Nintendo under shipment woes strikes again with Bayo 2.

This better not be happening. I was planning on picking up a discounted copy during the holidays.

You're looking at getting a secondhand copy because I wouldn't expect that in retail for a game like B2. There would have to be excess stock for that and I doubt retailers are taking the chance.

In stock at every bestbuy around me.

Same for me at every BB and Gamestop.

Not under shipment, OP.

The game is selling out. I'm talking COD numbers here. All those 10s man.

Huh. I preordered this at Gamestop because I thought this might happen.

Must be tough to gauge the demand for a game like this.

Damn

I was gonna pick Bayonetta 2 with my iPad air 2 on monday . hope its not sold out at best buy

Checking out best buy in store locator shows its in stock for pick up today so I'll put my order in to save a copy

But smh at no buy 2 get 1 free sales so far, wanted hyrule warriors too

It's sold out at the four Gamestops closest to me as well. It looks like it was under shipped because I can't recall this happening for any other recent game around here so quickly after release.

A local electronics chain (in Switzerland) had tons of copies when I checked earlier. Even 3 first print editions in one of their stores.

I think it's just shops not ordering too much aside from pre-ordered copies.
Nintendo has a record of under shipping 3DS and Wii U games. The gamestop near frequently doesn't receive enough copies to cover pre-orders and then suddenly weeks later they receive another shipment.

I bought it digitally because I didn't feel like tracking a copy down. I think the big retail stores around here only get a few of them. If you are looking for a Mario game that is all they have on the shelf. They don't even carry half the games available for the system past what little they got at the launch of the games. If I was really into disc based games I would probably pre-order Wii U stuff at a GS\EB Games due to this. My local mom and pop that had good trade in values closed and I don't feel like giving the games away to GS so I just went digital since I like to have everything right on the system and playable with a button press.

There were like 10 copies at my local Best Buy last night, heh. Pretty easy to pick up for me. I was actually kinda sad to see so many copies still sitting there.

Ditto. I was kind of worried it might be sold out but there were a bunch of copies on the shelf.

Anecdotal experience. My local GS seemed to have plenty, even of they did do their best to make me feel like I had committed a grave sin by not preordering.

In all seriousness if nobody preorders the game then they aren't going to carry a ton of copies. That makes plenty of sense.

Sadly this. If there aren't many copies, it's because retailers haven't ordered enough copies to fufill demand. There is not conspiracy. Our store only got around 10 copies and 7 of those were reserves.

Preorders are one way retailers determine how many copies of something to order. People not preordering Bayonetta means stores don't order means Nintendo doesn't ship.

Man, I lucked out so much at Target, then, I guess. I got the last copy and the guy who got it for me was cute.

Target is a magical place. I remember when the Gamecube released, I went out bright and early to Best Buy right before they opened *just in case* and to my horror there was already a line some 20 people or more long. The Target next door was already open, so I decided to check it on a whim. To my surprise they had half a dozen Gamecubes in stock. I grabbed one and high-tailed it home, the people in line at Best Buy none the wiser. Suckers.

Good job for telling them.

When I went to pick up my copy from Gamestop yesterday both the people in front of me where buying copies and the cashier told the second person that he got the last non-preorder copy.

For big-seller games, yeah. But in the case of Bayo 2 though there are shops that still hold copies of the game. I think Amazon still has stock (my friend just ordered a few hours ago in the US and will get his copy by Monday I believe). Maybe some retail stores are just being conservative.

This is a recent thing this generation. (Wanna pimp the eShop perhaps)

Nintendo has always shipped adequate copies of games before.

I'm sure they would want to ship more, but probably the DudeBro manager at GameStop is going all "lol Wii U, kiddie games" and orders the minimum amount of copies depending on preorders.

Store manager at gamestop told me basically that nintendo is very reserved when it comes to shipping games to stores. Certain games are fine (smash bros and zelda and mario), however games like bayonetta, wonderful 101, and others are essentially determined by preorders.

more preorders, more copies sent. store can get 10 preorders, and 1 extra copy for non preorder. Thats how GS is with nintendo. not sure about other retailers.

Because stores aren't ordering as many copies of their unknown games as before because those games aren't selling well anymore.

I mean, I feel like this is a genuine question I should ask since I kind of just presumed people knew the answer, but

Do you guys know how the store-publisher relationship works and why some games have more copies than others on shelves? Hint: If your answer includes "The publisher decides how many to send alone," then you're wrong.

I work at GameStop, we had 3 reservations (mine, and two other coworkers, which sucks), and only one extra. It went within the first hour we opened yesterday.

They did the same thing with Smash on 3DS. We had FOUR extra copies, and we didn't get more in until yesterday. We were sold out for 3 weeks and we had to turn people down left and right.

I was counting on something like the W101 deal(s), but perhaps you're right.

I see it available on Amazon.com. From what I can remember, it was one of the first places to be hit with sever undershipments last year, right after Fire Emblem: Awakening launched.

I think the preorder surge on Amazon happened far enough ahead of time (with the great reviews hitting) that they were able to get more stock from Nintendo. There's no doubt it's selling very well there.

Should've pre-ordered, might be different in America, but Nintendo only ships to retailers to cover preorders.

Lol not true in america. At toysrus we got 6 copies of bayo2 no preorders and they haven't sold yet. Just sitting there...

Yeah, while obviously not as big as Nintendo, even companies like niche publishers have said flatout "preorders are important." Because the stores won't order copies of a small game without much of them.

I went to Best Buy at opening yesterday and they only had five copies out, so not surprised. Would have gone digital but wanted the first for free and not a discounted price.

Every Gamestop and Best Buy anywhere remotely close to me has copies in stock. Tried to check Target but Target.com says that it's online only so I can't check store availability (wat). Might just be something in your area OP.

Doesn't Amazon deliver on release day?

Almost always. They do deliver reliably from most publishers but they had some trouble with Nintendo for a while. I wound up canceling orders for Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze as neither had even shipped the night before launch day. That finally seems to have been sorted out as I received Bayonetta 2 yesterday without any problems.

I reserved and Gamestop didn't get enough copies in to cover their reserves.

Someone update the board, we finally have a winner.

All you guys checking Gamestop stock online, remember that these numbers don't update instantly, so they could be showing the stock they opened with. Most likely meaning they don't have that stock any longer.

Bayonetta 2 on the eshop is only $49.99 bucks, Bayonetta 1 is discounted to $9.99 if you buy Bayo 2 making your total purchase $59.98 so it's the same price (cheaper by 1 penny)

He's lying and he's not even being shameless about it. Nintendo doesn't decide that, the corporate offices at Gamestop decide that. Let's say a Gamestop has 2 people who preordered Bayonetta 2. Chances are they're going to send enough to meet the preorders and maybe a few more for those rare people who didn't preorder a niche game. (If it's niche, always preorder.) Preorders dictate how many copies each store should get, and the person in charge of distribution for the various regions at the corporate offices are the ones who decide what stores get how many and how much excess stock they should have. Low preorders means there aren't many extra copies for non-preorders if any at all.
