The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

Let me just say this:

The game is short, but fucking excellent. I'm fully confident that the Order: 1886 is the UC1 of this generation, a damn good game, where the sequel will likely top it without question.

I completed it in about 6 hours.

However, my only gripe is that the story, while good, still feels like it should've been an HBO series rather than a video game. Though, I guess that's a backhanded compliment from a certain point of view.

Either way. Had a blast.

Buy it.

Enjoy it.

Form your own opinion.

I'm sure it's possible I could get 10 to 12 hours out of it if I did it on hard. The question is, does it have replay value to go back through it again? I did with all of the Uncharted games.

What do you mean? Because I've a strange feeling about the story too but I don't know if it's a good thing or not. I haven't finished the game yet but let's put it this way: I feel like the story is 100, told slowly 1 by 1, but the lore is 1000 and you barely see the surface of it. Hopefully you get what I mean.
Or maybe everything is a lot more simple and I'm just so blinded by the charm of this world that I wish there was more?

Hopefully more journalists judge it for how well it does what it intended, not what it isn't, or what they would have preferred it to be. Eg more open world in design, non cinematic etc. But I doubt it lol.

Not going to happen. The more I play it, the more I understand what RAD wanted to deliver and so far they did a good job, not free from flaws of course. But I've always supported devs' ideas and with The Order it has been the same since the very first news about the aspect ratio, I was there to defend it. On the other hand, journalism has never shown much.. tolerance or should I say openness? Anyway, I'm glad they stuck with their vision. If this was a regular TPS, it would probably be "just another TPS" with awesome gunplay, ok, but "just another". In its own way The Order tries to be different, I think.

The Order 1886 |OT| Come for the gameplay, watch on the youtubes.

All jokes aside, the title OT should really be something more normal cause it might only boast more shit posting.

That would make you very happy wouldn't it?

It doesn't matter what reviewers say. At least Sony dares to put out different games from different genres and new ips.

I'm all over this game and haters can giggle all they want about random youtube playthrough lengths and meta critic scores but I'll be enjoying it.
Uhhhh, aside from the setting the game isn't exactly some new unique new experimental IP, whenever a post like yous comes up it always either says:
- "Well at least they're trying something different."

The others say

-"Not every new IP has to invent the wheel." Well which is it? An IP trying something different or an iP that's not doing anything new but polishing tried and true mechanics?

Didn't realise that a game with basic third person shooting, QTE bosses and average story was that different

If that's the measure how many new AAA games are there that do anything new?

I like your effort though. I'm sure a certain other company is brimming with new homegrown ips that have completely original ideas, right?

Sony has absolutely been willing to invest in novel and/or interesting gameplay mechanics, but the Order simply isn't an example of that.

I picked up my copy today before going to work
(THANKS WALMART EMPLOYEE)

only got to play about a hour. Honestly regardless of whatever the length is, just from this hour alone I have the following impressions (positive).

- gameplay is solid
- QTEs are integrated nicely imo
- solid story

I am actually having fun with it. When I get more time i will love to get more immersed into it.

I didn't say this is some revolution in gameplay.

I have been playing games for years and tight "cinematic" experiences like this are increasingly rare. I'm implying it's different because there aren't many AAA games like this released nowadays yet Sony is giving me one.

I'm starting to think The Order is like a super polished Telltale Games release. With more gameplay thrown in the mix. I'm still going to pick it up on Friday. I need something to take me away from Destiny.

Insane For Sony

I feel like this game is a big risk for a team that's new to big budget projects like RaD. At least the same level of risk I think Heavy Rain was. Both very expensive games to make that if unsuccessful could sink a team of incredibly talented people. And they are both risky in that they don't follow the established money making formula. It's more obvious with HR I admit, but for this game as well, there's just no prior proof that people will bite into a full priced game that's so heavy on cinematic approach, in a setting that's pretty uncommon in any popular media.

it's reinventing the wheel in that it doesnt even try to do something different.

Awesome. Will be good to get your impressions once you're done with it. And yea I'm also glad they stuck to their guns and original creative vision. There's enough scope and enough gamers in this industry, that games covering a multitude of different genre's and game design approaches, ought be able to flourish. From the cinematic, old school, linear, right through to open world and everything in-between.

I didn't mean different as in new gameplay mechanics or anything. I mean different in that this kind of experience in today's "must be open world or have tacked on multiplayer to be worth more than a 7" world in a AAA game is not common these days and i, for one, appreciate it.

Is RAD considered a new team? I've followed their work since the PSP era.

That's quite the generalization of the gaming landscape. It sounds like there's a lot of games out there that you would enjoy, but just overlooked.

Alienous title is hilarious, but good Lord we don't need the title fucking up the conversation from the get go. It's going to be hard enough to wade through the shit posts as it is without a troll title.

Except you don't have to be either of those for good review scores, Bayonetta 2 is an example of that. The majority of games aren't open world.

Da fuck. Why would it make me happy.

Honestly- this is a topic for another day- but I find the whole review score anticipation/review scores period pointless.

And I want the game to be great- I'll likely buy it. Look at my PSN profile, I already buy way too much shit.

Maybe you're looking at the wrong things. When it comes to mere gameplay, The Order does what has been done already: big guys with awesome guns with great feedback, covers, QTE/melee etc, we should all agree on this. What's different, in my opinion, is the presentation and how everything flows from start to end and how well everything is mixed together for a short but intense experience.
Tomorrow I'll finish it and I'll share my final impression with a better idea of the overall.

So even major retailers don't even care about street dates anymore.

I wouldn't say that. Most of them didnt pay attention to it releasing friday. When I went to walmart to get mine, they had them out already and was selling. They are use to them selling on tuesday.

my guess.

i wouldn't, it's pretty tough on Normal already and there's no incentive to play it on Hard. Game is pretty basic coverbased shooter with zero innovations so there is not much to replay in any case unfortunately :/ Playing it on Hard would just mean more restarts. I finished it around 6 hours too and died several times during the few more frustrating fights with millions of waves of bad guys you have to shoot.

You can pretty much grab a Platinum trophy on one go too.

But atleast the game loads in 5 seconds flat so if you want to replay or show a specific chapter to a buddy thats easy :D

So it's not worth playing more than one run through? It's one run and then done? Like... the gameplay, story and characters don't hold it up enough for someone to play through on a harder difficulty?

i would say no. The coverbased shooting is done better in other games with more variety, story is a block that feels like the middle entry with a lot of loose ends after the credits roll and what has happened before this. And the characters aren't really likeable :/

A few levels are really great looking visually though so you might want to replay those chapters for fun or see if you can kill everyone with melee hits only etc..

The Order: 1886 |OT| Ready at Dawn. Done by Mid-day.

Does anyone have any idea what the real title'll be?

If there is any justice on the internet, yours should be the title. That, my friend is funny shit. Top effort.
As much as I hate all the commentary on value v length and just the all-round bullshit surrounding this title, we gotta see the lighter side of things and make this the title.

Guys the OT title while funny, shouldn't be anything joking about the length or stuff like that. Making OT titles like that just makes the thread turn to shit and hampers discussion.

A big-budget game that a grown man with a lot of demands on his time can finish in a weekend. What a fucking concept. Looking forward to this one.

My preorder copy just came in the mail.

I haven't followed a single thing since announcement trailer.

Anything I should know before diving in?
