Thank you. That motherboard's actually the one part that hasn't been delivered yet, then I'll inspect it. Could get a new one. Past what date does it need an update?

Depends on what revision of the motherboard you have. It'll say on the box "rev. 1.X" or something like that. I believe the "rev. 2" version of that motherboard has latest Haswell CPU support by default, as the "rev. 1.X" motherboard has a bios update that enables later Haswell support but "rev. 2.0" doesn't. According to the BIOS download page for "rev. 1.X", the update that included newer CPU support was May 2014. As long as your motherboard's date of manufacture was around that date or after that, it may be already able to support the i5 4460.

Worse case scenario, if it's an older revision and before latest CPU support was implemented, then you'll either need to return it for another motherboard (H97 is a good choice), or borrow an older compatible processor to do the update with before you can use the i5 4460.

Maybe you can check the product listing or ask the retailer or seller what revision the motherboard is.

Here's a larger explanation of the incompatibility.

If it will just be pulling HTPC duty, an i5 will be more than enough. You don't even need GPU for that. My i5 handles 1080p video/7.1 DTS-HD/Dolby with aplomb. If you want to game on it as well, your parts look pretty good from my reading. I think I'm going to upgrade my stock OEM box with a 970 and MX100 SSD. Down the road a bit I'll build a dedicated gaming rig and with the 970.

Looks like I'm going to get a 970 after Christmas to replace my 6950. Can't wait to go green again as some of their features have impressed me and it's going to be nice going back to a card that runs cooler which should help my smaller case. Only thing I'm worried about is that the 970 seems a little bit taller I believe but I should have enough room.

Does Unity run well enough on it? Was thinking that would be my free game as well.

It's going to be nice running games without issues again at 1080p. Now I just need to find some money to get a new hard drive and possibly get more memory. :D

Thanks to those of you who answered my questions about the 970 before.

I just pulled the trigger on this. I honestly didn't want to, as I wanted to wait until next year until the next revision of graphics cards came out, but I sort of needed to. I need a new development box at home. Planning to dual boot ubuntu and windows 8 on it, and use it for dev work as well as gaming.

Now I just have to find a monitor to buy two of that's a good deal.

Here's an equivalent hardware build as far as I could research the X8700. I looked for parts matching those specs and chose the lowest priced matches I could find. Comes surprisingly close to $800, although Dell's MSRP is around $1100.

Yes, the Dell has 4 x 4GB RAM and a Z87 motherboard with only one PCI-E x16 slot, I assume they didn't see the point in changing it to Z97 if a bios update was all they needed. It also has a GT 745, which is a custom OEM part Nvidia makes just for Dell. According to the specs, it's an improved GT 740 with higher clock and more memory, but same number of CUDA cores so not quite as good as GT 750. Included mouse and keyboard.

Information source links:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2047...tle-less-performance-for-a-lot-less-cash.html

For the cost, it's decent. It's as close to actual hardware cost as possible (for PC builders, not for Dell who buys these parts at a lower price), so if for some reason you just can't assemble your own, at least you're not getting ripped off on the value.

As a gaming PC... I wouldn't recommend this. The processor is fine, but the motherboard is low end and very limited. Likely a stock or near-stock heatsink, and according to PC World's review, the case has a single small fan providing all the airflow, which means when it heats it, it heats up good. All of the RAM slots are also filled up. Not that most people will ever need 16GB or more..

The graphics card is sorta OK. It's a very strong GT 740 with a lot of VRAM, but still a low-mid range card in terms of power. An $800 PC build can have a much, much stronger video card. If you're considering buying this PC and hoping to upgrade graphics later, you'll be limited by the 460 watt power supply.

The case is pretty normal as far as OEM goes. It's relatively small and compact, but cooling might be an issue because of that single 92mm fan. I can't say for certain, but the 92mm fan might be loud. Most 92mm fans I've seen are loud to compensate for small size and generally lower airflow.

Other stuff like card reader, DVD drive, and wifi capability I won't comment on as that's up to the buyer if they're wanted, and don't have much to do with performance.

I know this isn't a PC problem troubleshooting thread but I was wondering if someone can help me with this.

I'm having the 0x00000133 bugcheck/BSOD for 3 days straight now, as a matter of fact its almost at a 24 hour cycle since it happened in the same time of day all 3 times.

Searching online seems to have suggest that its something to do with the SSD, I have the Samsing 840 EVO (250GB) I downloaded the "Samsung SSD 840 EVO Performance Restoration" ~ 2 weeks ago and I think it updated the firmware and applied the fix, and my PC has been working flawlessly until the past 3 days.

The only thing that I downloaded other than that are Nvidia drivers and some windows updates but I'm not sure if those are related (and I can always do a system restore/rollback)

My specs:

i5 3570K 4.4GHz
GTX 670 2GB 344.75 driver
Samsing 840 EVO (250GB)

What is the consensus on building a laptop? I've built several desktops, but never a laptop. My wife wants to buy a new laptop, but after having the last few fail (one a Dell and the other an Asus), I'm tempted to build her one myself.

Is it super hard? Any recommendations on parts?

Before I bite, any last changes?
I want,
Small form factor (though if I sacrifice this for a much better build, I could live with that)
Play new gen games as well as/better than my ps4/xbox one
Keeping it on most of the day so I can use it as my plex server.

Possibly something like this

What's the best way to set up two monitors when I can't see both of them? I use Windows 8.1.

I used to mirror my PC monitor and TV since both of them were 1080@60 but I plan on getting a 120hz monitor so I don't think that will work anymore.

I have a 3770k and am replacing my 760 with a 970 that is arriving today. I have a pretty good SSD and plenty of RAM. Is my CPU going to be a bottleneck now, or can I comfortably expect 60fps max settings on most games at 1080? Do I need a 4xxxk CPU?

Bought an MX100 256GB from Amazon yesterday for £60. Been meaning to reinstall Windows anyway, as after messing about with windowsapps none of them loaded.

Installed it, everything up and running... except Origin. I got my entire system back to (pretty much) how it was, including all the junctions to keep everything on my D: drive and documents in about an hour and a half, but I've now been waiting 20 minutes for EA to send through my security code. You're slowing me down, guys!

Also, as much as I love 2 factor auth, I've never hated it so much than today. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, EA, Twitter, Blizzard... my phone's been awoken from sleep about 20 times to get a code.

There are very few CPUs better than a 3770K and they are only fractionally better. You should overclock if you haven't.

best fans for an h100i push/pull setup? I'm looking at the noctua industrials, but I'm not sure which ones I have to get for a push/pull. I need to look into static fans correct?

You probably don't want Noctua Industrials. They're loud and fast. If you're looking for something a little more balanced, go for the Noctua NF-F12 or NF-P12. Both are static pressure fans (static pressure fans basically have fatter fins with smaller gaps in between). Avoid the NF-S12 for Radiator usage, as it's not a static pressure fan. It'd work great as a general case fan though.

Do you guys have a recomendation for what brand and flavor of GTX 980 to purchase? Price isn't an issue.

I personally have the ASUS Strix 980, and I recommend it. It idles at ~50C, which shocked me at first, but then realized the fans don't run at idle. The fan is even quiet when it ramps up under load. So if noise is a concern look at the ASUS.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for this write up. You convinced me it'll probably be better to build my own a little later down the line.

=)

So even though I've been PC gaming for quite a whileI I've never taken the time to overclock. I have an I7 4770k and was wondering if I OC it to 4.5 - 4.7 ghz if I'll see a real performance increase in games or if its not worth the time.

Download bluescreen view. It will allow you to read the last BSOD messages. In the message there should be some reference to a driver or system file that caused the error. This'll provide a starting point for troubleshooting. Post what file is the cause.

The first one was caused by nvlddmkm.sys while the last two were caused by HDAudBus.sys (with nvlddmkm.sys being also a red highlight in both of those)

So I guess it is the Nvidia driver after all ?

So I'm OC my GTX 970 now.

I'm doing by using PrecisionX to overclock while using Heaven 4.0 to test the GPU.

I'm following this guide.

It seems a lot simpler than CPU overclocking. I assume I up the voltage when my computer crashes just like the CPU?

Also once I hit "apply" in PrecisionX, that means my GPU is locked to those speeds even when my computer restarts? I don't have to open the application every time I start the computer and set it right?

Hey guys, have there been problems with the drivers of AMD Radeon R9 280X concerning HDMI? Tech guys at store who built my PC telling me the crashes I been getting might be due to that or fault memory or a myriad of other things. :s

Yes. Use Display Driver Uninstaller to remove the driver completely. This utility should also prevent Windows from automatically downloading and installing an older driver from Microsoft at login, a process that just adds confusion most of the time.

Once the drivers are removed, get the latest one for your GPU from http://www.geforce.com/drivers

Anyone help me ;please? :)

If you're talking about a case fan, it doesn't really matter. Depending on your motherboard's features, you might be able to control the fan speed. Otherwise, connecting it to the PSU with a molex connector will have it at 100% all the time, which may or may not be annoyingly loud, depending on the fan you've got.

The RAM I had already bought it two years ago and its still sealed so I will settle with that, but I'm still missing the case and power supply.

For the case since I will buy these components in a trip to the US and then bring them back home, I would like a small form factor but without sacrificing too much air ventilation, so if a mATX case is not possible then a regular one is fine. There are a lot of cases listed in the OP so I'm kinda lost about which one to choose.

Then there is the PSU, from what I read 550w would be enough, and I don't think I would be doing SLI any time soon but I think going 750w is a good idea for future proofing.

Basically any recommendation about good components is appreciated, just keep in mind that I'm trying to not get too expensive so budget recomendations that don't sacrifice too much are welcome.

EDIT: forgot to add that I'm also interested in running dolphin games at 1080p+ and 60fps and I know dolphin is more CPU bound, so that CPU would be enough or should I go for something better?

If I get a ssd what to I need to do to get windows on it while keeping the stuff I have on my 1tb to untouched?

I'd like to know this as well. I just want to migrate windows 8.1 over. I upgraded my windows 8 from 7 when they were doing that promotion for really cheap so I don't even know how to do a clean reinstall.

i saw monitors on the first post , so i'd like to ask

right now i'm considering new monitor, started with asus and i compared all the models in their site and finally reduced the list to these options:

VX248H for $200.63 after importing costs

VG248QE for $294.64 after importing costs

VN247H-P for $217.38 after importing costs

VS278Q-P for $293.66 after importing costs

i know it's not a break dealer, but all of them including speakers as i'm not ready to buy sound system anytime soon

as for acer, i found this model,
GN246HL Bbid for $270.19 after importing costs
it's without speaker but i like that it's 100M contrast ration compared to asus's 80M contrast ratio

and for benQ, in respect of this thread:
XL2411Z for $330.99 after importing costs
but isn't it more expensive for a 12M contrast ration compared to other's 80M-100M ratio ?

there're other options in acer , benQ and viewsonic but i didnt bother to search unless someone recommend me something

i dont want to pay premium , but i'm fine with these range of prices.

to be honest, 'FOR NOW', i dont think i'll get the full benefit of 1ms respond nor +60hz refreshing, but i already have an old LG 23' monitor with TN panel and 5ms respond if not slower
so to buy a new one it should beat the old one and keeps serving me for years, or else i'd rather save my bucks for much later time, maybe new models would come later on with newer features.

btw, my VGA is AMD R280x, so i'm out of luck with any 3D feature included cause it's for Nvidia , in general i don like this feature even if my VGA is supported

so what are your thoughts?

Thanks for your help, I do actually have the latest driver, I guess it didn't install right or something got messed up somehow, I'm just gonna roll back to the 344.60 one.

Should I unplug my pc from the internet while I do this just to be extra safe about windows not intervening ?

Display Driver Uninstaller prevents Windows from automatically installing drivers. So its not needed to disconnect from the net. Just press the "restore windows update" option in DDU after you finish installing the new drivers.

My case has a front cover /w pop out bay doors for the ODDs, so I just popped off the front cover, threw the drive in, popped the front cover back on without even looking (lol) and went. Booted into my bios to check that it was recognized and turned on, yep. Booted windows and tried opening it, and was met with the *clickclick* sound a drive makes when it opens and immediately shuts. Me: "what the...", popped the cover flap for drivebay one down and YEP it was upside down v_v

lol me xD

I laughed, way way too hard at this.

:D
