wouldn't come off as highly exploitative? Closest I could think of (staying away from the ridiculous 50 cent games) would be...I dunno, Jet Set Radio?

Imagine if there was a game like Psychonauts except instead of it being about a white kid at summer camp with psychic powers entering people's minds it was about cartoon animals exploring worlds based on simple random themes like ice or haunted mansion. Would it still be commercially viable?

Edited above.

Wu Tang, Dipset, Public Enemy would be a good start essentially.

It's fine to say you don't see how it would work because of your limited knowledge of the genres, just don't attribute that to any creative failings of the genres.

I'm in.
That was the only thing I disliked about BL.
Which sadly was the majority of the game.
If this Hip Hop game was basically the demo but expanded upon it would be great.

A very wide range, really.
Off the top of my head, Hip-Hop has always had a bit of a love affair with martial arts flicks and samurai movies, as seen in many Wu-Tang Clan tracks as well as anime like Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai. Heck, the Def Jam games already had shades of this.

You would have to play as Clive Campbell aka DJ kool Herc and should be based in south Bronx, south south bronx. MC Shan would be the last boss.

Also there is a lot of fighting demons (inner demons) but it would be cool to take that literally. Also an Eazy E stealth game where you go around ganking people for loot. Yes. Or a Biz Markie sing along game like rock band.

A No Limit RTS game where Master P and fellow No Limit Soldiers battle against small time bustas and playa haters.

Day One!

Seriously a hip hop Brutal Legend would be good but the overall gameplay got to be RPG in my opinion. Imagine being a ultimate hip hop fan who goes to a Walmart and finds music that's considered "garbage. He gives up on looking for a good hip hop album and goes outside to get hit by a random car. He wakes up in this Mom and Pop store in the year 1994. He meets the cashier/love interest who introduces him to the owner who is voiced by Chuck D. He tells you that a big time corporation is trying to threaten his business and hip hop altogether. So you go on this big adventure filled with autotuned mushrooms, mainstream dragons, and goomba looking hypemen that'll stop you from meeting the evil corporation that's willing to put an end to the culture of hip hop all together.

Soundtrack will be provided by TDE, Outkast, LL Cool J, Killer Mike/El-P, Snoop Dogg, and many more :).

Because metal is full of positive stereotypes.

This varg vikernes guy seem like a standup fellow.

Even going with the more populist stuff you can have the eastern mysticism of the wu tang, and the genies and pimps of outkast.

MF doom can be the main villain he always wanted to be.
