Have you actually stress tested with something like Aida64?
Are you manually setting the VCore? Otherwise the BIOS will jack up Vcore to silly amounts.

Yes to stress test and manually adjusted everything via bios including voltage to Vcore.
Using H100i for cooling.
It depends on laptop lines and price range? I haven't looked at laptops in the last few years, but Asus and Lenovo come to mind for decent products and value.
I found this laptop brand review ranking, and I mostly agree with it, although there seems to be some bias towards Apple (or maybe I'm biased against Apple, I think the prices are too high and for that I even don't consider them). I think Sony should be a bit higher, though.
Hynix is supposed to begin HBM production in Q1 2015, so I don't think 380X/390X will release before that.
Framerate isn't usually affected by the hard drive. Maybe its your graphics settings? That's a very light overclock on the i7 930, you should be able to get 4GHz out of it, it might be holding back the framerate (World of Warcraft is said to be CPU bound). Someone posted that they are getting about 50-100 FPS playing on 4K downsampled to 1080p on a GTX 970, so sub 60 is pretty poor for a GTX 970.
I've got a Define R3, so that looks like a great improvement.
What games are you playing?
Have you checked RAM usage while playing games? if you're not hitting high usage, then I wouldn't bother adding more memory. Adding DDR3-2400 won't be a good idea for two reasons. If you mix it with the DDR3-1600 already in your computer, it will all run at the lower 1600MHz. If you remove the older 1600MHz ram, then higher clocked memory still doesn't do much to improve framerate when using discrete graphics anyway, according to Anandtech's testing.
The i5 2500k can still be a potent processor. I assume you haven't overclocked it - for a relatively low cost, you can get more performance out of it by overclocking, you just need to have a decent CPU cooler. There are many guides out there. What's your budget for a new cooler?
I don't recommend a CPU (and motherboard upgrade) either. You'd be paying a lot ($300+) for a moderate CPU power upgrade, and you could get similar gains by just buying a CPU cooler for $30-100 and overclocking.
Here's a starting build to work from. Unfortunately I'm not clear on UK pricing, so assume my parts aren't sales prices. If you see any deals that are cheaper than the price of the parts I've listed, then they might be worth considering.

I recommend the Corsair H105 over the H100i. If you want to go compact, then I recommend an mATX motherboard and case. That Corsair PSU is overpriced for now, there are better deals like this fully modular gold rated EVGA Supernova G2 750 watt for $100. For 850 watts, there's the Antec HCG M for the same price, although it's bronze rated and only partly modular.
Here's my take on your build. All that's missing is a case. Or you can go with the much more cost effective solution that LilJoka helpfully made three build lists for.
Great to hear that you got it up and running. yes, you'll be able to connect to a wifi network with a wireless dongle. Make sure to install the drivers, a fresh Windows install probably won't have drivers for the USB dongle.

Picked up an MSI GTX 970. Currently doing some testing but it hit 1500/8000 with ease. Don't wanna mess with the voltage so I'll leave it there.
I've heard complaints with regards to coil whine. Is that during normal gameplay or those instances with ultra high frame rates (like closing unigine). That's the only time I've noticed it.

It's just older, that's all. The 850 Pro is newer and replaces the 840 Pro's old spot in Samsung's SSD lineup. They're both similar, but the 850 Pro pulls ahead in a couple of tests.

Hybrids are relatively pointless. The gains are minimal for the cost. If you're going to go for a mechanical, just go for a mechanical and get yourself the extra storage space.

RAM speed certainly does effect certain games. Battlefield 4 seems to really love high speed ram. I would take the h100i over the h105 any day. Corsair link is enough for me to choose the h100i.

You don't want to cheap out on the power supply. I recommend the XFX TS 550 Watt PSU for $55, it's manufactured by Seasonic, so it's excellent quality.

For the right price, high speed RAM is an easy buy. It's been pretty easy to find 2x8GB of 1866MHz to 2400MHz on sale for less than $140 USD.
As for the water cooler, the H100i is reported to have issues with backplate mounting that can cause high temperatures if incorrectly done. Not a deal breaker, but a cause for concern. Corsair Link can be handy, but the H105's thicker radiator (permitting mounting room in the case) and slightly lower price make it a better recommendation to me.
Where is the h105 cheaper? Refurb h100i goes on sale for 65 all the time. Amazon(iirc) had the h100i on sale for 80. I don't think the h105 offers enough cooling benefit over the h100i for most people that it's worth losing link over.

Trying to pick a CPU for my girlfriend's build. She doesn't use it for too much, internet, youtube, maybe some music, perhaps some very light gaming she says. Obviously an i3 would be fine for her for now but I wonder if I should just go for an i5 for longevity.
She doesn't even have a desktop right now so I doubt she will upgrade it over time aside from maybe my hand-me-downs. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I'd personally go with the i5, but im sure shed be fine with either.

This seems like a pretty good deal.. is this card pretty similar to a 970 in terms of performance? Because I'm looking at getting a new card and the 970 all seem to be in the $350 range, where the price of that 290 is more appealing.
I'd honestly just spend the extra money and get a new one. I'm pretty sure there are 120gb ssds going for about the same price as that refurb
You'll lose about 5-8% performance, but it will cost you up to 150 bucks. The xfx 290 was 215, the tri x 290 was 205. I'd go with the 290

Hmm, looks like I was wrong, I wasn't looking at mail in rebates. The H105 is on sale for $95 at NCIX US, while the H100i currently goes for $100 but can have a $20 mail in rebate applied.
I don't know about refurbished, that's up to the person buying the parts. He had a brand new H100i on his list so I suggested the H105 instead. The H105 has PWM fans, so the lack of software doesn't bother me as much.

It really depends on what you're using the computer for and what games you play. If you play a lot of battlefield 4 then absolutely. If you do content creation, absolutely.
Idle temps are probably fine depending on ambient, what are your load temps?

I have not tried load yet. When Uplay loads or when I install a program, it rises up a bit.
What about my GPUS SLI? Is it normal? It was 50 at first but now it is 45....

There's 16GB DDR3-2400 for $135. Wait, I should mention, this runs at 1.65 volts. As always, check compatibility. There's no clear consensus, some people prefer 1.5v, others are fine with 1.65v. I believe the latest Intel CPUs have 1.65v compatibility (through XMP)?

Not really, I just picked a decent looking case I saw in the ad. I'm really not looking anything specific.
But thank you for the links! I just picked the RAM because I saw a lot of suggestions for it, and the power supply was suggested by another friend.
No problem. Ripjaws is popular RAM that can be found for low prices, but the metal heatspreaders do take up a lot of space, that's all. You could still use it with the CPU cooler, you'd just have to mount the fan higher, out of the way.
The EVGA 500B power supply isn't necessarily bad. The reviews say it's decent entry level PSU, well priced, but nothing special. My suggestions save you money on the RAM but spend more on the power supply. You could go with the faster 1866MHz RAM and the EVGA power supply to save money and it'll be fine. I personally believe that a good power supply is worth the money though, so I usually stick to Seasonic or other comparable models.
As for the case, if you wanted to save money, look at the Corsair 200R for $50. Smaller, but still functional. The Fractal Define R4 is available for $70 and emphasizes silence.
The Antec 900 isn't a bad case, though. I wonder what version it is, there's newer V2 and V3 versions, but those are normally called Antec Nine Hundred Two.

So I used MSI AB to overclock my 970(172/500), gamed for a while, completely stable at max 68 degrees. But after a while AB doesn't detect my 970 anymore, only the onboard 4600. However other programs still see the 970 and the card still functions the same in games and benchmarks. Restarted the machine didn't fix it. Anyone ever had the same thing happened?
Also how loud a XFX TS 650W is supposed to be? Mine is quite audible during idle.

I am thinking of replacing my aging 2006 era PC with a more modern build, can you guys give me some advice as to how this build looks for gaming purposes primarily (1080p) and possibly future-proofing as much as possible?

OK I just started playing AC Unity. CPU were below 50 degrees but GPU 1 is between 79 to 80 (max is 81) and GPU 2 is 68 SLI. Is this normal?

I guess. That's the optimal set up I tried based on my build. I did a push pull on the radiator fan cooler on the top right of the case to push out the hot air on the rear.
So am I in danger of overheating?

Are you going to be reusing any parts from your old PC? The Define R5 is now out, it's a great improvement over the R4 but does cost $120-130. I think it could be in your budget if you're going to spend $1000 on a new PC.
Yeah, prices are changing kind of frequently now with sales lasting just a few days. To be clear, that RAM runs on 1.65V, so make sure to check compatibility.

I was actually thinking about that. I do photography and video editing in my spare time, so I figured the i7 would be a better deal in the long run, and I can upgrade my video card once the 980 goes down. I'm stuck, because those are the two items I'm trying to get on Black Friday. Maybe I should just go for the i5 and the 970.
