RUMOR: New EAD Team Led By Koichi Hayashida

German website Nintendo-Online published a new article today with speculation about a potential third team over at Nintendo EAD Tokyo. Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land Koichi Hayashida director is said to be leading the new division. Assuming a third team exists, Nintendo-Online believes that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was the first project.

The speculation stems from Captain Toad’s credits. EAD Tokyo 2 producer Yoshiaki Koizumi is not mentioned, pointing towards a new group. This is further supported by a Japanese interview with Hayashida earlier this year in which he implied that he had received a promotion to producer.

I could see this being possible since Koizumi said in an April interview that the team had already begin work on their next Mario game.

Excellent news if true. That'll mean will be getting more awesome (and unexpected perhaps) quality spin-off games like Captain Toad in the future! Let's just hope that the actual EAD team doesn't separate too much while creating the next big 3D Mario game so they can continue bringing top notch quality titles like the Galaxy and Land/World series.

That'd be neat if so. EAD Tokyo is easily my favourite Nintendo studio - if not my favourite studio in general right now - so more from them would be great.

Plus, you know, Nintendo could use more teams making more stuff in general.

That would mean Koizumi isn't directing the new Zelda. :(

Nope.

As far as we are aware, it's Hidemaro Fujibayashi. He has directed Zelda: Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, Four Swords, Minish Cap and Skyward Sword. Aonuma as the producer.

Great. I've been hoping Nintendo would expand their AAA quality studios output. I wonder if they will continue to create Mario games, spin off Mario games or focus on another franchise.

That would mean Koizumi isn't directing the new Zelda. :(

Koizumi has not directed for years. He's a producer now.

Nope.

As far as we are aware, it's either Aonuma...or Hidemaro Fujibayashi is. He has directed Zelda: Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, Four Swords, Minish Cap and Skyward Sword.

Well, we don't know. The only person we are 100% sure works on this is Aonuma as Producer.

So...what? Koizumi is not in the new Mario team?
Is that supposed to be a good thing?

You're misreading it.

There are three Mario teams now potentially.

The 2D team in Kyoto-The New series

The 3D Team in Tokyo headed by Koizumi. Galaxy 1, 3DWorld, NES Remix 1/2

And now this will be another team Tokyo. Looks like Toad is their first project.

So then would that mean that another EAD game is in development that we don't know about?

EAD3-Captain Toad

EAD2-Splatoon

EAD1-???

Or are they the ones doing the Mario Kart DLC right now?

Didn't we recently see Miyamoto hanging out in the new Nintendo building from that amazing EDGE interview? A new EAD seems pretty likely (and fantastic). I hate to be that guy who begs for sequels, but Mario Galaxy 3 would be insane.

EAD 3 is the Zelda team, the OP is about a third EAD Tokyo team.

Personally I think Galaxy 3 is a lock simply because Miyamoto said he's interested in pursuing new challenges with the brand. And of course the nearly 20 million copies sold between the Galaxy games. That's always a big incentive to make more.

Can't say I would be disappointed. The Galaxy games are some of the best of all time.

Nintendo is a bit wacky with their designation of Director/Producer.

They don't use it like other gaming companies do.

No not really. Nintendo uses titles with serious designations. There are clear hierarchies, as necessary in a 1,000 man R&D group.

Senior Producer / Department Manager
Eguchi, Sawano

Producer / Group Manager
Konno, Nogami, Aonuma, Kimura, Sugiyama, Shimizu, Koizumi, Hayashida (?)

Project Leader / Director
Yabuki, Fujibayashi, Imamura, Matsunaga, Motokura, Hino, etc.

Planner / Game Designer
Fujii, Yamashita, Asuke, etc.

Designers, Programmers, Musicians, Supervisors, etc.

The ead teams making splatoon and wii sports and animal crossing and whatever else are different from ead tokyo. the regular ead (i think it's in kyoto?) has five teams already. EAD 1 is mario kart, ead 2 is wii ____, animal crossing, and now splatoon, ead 3 is zelda team, and the other two are stuff I'd have to look up.

ead tokyo is a different group of people that is currently only known to have 2 teams, but may have just changed to 3 if this rumor is legit. They're the 3d mario people.

Interesting.

Where is Tezuka?

This is what needs to be done more; legit new teams to work on more games.

But I thought the teams were:

EAD Tokyo 1 leader = Yoshiaki Koizumi
EAD Tokyo 2 leader = Takao Shimizu (he directed all three Pokemon Stadium games, the barebones original, the proper original, and Pokemon Stadium 2)
EAD Tokyo 3 leader = Koichi Hayashida (assuming this is true)

This is likely to be a Tokyo game.

Clearly I don't understand how EAD works. Thanks for the info.

How this has not yet happened, I don't know. But hopefully it does, and soon.

I don't think Nintendo will have any need to buy either one of those studios for the same reason they don't buy other third party developers such as Camelot (whose known for handling Mario Tennis, Mario Golf and Golden Sun) - both have long-term planned relationships with Nintendo for publishing projects via contract deals. This way, they rarely have to resort to working on rushed licensed IP projects to stay afloat.

Here's what Next Level Games said about its relationship with Nintendo back in June 2013:
"I think we’ve solidified our studio’s ability to collaborate with Nintendo to create high quality games. I am certainly excited to see what IPs we get to work on next! It actually feels like we already are [a apart of Nintendo]."
