To be fair, it certainly had the potential. Incompetence by 343i and poor word of mouth really spoiled what should have been a celebration of the Halo franchise. Shame. I doubt Microsoft would have let them delay the game either, not if it meant missing the holiday shopping season.

In 343's defense, they didn't do any of the work. It was contracted out.

Absolutely not, but I don't think people were gonna buy 399 Xbox Ones regardless. I always saw going back to 350 as inevitable.

And yeah, Microsoft had to make major cuts, but the devastation for that probably settled in long ago when they made the decision to make major cuts.
The Xbone wasn't selling badly at 399, it was just not selling as well as the PS4.

Now it'll actually do bad.

Wasn't expecting 3DS numbers to be low enough for Nintendo not to comment. We'll probably see prices fall over the next few weeks due to excessive stock.

Had gamers done good it wouldn't have been on the chart at all.
It was bundled with a million XB1 consoles though.

True, that is true. I retract my thankfulness toward gamers :(

I don't understand why you're looking at this just from the perspective of a console war. Yeah, if you're looking at this as Sony vs. Microsoft then you're right, but just in terms of sales Microsoft was likely extremely successful this holiday season. If Microsoft met their sales number goals than they're going to be happy, Sony vs. Microsoft doesn't matter in anything other than fanboy wars as long as Microsoft can still secure positive third-party relations and solid sales. If both the PS4 and the Xbox One sold over 1 million then both consoles "won".

It's not a console war, it's from the perspective of a business objective.

They can talk whatever they want, but Microsoft internally is not happy that PS4 is dominating them even at a higher price with no games packed in than MS is typically month-to-month, nor are they going to be happy that they went so deep into their pockets to slash XBO price with multiple games included and only barely edged out PS4. You don't take drastic measures like that if your only expectation is to barely win over your competition, who is still higher priced. Because remember, due to the slashed price, they have to sell considerably more units to make the profit worth it.

Did they sell enough units to do that? Admittedly, we'll have to see if we get hard numbers to tell that fact. If they both sold 1.5 million, then yeah at least MS from a business perspective can say they met some of their objectives.

But it does mean now they are in a tough spot strategically. Their price cut only allowed a barely-there victory in a single month. It's almost certain PS4 will win December NPD, and then all months after. And if XBO goes up in price, will consumers react by purchasing even less of XBO in off-holiday months than usual? It's a real possibility

Dam Sony ain't a joke

I say rebrand the Wii U as Wii HD and put out some mature titles along with the E rated stuff.

Should help out a bit.

I think the Wii name is the real problem. People instantly associate it with the one they have in their cupboard and haven't used in years.

Hopefully Ninty look elsewhere when naming their next console.

I can't think of a good PR statement for Sony, because saying "we almost won while not cutting our price" doesn't sound good, while in reality with how close it was - it's awesome.

What devastating costs? Are you a MS stock holder? Do you know their detailed financial plan?

It comes down to this, the brand is healthy and you guys are talking out of your ass.

It is pointless discussing MS stuff with Amir0x when he's in full fledged anti MS mode.

EA must not be happy.

Y u no buy Dragon Age, people?!?!

The irony is that when EA finally makes a great game such as DAI, literally nobody buy it and don't chart. But when they release broken-ass/unfinished games, they stay on charts for 3 or 4 consecutive months... Sigh. DAI desserves to be there instead of Ass Creed! At least is nice to see that the massive fail launch of Unity truly affected their sales.

Not really. Last gen hardware sales are falling off sharply. Current gen hardware sales are fairly flat (forgot what they were last year), or at least not massively higher.

Right, forgot about PS3/360 sales, that makes sense. Just figured current-gen sales might be up somewhat thanks to Black Friday plus general increased affordability plus bundles plus (theoretically) actually having games now.

Did Microsoft give a date for when they were supposed to be selling the Xbox at full price again? It'll be interesting to see what happens there, wasn't expecting them to raise the price again but even if they were stupid enough to do that it really can't be an option any more.

It should be obvious to anyone now that by limiting the 20th Anniversary PS4 to 12.3k units and waiting until PSX to sell them, Sony really shot themselves in the foot.

25k units and a November launch, and this generation would be going very differently right now.

Always have faith in cboat

cboat was one of the original leakers talking about xbox 360.

I wish he'd drop in with some positive news :(

There first party situation is a bit of a mystery at this point, and it'd be nice to hear something from the inside regarding it. Mainly Rare...

On the contrary, I'd imagine they see setting a new sales record for the system as a big success, regardless of how Sony did.

Losing 54 million dollars to "outsell" your competitor by 10k is a fools errand. That number assumes $60 difference between standard and sale prices and "900k" consoles sold. If less consoles sold then the number would go down. If you include the cost of the games included then the number goes up. (not even taking into account games included)

Would a million PS4's be a record number for a Sony console? If so, that's an easy PR puffer.

odd to see pokemon games separate but not smash especially since smash wii u is a completely different beast compared to to the 3DS version

also shame on wii u numbers. yeah if anyone wanted this console. they probably already have it. if anyone wanted the next zelda, they probably already own this console.
.

price drop ninty ..but that still wont' help them in this situation lol. neither will dropping the wii u and making a more beefy console

If US/UK was that close I am sure they won worldwide, could simply say something like that or provide an update on their LTD numbers.

At least 8 mio buyer thinks otherwise. And Nintendo probably makes already a lot of money with this thing and its software.

Nintendo earned more money with the GC than Sony with the PS2, despite the big sales difference.

i am sorry, what? is this real or are you pulling stuff out of your behind

Devastating to the product.
Devastating to the Xbox brand.
Devastating to the gaming division of Microsoft.

Not so devastating in the entirety of Microsoft.

There are many ways to fillet this fish.

Where are you getting your numbers from? How could you know any of this?

The problem is that they can't afford to do this. Dem Gamepad manufacturing costs. And they don't seem to want/be able to drop the Gamepad (which is probably the biggest issue at hand).

It's absolutely time to drop the gamepad and rebrand as the "WiiUPro" at $150 and patch all existing software to work with the WiiU Pro Controller and pack two in.

Hell, pack Mario Kart 8 pre-installed, Wii U without gamepad, and two Pro Controllers for $200 and you have a winner.

Well my predictions are dead and buried. Shouldn't have been swayed by the antedotal retail musings

Too optimistic on Wii U, too pessimistic on XB1/PS4, PS4 especially

Oh well
Don't fret there's a lot of us in that same boat. Can't believe I thought XBO would do 507k tho; my math wasn't that wrong but you can't calculate people.
