DirectX 12 GPU exclusive features to be shown/announced at GDC

It appears we are getting some new hardware based upgrades as well.

These are not the power or CPU based upgrades shown so far.

"To get the full support of DX12 will users need to get a new graphics card?"

To get the "full benefits of DX12," Ybarra replied, "the answer is yes."

"There will be DX 11.1 cards that take advantage of a lot of the driver and software tech that we're bringing in Windows 10, but if you want the full benefits of DX12, you're going to need a DX12 card."

The confusion seems to lie in the difference between full support of DX12 features and support of some DX12 features.

When I went back to Microsoft to get a better sense of that difference a company spokesperson told me that there are a handful of rendering pipeline features that are new in DX12 that we will be outlined at GDC. They added: "The power and frame rate wins we demonstrated come from improvements in CPU usage in the OS runtime and device drivers. And this was on DX11 devices."

buyers of 970/980 are going to be pissed.
In hindsight, it will be awhile for windows 10 to come out right?

Its not even a big deal. Games are still using direct x 9c... it will be years before games start using only d12 or taking massive advantage of it.

Ugh, hate that you have to have a specific OS AND a specific GPU to have access to new features of the API, as a developer that fragmentation is just horrible, even though I don't develop for DirectX.

It's not unfeasible none of them do and thus the ones that do aren't announced yet.

Then why not say that? They seem to be beating around the bush to what seems to be a very easy question, the fact that there are already games in development on DX12 would make it seem that it's far enough for this to be known.

Thinking the new line of DX12 cards will be when I make my new build. I'm excited to see what's coming.

Why can't they just say what cards support everything, honestly the weirdest hardware related thing in ages imho.

Surely if they are supported it would have been said by now. Beginning to think they are hiding the info so 970/980 sales aren't affected.

Who knows, maybe there's some retarded contract BS that keeps them from saying anything until after Microsoft announces things for DX12.

So as not to lower sales of existing cards.

It's a good thing that I already put into my plan to buy a new GPU for Oculus Rift CV1 when I bought my 970 then :)

With that said, I doubt any user out there will miss these new DX12 features for a couple of years or more yet.

I don't think this would hit 970/980 sales too much, given the amount of folks with GTX 400-600 cards who were looking to upgrade anyway and saw that the 970 was a great value card. If anything, it would hurt the 960, which is shit for anyone who isn't playing MOBAs, last gen console ports, and indie games.

Didn't they say 900 series cards have full dx12 support? So it was just a bunch of bs then

that is the key word. I would ahve to go read their press releases. "fully supporting dx12" vs "supporting full dx12" is unfortunately subject to horrible duplicitous marketspeak.

Why? I was fully aware that DX12 was standing right around the corner when I bought my GTX 980.

I never expect full compatibility for hardware that's older than a standard.

There will be a game released in 2025 that will be not compatible with any GPU on market today, yet those scummy GPU manufacturers keep selling them. What a bunch of bastards.

I'm not expecting my own GPU to be compatible with anything DX12 related, still, would love know.

Not sure why such a sarcastic post was needed, do you?

What? Get out of here with that reasonable shit. Why aren't you outraged that nVidia engineers can't see into the future, while also pretending it would have changed your purchasing decision if nVidia hadn't lied to your face?

'Compatible' and 'fully supports' have always had this kind of distinction, I'm not sure why this is suddenly noteworthy.

If you asked them that question, chances are that you would get a straight answer.
