NPD Sales Results for November 2014 [Up3: NPD Data Error, AC:U #5]

Dude why you being so hyperbolic, You could get and X1 for $350 with about 3 or 4 games and you could get a PS4 for $399 with about 3 or 4 games, its not the biggest difference, sony Could of had a small loss to.

Are sony really in a position to drop there price?, I remember at launch Andrew House saying that they were glad MS didnt undercut them because they couldn't go lower then $399, a year later and in some cases they were giving away 4 games, of about $100 worth of value, I doubt they will be able to do much more then that.

I dont think we will see the PS4 undercut the X1 in price, it may be the same but not lower.

Anyway I think the sales figures are very positive for everyone it shows sony,ms and Nintendo what consumers want.

Hyperbole? Microsoft has had to continuously tweak their messaging and lower their price since the launch a year ago just to reach this moment. Xbox One has only won NPD once prior to November 2014--and that was due to Sony being unable to meet the PS4 demand in December 2013.

Of course Sony wants to keep the $399 price point as long as it remains viable--and the fact that PS4 managed to sell 2/3 of what Xbox One did in November without changing the price point says a lot. Does Sony want to drop their price to $349? No, but it is an inevitability. The question is, when will they price drop. There are only two logical answers:

1--When they have sold all the PS4s they can at the $399 price point
2--When Xbox One consistently begins to outperform PS4 sales

Also, at what point did I ever state that Sony would undercut Microsoft's price. I specifically stated that Sony could drop the price of the PS4 in response, I never once spoke of undercutting the Xbox One price point. You put words into my mouth I never said to generate your own narrative, and then claim I am the one using hyperbole. Stay classy.

Genuine interest here.

Did they?
Forza
MCC
Titanfal
SSOD
Four biggies this year. What's next year?

have no clue since none of the first party output has interested me other than SSOD and yes I realise third parties will help carry them as they have carried Sony this year but the big ones are tied to Sony marketing (?)

We know they already have Halo 5, Fable Legends, Tomb Raider, and Quantum Break as their big games for 2015 so far. That's four games already. The Xbox One is out of its first year period and therefore MS will more than likely be revealing some games that will come out in 2015 around or during E3 (similar schedule they used with the Xbox 360).

Forza 6 should be coming based on the series' two year pattern and the fact that I'm sure MS wants something to compete with a possible GT7 (though I don't think GT7 will come out in 2015). Definitely think there will be 2-3 more "big(ger)" retail titles too.

Very positive that 2015 will be better than 2014 for both the PS4 and Xbox One.

Their big games were MCC, Froza, Titanfall, SSOD and their biggest sellers they release in November. Instead of spreading them out. Also having alternating Forza games is not a good idea. Spread it out more.

Look at the games they released in a years time. Dead Rising 3 was a big game, Titanfall they pushed hard, Forza pushed hard, and so was SUNSET.

They don't have anything till the same time frame next year. Quantum Break is a Q3-4 game, forza is in OCT-NOV, and Halo 5 is November.

What do the have for first 2 quarters? Evolve push? Sony has The order:1886, then BloodBorne, then MLB:The show, then bunch of smaller release games like The Tomorrow CHildren, Grim Fandango is in January, and Broken age follows.

Then in fall you've got Uncharted 4, possibly Ratchet and clank depending on where they are on that game.

Scale Bound and Crack down are 2016 games at the earliest. gears of War HD collection would be great for Microsoft.

Fable Legends looks like it will be a Fable Journey issue, where people fans of the series will be put off.(According to what people played at E3)

I looked into other thread and Microsoft better have some kind of Killer Bundle next year like they did this year, and depending on financials in 2015, if they are not selling software we may not see as big of deals.

Just my 2 cent's.

I can definitely see The Witcher 3 bundle coming in May at $350 (or $329 if they want to push hard)

As for Rise of the Tomb Raider, its probably gonna get bundle too at Sept or Oct and gonna rock that month.

Quantum break is almost ready and been mention several times that its gonna be 2014 game, I can expect either as a summer blockbuster or Oct-Nov holiday game. Bundle must happen too.

As for November I can bet 99% that we will get Halo MCC + Halo 5 bundle at $299 that gonna explode the holiday season sales.

What's a number that makes sense when you only consider "337," and not implying any extra numbers (33.7 / 337,000 / 3.37 million / etc.)

Oh right, I thought u meant Sony responding would be them undercutting the X1

and I thought u were exaggerating with this:

''significant losses MS had to incur to move those 1.2M Xbox One's this holiday. Meanwhile Sony sold over 800K PS4s without giving away the store.''

Where did u get the ''significant losses'' from?
and yeah sony were $50 more expensive, they still had bundles that could of cost them some losses.

MS won nov with some losses, sony lost nov with less losses then Microsoft, in terms of profit I dont know which one came out on top most likely sony, however as far as Microsoft is concerned im sure they would of rather had more consoles sold and higher losses(within reason) then less consoles Sold with less losses.

This price cut would of been an acceptable cost for MS, planned way in advanced.

Anyway sony still sold more world wide so the sony musketeers (house, shu, boyd, cerny) will still be riding gallantly along.

What's funny is MCC hasn't had a big impact, or one that I would say was really positive.

And Depending on what Microsoft has planned for Windows 10 and Xbox one, will determine if they are willing to eat margin again next year, because they have the more expensive built box.

People are worried about Halo 5, especially after MCC debacle. Tomb Raider depending on how much they show in previews 2015 will give us a better idea of when to expect the game. But I would assume a game like that will be fall to combat Uncharted.
If Naughty Dog shows an amazing Multiplayer at E3 along with a Single player demo, then it's going to be on HALO 5 for Microsoft.

And your only counting big games, Sony has tons of smaller Mid-tier games like fan Favorite's like Grim Fandango, Broken Age etc.
Those are early 2015, then you have The:Order1886 depending if you are excited or not, then Dying Light for third party, then Bloodbourne in March and MLB the show to follow.

Plus if everything is to be on track Ratchet and Clank would be fall 2015. But it depends on the state of development for that game could be a early 2016 game.
I just see more from SOny and even Nintendo. X chronicles, Zelda, Starfox are 2015 games. Not to mention MArio MAKER.

If the execs at MS are ok with losing another Billion dollars or so then yes we'll see some crazy bundles. But I do know that Xbox is bleeding money hardcore and their clauses in place are keeping PC/Indie titles from filling up the gaps in their lineup.

Maybe just me but the hardware cult in this thread seems to have overtaken the software chat. For Ubi this seems like a terrible month; Far Cry did not stand out and ACU performed poorly considering the last gen game did not chat.

I'll have to interest myself in the Xbox brand then.

Sony should run promotions where they pack in a years free PSN and a first party game, not only would that be a tempting offer but the value to the consumer would grow throughout the year. When it comes to renew they the consumer would have 12 months of PSN games that will increase the incentive for them to carry the sub on and Sony would then reap the benefits.

I was really interested in the MCC discussion, but it appears that I have missed the boat on that or it didn't happen at all.

I assume charting at 10 has it below 500k copies?

Fair enough.

"Significant losses" is referring to the loss leadership strategy MS is using--selling the console itself at a loss and then giving away at least 2 free games (3 in some cases, depending on which store/site/promotion used, as well as free giftcard offers also listed in this thread (again, these seem limited to certain retail channels). Overall, that is a large subsidization of the console. Microsoft is gambling that they will make profit over time in additional software sales and Live revenue from each customer they sell an Xbox One too under this structure. That in and of itself is generally how the business works--the case is that Microsoft is punting the profit line further down the field than Sony is with the PS4. Sony did have bundles themselves--but really the only thing that is a gamble for them is GTAV TLOU:R was included in the same bundle. The latter probably doesn't cost much, as TLOU has pretty much sold what it is going to sell at this juncture.

You are correct that Sony is still winning worldwide and is likely unimpressed by Microsoft's November NPD victory. Perhaps if these results continue into a trend, Sony may consider a price drop of the PS4 hardware. But December sales are uncertain right now--MS still has the Xbox One price drop on its side, but Sony now has the announcements and news from PSX, such as Street Fighter V console exclusivity, to bolster interest in their platform. At the end of the day, both boxes are going to sell very well this holiday season.

I think what all this amounts to is that while Microsoft may be healthier as an overall corporation, Sony's gaming division is performing better than Microsoft's. Sony needs its gaming division to continue to do well for the company's overall survival. Whereas at Microsoft, I imagine there is only so much money their shareholders will allow them to throw at the business model without ROI.

Someone explained that NPD can't reveal specific data from one store.

Ah crap...will have to wait for GfK then. But I think(read hope) it did really well. Never seen so many on twitter and Eurobased boards post Vita/ToHR pics since...well never.

Cyber Sleuth needs to be a thing here.

Broke MP can hurt the legs.

I just checked -- 2 and a half stars average rating on amazon cannot be helping this game, and word of mouth can't be very good.

It's still selling well, it seems, but it's also currently $15 off.

Ugh, such a squandered opportunity.

I think it did okay for what it was but it would surely have charted higher if it worked an I suspect it would have charted no lower if it was a Halo 4 next gen edition only (and possibly higher as that would mean it was working!).

With One sales it seems as with PS4 first party games mean only so much but third party drives sales.

I think Sony first party games had sold really well so far up until the Drive Club/LBP3 flops. Will interesting to see how The Order 1886 and Bloodborne sell without much competition early next year.

Wow, MS is aggressive as hell. They went all out and it worked, at least for this month. I'm really happy that I was part of the process. I got my XB1 and I have like 5 AAA quality games. MS probably saved the XB1 and things should be a lot more competitive from here on out.
